bpev··on Ask HN: Songwriters, what software do you use?
Wrote a giant blog series with the entire process of my last album: https://bpev.me/notes/vx1

I think each song develops differently, so process varies depending. But tldr on software is:

Step 1. Whatever is easiest to write immediately on inspiration (which happens anytime anywhere): Voice Memos, Phone Notes app, Text Editor. I have a super long voice memo history, so my songs usually develop from 2-3+ voice memo ideas that may have been recorded years apart. I'll scroll through old ideas while songwriting to see if other cool ideas fit.

Step 2. Formalize using a combination of apps that depend on what I need to be specific about. Vibes? My DAW (Ableton or Reaper). Score? Musescore. Lyrics? Text editor + maybe recording a loop in my DAW.

Step 3. Usally by the end, I have a score .xml, lyrics .txt, and ableton live exports + stems.

bpev··on Thank You, Airbnb
There was one time that I found bed bugs on arrival and took a picture (thank goodness I was able to escape without carrying any); they gave me a full refund + some extra inconvenience money (in cash, not airbnbucks). Probably would have been much more complicated if I had stayed a night or if I hadn't been able to get a picture / easy proof. But it was nice to have Airbnb as a 3rd party in that instance.
bpev··on LineageOS 22 Released
Many times the web browser works, but there are some cases where it doesn't or is just a much worse experience. Or even some apple-specific stuff, like my mom enjoys calling me via facetime.

Having the second device just opens up more chances that you have something that works.

bpev··on LineageOS 22 Released
Yupyup I basically keep around an iPad mini for this purpose
bpev··on Rite Aid's 'Zombie' stores take over America
I never really ever went to Rite Aid except for, as a kid, we went to go there to get Thrifty Brand Ice Cream. It's actually pretty decent, and they'd always use a giant scoop.
bpev··on Ghostty 1.0
So i've basically been a terminal.app purist, but downloaded ghostty on a whim because of all the excitement...

I did not realize it would be THAT much faster. I guess I should have started using better terminals earlier

bpev··on Show HN: Caravan, a flexible, transport-based logging system for TypeScript apps
Oo this is cool! Looking at some of the transports you built already, it looks fairly simple to do, but I'd appreciate a little documentation on how to BYOTransport (or at least once you think the api for that is solid)!

Was just about to start adding a little more structure to my app's logging, so ill have to play with it then!

bpev··on Vimium – The Hacker's Browser
yeah the permissions and ecosystem are scary. I have a very small extension (1000-ish users), and even I get "monetization opportunity for your extension" emails maybe... every other week?

Sometimes I feel like the only reason it's not a platform-breaking problem is that most extension devs make enough money from their day job to not care about a quick buck.

bpev··on Ask HN: Hackable Personal Database?
I've actually been building something like this kinda on the side for the past year or so, and use it daily for notes + map bookmarks, and occasionally for workout logs + cookbook recipes. Basically a local sqlite db of notes that can define note content types and plug-ins for using different visual treatments.

Although it's not really ready to show people yet. But would be interested to hear some more about people's use-cases for this kind of thingy. Would also be willing to jump on a call or smthn sometime and share my experience if u email me.

bpev··on Jelly Star – The Smallest Android 13 Smartphone
Not op, but for me, those things have been finicky and randomly disconnect, and when they do, it's more of a problem because you're removing the whole audio device instead of just the output plug (so like the audio might pause instead of just having some static).

Also, because I use my headphones on other devices with audio jacks, I lose those adapters all the time. Don't really like having a tail on my phone all the time. Vastly prefer having aux on my phones/tablets.

bpev··on Show HN: I Made an Open Source Platform for Structuring Any Unstructured Data
I'm not sure that I understand what we're parsing to. Like on the website, I see supported types, but that looks like the parsable types, no? What kind of structured representation is outputted? And can we guide what that structure looks like?
bpev··on FUTO Keyboard
How is multilingual support? Because I feel like this is usually the thing that I find to be quite poor in smaller company keyboards, and I don't see anything on their landing page.

Edit: specifically for non-roman chars ala chinese or japanese is where I tend to see gaps

bpev··on Show HN: I made a CLI tool to create web extensions with no build configuration
fwiw, in my experience, Safari is a much bigger annoyance to release extensions on than all the other platforms, and has the more differences is release process. So I'd expect this browser to be supported last.
bpev··on A morning with the Rabbit R1: a fun, funky, unfinished AI gadget
One step closer to the app I always dreamed of:

"Can I eat this?"

Pic of random foliage > is this safe to eat

bpev··on Lezer: A parsing system for CodeMirror, inspired by Tree-sitter
I jusy used this recently for making Traindown syntax highlighting! It was pretty intuitive, even though I haven't done this kind of thing before!

https://github.com/inro-digital/lang-traindown

https://traindown.com/

I did notice that it seems (rightfully) very focused on the exact usecase of syntax highlighting. Do people also use this kind of system for quickly building ways to parse data from arbitrary text syntaxes?
