bowyakka··on Tessel: The end of web development as we know it
I agree with you but I am thinking that your point on bolting training wheels might be more valid than sarcastic.

See getting into full EE is a serious amount of work (I get it, whilst I work on ML stuffs I have spent time in the embedded space; and the web crowd could learn a lot from the embedded folks). I do however wonder how many people would be willing to undertake the effort if they had a toy to hook their interest at the start.

Me, I will happily stay with my FPGA's and verilog, but then I grew up on computers that were meant to be messed with (e.g. the spectrum), in an era where my parents encouraged me to take apart, _understand_ and mend electronics.

Today it feels like this is no longer the case and that bugs me.

Maybe as a toy this fulfills that niche ?

bowyakka··on Murder, love and life after 32 years in prison
The uk defines the age of criminal responsibility as 10; which is the point at which the individuals actions can be viewed as theirs and theirs alone in the eyes of the law.

FWIW the US scale for this slides between 6 and 12 according to wikipedia

bowyakka··on Valve Confirms They are Working on a Steam Box
This one was obvious at least 1 year ago if not more

Its a literary of little things that kept adding up for valve to make a move in this direction.

The big ones for me have been the fact that valve has been hiring hardware, dsp, fpga, linux developers, kernel hackers, control chain specialists and such forth for the last 2-3 years.

I remember saying a long time back that valve are either going to push onto some android hybrid thing, or that there were making a console.

I think the Linux thing was valve reacting to windows 8 that forced them to show their hand a little.

Your macro argument is a terrible one, you can do exactly the same thing with any sane language (and indeed I have done, getting python to create boilerplate java)

You dont need macros for this (which your post shows since I cant see any defmacro used there)

This!

I cant agree with this more, unless you approach me with an experiment that would put most science to shame I do not value your use of Jmeter/Tsung/Siege/Rando-Python-Script. If you test plan does not have pauses in it, and you are not engineering a nuclear reactor I probably wont even start the conversation.

.... At $DAYJOB, when we were putting together a new search engine we spent some time upfront putting in a lot of tooling to worry about and test performance every step of the way. Some of this tooling was built around jmeter and focused on generating realistic test plans (which we could derive from the already operational existing search engine). It was a neat infrastructure it tracked everything by commit, captured all manner of metrics and used huge datasets, mined from the logs, built out with markov models. Everything we reported into an install of the software that runs http://speed.pypy.org, we thought we had it conquered.

Yet it was so flawed! Data would get stale, models would break, caches invalidated datasets and much much more.

It was funny at the same time I wrote a tool that we now know as darklaunch, this tool is stupid simple, it captures incoming traffic to the production system with pcap, and then (after a little mussing with it) sends it through to a always on test cluster. Yet its this tool that produces all the load, has all the weird user behavior, never gets out of sync and can run load, soak, endurance and impact tests.

Guess which one we use to test out new software, or new features, or to tune a garbage collector in as close to production as possible ?

I have not started Jmeter now in over a year, its been no great loss; sure we have microbenchmarks where they matter but for everything else you often hear the words "darklaunch it"

Now for sure we have the luxury of having real traffic to use and abuse, but if you don't have real traffic then realise you are using a scrying device anyhow and I will bet you good money your assumptions are wrong.

bowyakka··on How Long Will Programmers Be So Well-Paid?
No that will be gross values, the statement about ~77K being on the high end for the UK is right.

Easy experiment I went to jobserve.com a well known UK programmer job site and did a search for the word "programmer"

its breakdown of offered gross salaries is this

  Not stated on job 39
  Below £15K 1
  £15K-£20K 28
  £20K-£25K 79
  £25K-£30K 173
  £30K-£40K 286
  £40K-£50K 247
  £50K-£75K 166
  £75K-£100K 27
  Above £100K 11
Suggests a bell curve to me with the median being £35000
bowyakka··on How Long Will Programmers Be So Well-Paid?
I can attest to the going abroad thing, I made the move and have been astonished by the jump in salary and autonomy in the US over the UK.

What makes it weirder is I didn't change company only location

bowyakka··on Kid Automates Work, Is Fired, Hired Back, Automates Business
I still find that odd, perhaps I should quit my current job and do exactly what he does? after all automating data entry has to be a lot simpler than most programming jobs.

Lets play with the maths of this, lets say that he is generously making 40 euros, which is a lot for data entry (think like double what specialist data entry people are normally paid)

That leaves us with a bonus pool of 2100000, the claim is that he was taking 90% of the bonus, that would make the bonus pool 233333, lets round up to 250000

Ok so lets split this evenly across several employees

5 clerks = 50,000 bonus each on a base salary of 40,000 = 90,000 each !

10 clerks = 25,000 bonus each on a base salary of 40,000 = 65,000 each !

20 clerks = 12,500 bonus each on a base salary of 40,000 = 52,500 each !

Thats a stunning salary ! really, I would be motivated myself to get my bonus, even if I was only taking my _equal_ share of the magic pot.

Ok lets assume that his department is huge say ....

50 clerks = 5,000 bonus each on a base salary of 40,000 = 45,000 each

Sounds reasonable right? but the 50 clerks would be costing the company 2000000 Euros ! At that cost even the most stupid of organisations would be looking at automation (human via india or say the meat-cloud), or computers)

Now you might say that 40K is generous for the type of work, that he would really be earning something like 25K, still a lot for data entry which is a low skilled job that is typically hourly paid; a fine argument but if that is the case then the bonus pool becomes larger which still makes all the numbers look suspect.

Maybe he got a raise (and didn't really declare it, for some reason), even then that is somewhat higher than a basic internet search gives me for someone in Holland as a programmer (http://www.payscale.com/research/NL/Country=Netherlands/Sala...). Now the company he works for might be clueless, but I would be surprised if they did not do a wage equivalence as most companies are low that way.

So colour me extremely skeptical, the _only_ way it makes sense is if he misplaced a zero
