bootsmann··on LLMs are steroids for your Dunning-Kruger
> Is anyone really cocksure on the basis of LLM received knowledge?

I work for a company with an open source product and the number of support requests we get from people who ask the chatbot to do their config and then end up with something nonfunctioning is quite significant. Goes up to users complaining our api is down because the chatbot hallucinated the endpoint.

bootsmann··on How the UK lost its shipbuilding industry
To be fair, the credibility of the Russian nuclear stack is questionable at this point. Its unclear how much capacity survived the past 30 years of graft. We have developed nations struggling to maintain theirs without layers of blatant corruption weaved into the process.
bootsmann··on You Don't Need Anubis
Not sure crowdsec is fit for this purpose. Its more a fail2ban replacement than a ddos challenge.
bootsmann··on Why Nigeria accepted GMOs
The whole point of the G in GMO is that you don’t get these plants by the usual technique of selecting good strains produced by natural gene variance.
bootsmann··on Why Nigeria accepted GMOs
This is true in the abstract but I don’t see how it applies to this specific case. There are two agents here and the GMO plants will only be planted if planting them is the optimal choice for both.
bootsmann··on Why Nigeria accepted GMOs
If a factory pours poison into a farmers water source they can already sue, I cannot imagine it would be significantly harder to enable similar regulation for fertilizers and pesticides.
bootsmann··on Why Nigeria accepted GMOs
This is a tragedy of the commons and not comparable to a singular farmer making a singular decision about what to plant on his field.
bootsmann··on Why Nigeria accepted GMOs
Valid points but this seems more simple to address using regulation rather than removing the seed patents (which are essential to some degree to make this whole process worthwhile for manufacturers). The argument is that without seed patents most of the genuine advancements would not be worth pursuing.
bootsmann··on MCP-Scanner – Scan MCP Servers for vulnerabilities
“Ok, how do we do customer auth” has become my go-to question to kill MCP projects. There is no working solution which makes any kind of enterprise exploration into the space pointless.
bootsmann··on Why Nigeria accepted GMOs
I feel like this kind of discussion hinges on a misguided belief that farmers are not very smart businessmen. The idea that a farmer would abandon their current crop for GMO crop that they cannot replant without making a cost-benefit analysis in their head just strikes me as very odd. These peoples life depend on making such decisions, we should trust them to make them themselves.
bootsmann··on What if tariffs?
I think we agree?! I’m arguing that the tariff is being passed on to US prices and not distributed onto the worldwide customer base. A manufacturer that doesn't adjust their price structure is passing the price on because the tariff is applied by the government and not by the company selling the product.
bootsmann··on What if tariffs?
This was a big worry initially when the tariffs were announced but it doesn’t actually seem to be happening. Most manufacturers are not adjusting their price structure because the effects are super hard to estimate (don’t forget that the US is still just 20% of worldwide demand)

bootsmann··on Nvidia has produced the first Blackwell wafer on US soil
Most of the monopolies in the GPU supply chain (ASML, Zeiss etc.) are European companies. The “EU has no AI” narrative is mostly pushed by VCs so they can keep raising funds from European investors.
bootsmann··on OpenAI researcher announced GPT-5 math breakthrough that never happened
If I knew what’s in the paper I don’t need the summary but if I don’t know what’s in the paper I cannot possibly judge the accuracy of its summary.
bootsmann··on Why is everything so scalable?
> The problem is that this way it's hard to attract investors; they'll assume you are running on old or outdated tech. Everything should be serverless, agentic and, at least on paper, hyperscalable, because that sells further.

Investors don't give a shit about your stack

bootsmann··on German industrial output falls to 2005 levels as auto sector craters
> but after multiple warnings and casus belli about Ukraine not flirting with NATO

Putin invaded in 2014 after Ukraine deposed of their dictator over his failure to commit to EU alignment, the Nato stuff is a post-hoc excuse developed by the Russian government. This isn't about Nato it's about Putin being afraid of having working democracies next door.

bootsmann··on German industrial output falls to 2005 levels as auto sector craters
It's the American duopoly in these peoples head man. If you're a Republican everything bad is "Liberal" and if you're a Democrat everything bad is "Conservative". Always quite entertaining when it is used as a measuring stick for policies developed in a multi-party democracy which does not fall along the party lines as cleanly as it does in the US. The fact that Merkel voted against gay marriage always seems to break brains.

bootsmann··on Europe Can No Longer Ignore That It's Under Russian Attack
Erdogan did this 9 months after the incident, shortly after a military coup against him. Presumably this was about scoring an internal policy win.
bootsmann··on Europe Can No Longer Ignore That It's Under Russian Attack
> I think it's responsibility of the stronger party, here NATO, to seek deescalation.

NATO isn't fighting in Ukraine, Ukraine is fighting in Ukraine and Russia is the stronger party in that conflict.

bootsmann··on Europe Can No Longer Ignore That It's Under Russian Attack
> If Russia can provoke any NATO countries to attack first by, say, downing some airplane of theirs (fighter jets, recon, strategic bombers, etc.), they can use this as casus belli, and use it as propaganda.

This has already happened, Turkey shot down a Russian jet in 2015, the Russian state very quickly tucked its tail in after that. The VKS can't afford to lose these planes willy-nilly.

bootsmann··on Europe Can No Longer Ignore That It's Under Russian Attack
> Regarding the Malaysian airline, Westerners do this all the time

Western governments shoot down civilian airliners all the time?

(Also funny how the propaganda has shifted from “Actually the Ukrainians shot it down” to “Actually others do this too”)

bootsmann··on Swiss voters back e-ID legislation
It's not just government services (such credentials already exist but its a hodgepodge of self-rolled services for each agency). This ID will generally be equal to the real ID so it will be used to verify citizenship to employers, banks and even the store you order alcohol from. You can even use it to prove that you're of age to the barman irl.
bootsmann··on Swiss voters back e-ID legislation
I think it generally not wise to project the political conflicts and fault lines of one's own country on to other countries which exist in very different contexts.
