boyter··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
Have been working on a project which allows you to check if any of your source code has been copied from major online projects (over 70 billion lines of code) and report back if duplicates have been found. You can control the length of the run (so 15 lines means a match or 7 lines) and make the line matching fuzzy.

The idea being to provide compliance checks such as licensing and such, although I guess it would allow for checking for potential source code leaks as well and as a plagiarism detector.

It works by running a program over your source code which produces line by line hashes, with the result uploaded and then scanned over. The result is a report indicating what percentage of code was identified as copied both on a project and on an individual file level, with the identified source and its location. As such if nothing is leaked there is no ability to reconstruct the source code as it is a hash.

It works over 200+ languages, and while working over line by line currently can be expanded out to work in different ways.

Looking for interested parties to try it out (see my bio for contact) in addition to the current ones I have. Even if its just you wanting to kick the tires.

boyter··on Ask HN: Expected to finish every story for the sprint?
No. It’s an estimate of effort not time. The estimate could be wrong, other things could have been moved in, sick leave etc…
boyter··on Delta passengers fall ill while stuck for hours during blistering Vegas heatwave
My understanding from someone who knows about this (please forgive my lack of knowledge as I am attempting to relay what they told me) was that they used to step down when going to land at fixed points to avoid turbulence and hold those levels.

The levels were picked to provide the customers a comfortable ride, based on reports from other planes and whatever other sources they have.

They have since been told to save on fuel and so don't do this, not "gliding" but lowering the thrust to save fuel when descending which exposes people to the rougher air for longer periods of time.

Please correct my understanding if this is not the case.

boyter··on Delta passengers fall ill while stuck for hours during blistering Vegas heatwave
Saving fuel seems highly likely to me.

My understanding is that's the cause of the additional turbulence you see these days, since they glide into land rather than stepping down to avoid turbulence. I think they also have planes more tightly packed now subjecting you to more wind vortex from the other planes.

You aren’t missing anything. I don’t have the paper handy but I had the same question and found a study showing that a salt worked fine.

I’m just glad im not the only one to wonder this. Perhaps that’s the issue. It feels wrong for some reason despite not being an issue in practice.

boyter··on Blocking Threads won't be enough to protect privacy once they join the Fediverse
Let me rephrase. I don’t think the current iteration of Mastodon can scale well enough no matter what hardware you throw at it. It’s not designed for it. You would need to build a new system to achieve what was proposed.

I suspect that the above along with the cost is why it hasn’t happened. Although you do miss a lot of what’s going on by not being on one of the larger instances.

boyter··on Blocking Threads won't be enough to protect privacy once they join the Fediverse
Which is what mastodon already does. It has extended the ActivityPub protocol in a few places. Everyone copies because you must work against Mastodon to really participate.
boyter··on Blocking Threads won't be enough to protect privacy once they join the Fediverse
Correct.

A lot of the protections in ActivityPub are listed in the spec as "should" not "must". For example edits and deletes.

I think it should be assumed that when you publish content over activitypub it is now public. Any exception that it is private is asinine since you are literally publishing it to other servers.

boyter··on Blocking Threads won't be enough to protect privacy once they join the Fediverse
I totally agree.

Using a protocol designed to distribute content with the expectation that you remain in control of it is asinine. If you really want to control it, either allow list federate with only instances you know are in the same circle (IE make your own smaller fediverse), or move to a private forum.

I argued with the Fediverse about this several months ago, and raised all of the same problems in the article with them. Only to be shouted at, doxed, abused, insulted and attacked. I still think that what I experienced would be enough to drive some people to self harm. The level of toxic interactions on the fedivese was the worst I have ever experienced on the internet.

As such I find the fact that there is a freakout over what has been predicted multiple times hilarious. I welcome Meta joining. The sooner people on the fedivese grow up and realize the reality of what is coming the better.

I really like ActivityPub. I really like the fedivese idea. However when you visit you rapidly discover its full of the really annoying people from twitter, and people with "ex tumblr poster" in their bios.

Forget where this came from but it sums it up perfectly.

