boredemployee··on 'Mini liver' will grow in person's own lymph node in bold new trial
Tangentially, I just found out in a routine test that I have a condition called "gilbert's syndrome" [0]. It's harmless tho. It came from my parents, it seems. My dad died of liver cancer, but I don't know if he was diagnosed with that syndrome and if they were related.

Not disagreeing with you, and I'm not a specialist, but it's funny that lot of papers seem to claim exactly the opposite.

boredemployee··on Do ten times as much (2023)
If you already in the path of _seriously_ learning something, there's nothing new here.

But also there's this interesting and imho the most important part of the article that I learned the hard way:

>> immersion is the best method of foreign language acquisition

If you really want to deeply learn X (language, music, instrument, martial arts), you need to immerse yourself. Learn the history, the culture, you name it.

boredemployee··on Ask HN: Great, concise resource to learn LLM technical fundamentals?
I'm in the same bot as you are learning with this activeloop course [1]. I think it has a good overview. The problem is that the code is a little bit outdated, which is good because you have to look outside instead of just copy and paste, so you actually know what's going on!

could someone point me a good and active irc server and (possibly) channels?

miss a lot the old days but the last time I tried every person seemed to be "idle"

boredemployee··on Show HN: Wife couldn't find a dev job so I built a tool to automate the search
think about the user experience:

1) they go to your website, you have links to social websites like linkedin.

2) user goes to your linkedin page and there's no single person associated with it.

conclusion: using "internet best practices" it sounds like a scam to me. so in a forum like HN i would expected you could open source it _or_ tell who you are, what data is being sent and collected, etc.

boredemployee··on Show HN: Wife couldn't find a dev job so I built a tool to automate the search
We basically don't know who the author is or what are they intentions, no available info anywhere.
boredemployee··on Ask HN: How's the current state of hiring in the LLM field?
Yes. I agree with everything you said, and "infrastructure/orchestration" in the LLM space, seems to be what some ppl are already calling as "LLMops".

Thanks for your input

boredemployee··on Ask HN: How's the current state of hiring in the LLM field?
>> Training and fine-tuning LLMs doesn't really have that much value.

I'm really not sure about that... seeing people talking about LLMops (as a role) and things like that. Well, let's see.

boredemployee··on Ask HN: How's the current state of hiring in the LLM field?
>> Should I in fact be keeping up with the latest RAG techniques (which seem to change every time a new foundational model gets released)? >> Should I just stay out of the whole thing and double down on classical ML applications in my domain?

Thank you. Both questions are what I'm wondering right now.

boredemployee··on Ask HN: Is anyone considering cancelling their ChatGPT subscription?
I used to love it, but it's getting on my nerves with all the politically correct BS.

I was trying to translate a little text and it refused because it cointaned a part that violated their terms. wth.

boredemployee··on Why time seems to pass faster as we age
sorry, in fact i think its hard to play any instrument, but my experience is with piano only. i studied hard for 18 months in my mid 30s and could play many pieces of Erik Satie and some other musicians.
boredemployee··on Why time seems to pass faster as we age
learning curve of the piano is crazy. and if you stop playing you go back to zero really really fast
boredemployee··on How ChatGPT made me lazy
That's really interesting.

You guys should write an article about it covering both perspectives.

Recently my ex-employer said he fired a junior dev because he was relying too much on paid ChatGPT, without understanding the concepts.

boredemployee··on Ask HN: 36 months of unemployment and depression. How to go back?
Believe in me, I've been in your shoes before, it seems like an endless problem! But the cure starts with the basics that we often neglect:

1) Go out for some exercise (45min of moderate walking)

2) Get some sunlight

3) Check your Vitamin D levels

4) Drink about 2 liters of water

5) Eat healthily

6) After all this, start thinking about your employability again

Never forget that when one opportunity closes, others open up. The following metaphor might seem like quackery, but "instead of focusing on a sick tree, look at the entire forest around it"

I really wonder whose fault is it. Unfortunately, what I see the most are many companies expecting you to be a jack of all trades (you should have GenAI/LLM skills, ML, Data Engineering, and what not)

boredemployee··on OKRs Are Bullshit

boredemployee··on Reducing BigQuery Costs
Did it happen to you? sorry to hear!
boredemployee··on Reducing BigQuery Costs
At the beginning of my career, I incurred some hundreds of dollars in losses with BigQuery and Google Cloud Function. The problem with these services is that they are easy and intuitive enough for a beginner to use, but a nightmare to maintain.
boredemployee··on You are what you love
Well. The paragraph below really comes at a good time,

>> Emotion cannot be separate from work. It has to be a part of it. When working, you’re expressing yourself. You express beliefs, opinions, and strategies, world views. You cannot detach yourself completely from work. I doubt that you ever should.

because 2 days ago I had a discussion with the owner of the company I work for (and, therefore, my boss), where I told him that we are going through a bizarre moment and that one of our colleagues was in pieces when talking to me.

He asked if that affected me, and I said that obviously it does, it's a person suffering, a person I like and who delivers a lot of value to the company.

He replied saying: "Well, it shouldn't, only our family should affect us in that aspect."

Then, finally, I understood what these people really think. They use us just to achieve their goals, the whole idea of team/squad is, in the end, a big fallacy.

boredemployee··on Remote work won, don't let anyone gaslight you to believe otherwise
yep. A few of us meet once a week in a shared office, and those who can't always attend are somehow ridiculed by one of the founders. I think this is idiotic, why hire people from hundreds of kilometers away then?
boredemployee··on Remote work % in industry not correlated with excess productivity growth
If we consider the very meaning of productivity, I wonder if we really shouldn't be producing less.

Increases in productivity have not necessarily led society to greater prosperity, so I think we've been looking at the wrong indicator all this time.

boredemployee··on A Philosophical Introduction to Language Models
Sorry if I'm straying from the topic, and I understand that we are technological beings and want to develop more and more.

But I keep thinking about how much we've lost control in all this. The fact that we need to spend rivers of money on energy and GPUs for LLMs, to automate our super boring daily tasks (which didn't even need to exist in the first place) says a lot about our dysfunctionality. I would trade all this paraphernalia we created for the freedom to have my small farm, grow my own food, and be happy with my family and friends, too bad that this is a very, very distant dream.
