boto3··on Lyft Loses $600M in 2016 as Revenue Rises to $700M
There is still quite a bit of money in local service advertising. Uber/Lyft can start pushing ads on the riders.

boto3··on How Uber Plans to Conquer the Suburbs
Yeah, assume the city is 2 by 3 miles and the station is right at center, then one'd only need to walk at most ~1.7 miles to the train station. That's like half an hour walk before and after work. Do your cardio a favor and start walking and leave the parking space for less fortunate people who are not able to walk.

amen to that, older engineers would require higher salaries (due to the need to support family, to pay mortgage, etc.), and would not be able to put in the same number of hours. So if you can't demonstrate that you provide more values than the younger guns, why would an employer want to hire older engineers?
boto3··on Deep Neural Networks for YouTube Recommendations
Could you elaborate on "we learn high dimensional embeddings for each video in a fixed vocabulary and feed these embeddings into a feedforward neural network."

So, each video is mapped to fixed size vector of floats? A user's history is now a matrix of size [number of videos, embedding size]? What are the other parameters in this sentence "Importantly, the embeddings are learned jointly with all other model parameters through normal gradient descent back propagation updates."? And how do you concatenate all these into a "wide layer" when users would have histories of different length?

They do have established business lines and are profitable, so the valuation models are supposedly more accurate. The unicorn startup models would have much higher variance, so that leaves a lot of room for hand waving and personal branding to be factored in.
boto3··on The Google X moonshot factory is struggling to get products out the door
How? Google is not built on fundamental research like Xerox was. It's essentially a consumer company. Yes search and ad tech at scale is hard engineering, but it's the same as the physics of light.

machine learning, sorry.
boto3··on Introducing Instagram Stories
I've been to a couple of Instagram ML meetups. I am not surprised that this is what they came up with. There seemed to be a lot of technically gifted people there, but I always felt there was a lack of creativity and deep domain understanding. All the projects seemed to be in the line of: we added this feature, and we saw our user engagement increased by this percentage. Everyone seemed to be working on incremental improvements without a purposeful leadership and vision.

They do have the technical talents though. I think one of the word2vec authors was there, but he was giving a talk about using the same technique on emoji icons :-( I would think there are more interesting problems to tackle with the available resources at FB.

He's probably looking for an exit for Palantir. You know, making America safe again :)

boto3··on DarkForest: Deep learning engine for playing Go from Facebook research
Why don'd Facebook, Google and potentially MS, Apple, etc. set up a yearly tournament for the world title of 'Champion of Go'. This is similar to F1 races by the car manufacturers.

yeah, it'd be great if YC can provide some info on its internal working. I know that YC has multiple funds (one for each batch?), but not sure how partners contribute capitals/time?
boto3··on Theranos Executive to Depart Amid Regulatory Probes
Theranos general counsel Heather King told the Journal last year that Mr. Balwani’s instructions were consistent with the company’s “alternative assessment procedures,” which it said it adopted because it believes its unique technology has no peer group and could be thrown off by the preservatives used in proficiency-testing samples.

It's really Theranoax.

boto3··on Theranos Announces Expansion of Board of Directors, New Organizational Structure
Theranos is now under a criminal investigation by federal officers from the Department of Justice. This is not going to end well for Holmes.

boto3··on Jeremy Guillory's Counter-Complaint against Cruise Automation
This is gold:

In early October 2013, Guillory met with 28-year-old Vogt, a self-proclaimed MIT drop- out who had spent a month to earn a degree in installing Microsoft Windows.

boto3··on The Sign Up with Google Mistake You Can't Fix
This is insane. I have Google/FB test accounts that I use to try out new products. I am now inclined to set up offline mail to make sure that my emails are not readily available to anyone but me. Of course Google still archives my removed emails but I think their policy is to remove them after a certain period. Can someone at Google confirm?