Fediverse: We are open for federation and you to join!
Meta: Ok here is what we are doing with instagram.
Fediverse: Not that kind of open!
boyter··on Blocking Threads won't be enough to protect privacy once they join the Fediverse
For the moment it cannot be too centralized since Mastodon being the main software becomes prohibitively expensive to run.
boyter··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://boyter.org/

Its closer to a personal diary of the things I do technology wise, and where I put anything I have written together so I have a record of it.

boyter··on Sourcegraph is no longer open source
I'll add something I have been working on https://github.com/boyter/cs which is aimed at a smaller scale. It works fine for multiple repositories so long as they aren't too large.
boyter··on Can Dell’s 6K monitor beat their 8K monitor?
I get used to 60 pretty quickly, but I really notice it when I move back.
boyter··on Can Dell’s 6K monitor beat their 8K monitor?
I thought I was in 2... till I actually got a 120Hz screen. Since I flip between my desktop at 120Hz and Macbook Air M1 at 60Hz frequently I discovered I really notice.

Its always so much nicer when I leave the Air. Everything is so much smoother.

boyter··on A compressed indexable bitset
Unrelated to article but thanks for publicising the work on PEF. It’s one of those papers and codebases I scan though every now and then attempting to understand it better. I’ll get there one day and hopefully be able to reimplement it myself, for no real purpose other than understanding.
boyter··on Show HN: Codespelunker – A command line search tool with TUI and HTTP modes
Add in HTMX is something I am seriously considering to add in to get an instant search over the webui.
boyter··on Show HN: Codespelunker – A command line search tool with TUI and HTTP modes
I find it useful from time to time. As for users... I am the main user of this tool. Its mostly built around what I want.
boyter··on Show HN: Codespelunker – A command line search tool with TUI and HTTP modes
I tend to do it with backticks, so

    vi `cs`
would do the trick.

I used to love reading his columns in the pages of atomic mpc. A name that always makes me smile.
boyter··on Marginalia.nu API
I have been meaning to add a hashcash style calculation on searchcode for ages to make the bots a bit less painful.

I did add it to another search I run to stop spam and that was very effective.

boyter··on AMD’s 7950X3D: Zen 4 Gets VCache
Not really. Chips are mostly factory overclocked these days. They dump in all that power to get the coveted #1 spot in the review charts. Turn on eco mode and you get 99% of the performance at a much nicer power limit.

Just pretend it’s 2013 and you got a chip with some nice overclocking potential you don’t really want to use because you don’t like heat or the noise it brings.

boyter··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
The values come from the result of many hash functions.

I actually need them sorted as well hence they are added to an array, and deduplicated.

I had a look and didn’t see any obvious way to eliminate them hence the initial function, and the subsequent faster one.

boyter··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
I look forward to the beating I get when I update it to have accurate gitignore file processing and the post about doing that!
boyter··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
Added them in for you.
boyter··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
Not at all. I annoyed the fediverse a while back and that was what I would call harsh. Well that and some reddit comments.

I actually appreciate comments like yours. I did indeed make a mistake. Just as mentioned never intended this post to end up here. Hence the spelling errors and problems like this.

boyter··on Deduplicate a slice in Go, use sort or a map?
That’s what I get for turning throwaway slack posts into blog posts without looking over it. Didn’t expect it to end up being read. It was more “I wrote this on slack I should save a copy”. Indeed should be struct for lower overhead. I’ll fix it tomorrow once my ego recovers from the inevitable comments that suggest I should give up programming and never write any technical post again.
boyter··on Blue Sky: Can Twitter be owned by its users?
I'm not sure how they actually go about doing that though. Unless of course you enter your key and decrypt client side, which I suspect the majority of users won't like.

There is nothing stopping this from being implemented in ActivityPub too, and in fact there are already pub/pri keys there to do this. However you still need to trust that the instance you are on and the one your are communicating with play by the rules.

boyter··on Why I Blog
While some of the things mentioned are why I also blog, the main reason I do so is so I can remember what I was thinking. I write my blog for me first. If someone else finds it useful that’s great. I guess you could stick that under clarify my thinking, although I tend to keep notes as I go and then reformed into a condensed post afterwards.

I tend to go back a re-read some posts years after I published them. It’s especially helpful when working on open source projects, as I tend to include warts and all so I can remember what not to do and why.

I have often wondered about the answer to that. Especially when people start raising the idea of returning things to the historical owners.
