borgel··on Build yourself a weather station
Do the new models still make it easy to reflash? I thought I saw something about them being somehow locked down.
borgel··on Manned fighter to face autonomous drone next year
I believe that was Surface Detail. Having trouble coming up with the exact quote at the moment. I think it was Demeisen of the Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints explaining to Lededje.
borgel··on Automatic (Car Adapter) Shutting Down
Ahh, interesting. I can see how that combination of features would be easier to fit in an ASIC than as discreet components in the tiny dongle. Pretty cool hardware combination!

Can you comment on what the safety/security/reliability blocks were?

borgel··on Automatic (Car Adapter) Shutting Down
Wow, an ASIC is a big step! I'm impressed you needed to hit that level of (cost down, I assume?). Or was it to get better HW security, perhaps to use it for billing?

Anyway, I had an original Bluetooth Automatic until I upgraded to a Pro when it was launched. I love them! Sorry to hear this is the end.

borgel··on Carrier sales of phone-location data is illegal, FCC plans punishment
Fair, though Tom Wheeler (previous chairman) was also a lobbyist and he turned out really well.
borgel··on Ask HN: Any Pebble Alternatives?
I was under the impression that they recently fixed the limited set of notifications problem, though I'm having trouble finding the source at the moment.
borgel··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
Or both! I'm always surprised more people don't think about this combo. Seems like a perfect fit with their strengths.
borgel··on New Mac Pro Tech Specs
Might happen in a thermal/vac chamber. Seems easier than non artificial options!
borgel··on Is the era of the $100 graphing calculator coming to an end?
Yes, this came up before as well. It was a fine distinction that I wasn't aware of.
borgel··on Is the era of the $100 graphing calculator coming to an end?
Approximately related, I find the NumWorks calculator [1] absolutely enthralling. It has a fairly beefy modern ARM Cortex M4 processor which runs an attractive GUI written in Python. And yes, you can write and run Python on the device. The hardware is very well described [2] in human terms and electrical schematics are available. Software is totally open source and the device can be easily reflashed. I'm not sure what I'd use it for, but I've had one on my birthday list for a while.

There's a web simulator [3] online if you want to play with the OS.

Depending on your goals, there's the GPD Micro PC [1]. Quite the odd duckling, but it includes an RJ-45 and an honest-to-god DB9 for RS232! Not nearly as fun as building it yourself though!

There's this thing [1]. @timonsku [2] tweets about it a fair amount, seems to be well on its way.

A similar build is arturo182's Handheld Feather Wing, which uses a Blackberry Q10 keyboard [2] Though it doesn't have a processor of its own it can be plugged into Feather compatible boards that do (like @groguard's Giant Board, which runs Linux [3]). Makes quite a nice package!

I ended up going the other way and building a (split) 60% keyboard with a screen and a Pi in the middle [1]. It's long enough that you can sling it over your shoulder on a guitar strap, so it somewhat fails the pocketability test.

borgel··on Launch HN: Memfault (YC W19) – Crashlytics for Firmware
Great, thanks!

(Before digging into the SDK to see if this exists), is there any chance you'd support some form of "custom transport"? In the system I'm working on the micro is only connected to the network via a single board computer through which I'd need to shim the Memfault connection.

borgel··on Launch HN: Memfault (YC W19) – Crashlytics for Firmware
Hi! I write firmware professionally and this looks pretty amazing. I've already signed up to play with the tool and submitted a demo request :)

That being said, the thing I'm most interested in here is how to integrate Memfault with my codebase, and that's the only thing I can't figure out! Your docs pages are quite pretty, but don't include the interesting bits! Clicking thought into the demo doesn't really help.

Any chance you'd consider publishing that to the site?

borgel··on Writing a game engine in pure C: The Graphic Initialization
Ha, I was just thinking about where to find some STL-style collections earlier today and was lamenting not knowing having a great lib in mind.

Thanks for the suggestion! Seems like a good place to start.

borgel··on Writing a game engine in pure C: The Graphic Initialization
I'm a (primarily) C developer who would love to use C++ this way. I have some C++ experience but not enough to know which elements I should include or exclude. Or even how to begin effectively deciding that.

Can you point to any resources I can use to learn?

borgel··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
I built a desktop a few months ago after 10 years of laptops. Wow, what a difference time makes! It's incredible what you can get on even a modest budget when speccing desktop components.
borgel··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
Another random datapoint. I have been using a Monoprice MP Select Mini V2 [1] for a couple years (similar price point) and am extremely pleased. After leveling the bed the first time I've done no maintenance and it seems to print when asked with no trouble. I typically use it not at all for a few months, then up to multiple times a day when working on something.

An ironic twist that the company that bought the Segway brand makes nearly every one of those scooters. I guess it sort of worked out after all?

borgel··on Ask HN: What is the best “dumb” phone?
Cool thanks! It's exciting to run into an inexpensive LTE modem that can come in an easy to use package to use for stuff like this.

If you get to a point where you've learned some interesting things and generated documentation/video/etc send me a note on Twitter (@ borgel). Might make a good Hackaday writeup!

borgel··on Ask HN: What is the best “dumb” phone?
Interesting part! Looks like Mini PCI-E is the common formfactor, but some come on a little USB dongle. Is that the version you're using?

Will it do voice/SMS? I haven't found any indicators either way.
