borissk··on Neolithic boats found in the Mediterranean reveal advanced nautical technology
People went to Australia and many remote islands in the oceans thousands of years ago. Probably had as good boats as the guys in the Mediterranean.
borissk··on Tell HN: ChatGPT has become untrustworthy
It's a work in progress and it still has to be done mostly by humans. Humans make mistakes.

Claude is in many ways superior to ChatGPT, reverse is also true.

borissk··on Apple removed Alexei Navalny's app after Kremlin demand
All the Apple store like stores of their partner in Russia are still open and selling the latest iPhones. Apple has removed many russian apps from their app store, but companies are publishing copies under different names.

Surely if the US was serious about the sanctions they could force Apple to brick all iPhones on Russian territory (together with all Windows laptops, PCs and servers, Cisco switches, commercial Linux distro servers, etc.).

borissk··on Deloitte accounts will do all audits next year using a LLM based on ChatGPT
Next year: Deloitte fires half of it's accountants.
borissk··on The system prompt for Claude explained by an insider
Surely there's a lot more going in through the system prompt. Stuff like don't help create weapons of mass destruction, do-it-yourself bombs, organize terrorist acts, etc.
borissk··on Scientists put Jared Diamond's continental axis hypothesis to the test
Even if the layout of the land didn't give an advantage to Eurasia + Mediterranean Africa, the sheer size did. It had a lot more arable land, more space for nomadic tribes (capable of fast travel and spread of culture and technology), more resources, more people. Brief study of geography and climate would make it obvious that areas like Mediterranean, Middle East, India and China will become centers of civilization. All these were connected by land and sea routes, that made it possible to exchange knowledge (and germs). Americas, Sub-Saharan Africa and Australia didn't stand a chance.
borissk··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Russia had democracy back in the late 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

E.g. the Russian Comunist party leader Zyuganov have said many times that he lost the 1996 president elections in a fair way.

borissk··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB Memory Appears on eBay for USD500
You think anti competitive strategies are only effective for 3 months?

Or scalpers stop their business after 3 months?

borissk··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB Memory Appears on eBay for USD500
Don't think nVidia is a company run for the quarterly profit report.
borissk··on Alexei Navalny has died
North Korea was ready...

Good thing Bulgaria is able to supply Ukraine with plenty of 152mm shells for their old soviet artillery.

borissk··on Microsoft 'retires' Azure IoT Central in platform rethink
What did they do then?
borissk··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB Memory Appears on eBay for USD500
The price of gaming GPUs have risen mainly because very few gamers buy AMD and Intel GPUs.
borissk··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB Memory Appears on eBay for USD500
People may start calling for monopoly abuse investigation in US and EU.
borissk··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB Memory Appears on eBay for USD500
If the card onboard memory is not enough, the card can use the PC RAM over the PCIe connection - and then the PCIe bandwidth is very important. But the main reason for less lanes is to cut costs.
borissk··on Why Charging Your Gadgets over 80% Is Such a Bad Idea
All recent Samsung devices (or at least the smartphones and laptops I've seen) have a setting to stop charging when the battery is 85% charged.

I think there are Android apps that can do the same on other brand phones. Wonder if anyone can recommend one.

borissk··on Sam Altman Wants $7T
GPT-7, a.k.a. SkyNet.
borissk··on 'Baby Bust': Why Fewer Young People Expect to Become Parents (2013)
In Muslim countries/societies there's usually a very strong pressure to have a lot of kids from the religious authorities.
borissk··on 'Baby Bust': Why Fewer Young People Expect to Become Parents (2013)
Interesting that Putin's regime follows similar philosophy - they recently started a big campaign against abortions, including forbidding abortions in private clinics.
borissk··on 'Baby Bust': Why Fewer Young People Expect to Become Parents (2013)
Paying people to have kids has some interesting side effects. Raising a kid in a big city costs a lot more than raising a kid out in the country. So if the government offers a fixed subsidy per kid the insensitive to have kids is a lot stronger in the country. People out in the country vote differently than people in a big city.
borissk··on IBM tells managers to come to the office or leave their jobs
Maybe this is a way to get rid of a lot of employees without explicitly firing them. Looks very likely that the recent advances in AI will drastically increase the productivity of developers, operations, BAs, etc. so companies like IBM will need a lot less employees to do the same amount of work.
borissk··on Why Tim Cook Is Going All in on the Apple Vision Pro
Very interesting. Wonder what a killer app for the Vision can be.

What does the interview process for Senior Full Stack Engineer (C#) look like?
borissk··on Obesity drugs have another superpower: taming inflammation
So far Ozempic looks like a miracle drug. Interesting if it will stay this way or down the line negative side effects will be discovered.
borissk··on Starlink's Laser System Is Beaming 42M GB of Data per Day
I think they plan to drastically increase the laser bandwidth. This is a new tech, that they just started using.
borissk··on Intel's Humbling
You're right - this is another problem for Intel. They have a reputation for underpaying engineers, so the best and the brightest go elsewhere.
borissk··on Intel's Humbling
And furthermore they lost most of their best engineers and scientists during the years that the company was run by the useless MBAs. Now each new technology process is a huge struggle. Intel has secured some of the first new gen EUV machines from ASML, but if they'll have the talent to quickly start using them on scale is not yet clear.
borissk··on Starlink's Laser System Is Beaming 42M GB of Data per Day
Say what you want about Musk, but his companies really deliver some amazing tech at scale.

With the laser links operational, Starlink antennas will probably soon be installed on practically all commercial airplanes and ships.

borissk··on PayPal lays off 2,500 workers one week after CEO announces 'new chapter'
Looks like all the tech companies will use the current lay off wave to get rid of employees management perceives as under performing. I guess by next January they will be back hiring full swing.

Who is this "we"? The flatearters?
borissk··on Hopes for Finding Mars Life After Rover's Ground-Penetrating Radar Discovery
