boondaburrah··on Signal can now be used without Google Play Services
While google play certainly helps with these issues, I currently have both whatsapp and firefox installed from their respective websites by downloading the APK directly. WhatsApp is happy to notify me when there's an update, and it's one click to download and install. Firefox downloads the update automatically, and again, it's one tap to start the install. Mozilla crash reporter runs when it needs to, etc.

So while google play gives you these features "for free," it's not impossible at all to have them without. Only unattended upgrades requires special access, and to be honest personally I never want things modifying what's installed without asking.

I've been tossing around a design for a "dumbphone" that only has "extensions" rather than apps. You can define feeds of information for it, such as bus schedules, email, and tweets, but that's it. If I can get my soldering up to snuff I may just try to build it.
boondaburrah··on All I Possess
I was looking for this. I read it over a decade ago in middle school immediately thought "is this Larry?"
boondaburrah··on 3D Comics
My favourite version of this is all of the cutscenes in the PS Vita game "Gravity Daze" (Gravity Rush). They're all drawn comics, but with the layers set at appropriate depths. The game uses the Vita's gyroscope to lock the 3d camera to the handheld's orientation. You really get the feel that you're looking /into/ a comic!
boondaburrah··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
Honestly, it's because the approval required to get an executable onto an employee's computer is absurd. If we can get chrome or firefox on the system image, then all we need to do is point them at a URL. Actually adding software to their computer requires all manner of support tickets and manager approval for them, so they won't do it.
boondaburrah··on Wine Running on Windows with the Windows Subsystem for Linux
The best part of Windows 7 is that it still has Windows Services for Unix. (WSU) Only Windows 8* lacks a posix layer from microsoft.
boondaburrah··on LibreOffice 5.3.0
I'm actually about to try out Calligra now that they've finally updated to Qt5. I live in Qt5 land (I'm convinced KDE 5 is the best desktop right now, features and design wise), mostly because Qt5 has been my favourite UI to program for. I hope it goes well.
boondaburrah··on Why I switched from OS X to Linux
You wouldn't happen to know where to get a decent NoMachine 3 replacement would you? I'm completely sold on the compressed/cached X forwarding that 3 offered, even if the server can only be an X11/*nix based machine. It was so fast it beat my school's on-LAN citrix server when I was remoting home through my house's DSL! I'm sad they abandoned it for more server compatibility in 4 and won't provide old 3 downloads that I could find...
boondaburrah··on Fedora 25: With Wayland, Linux has never been easier (or more handsome)
I've basically only noticed or cared about fonts when I'm on a windows computer or a poorly configured linux computer. Windows's hinting drives me nuts.
boondaburrah··on Pebble CEO explains why he sold to Fitbit
I'm hoping someone will make the AllJoyn protocol accessible for a weekend project. As it is right now I can't make heads or tails of what I need to onboard a simple LIFX bulb. It seems like I have to spin up a whole Java enterprise-ish project when all I want to do is send some packets to it's virtual access point with my wifi creds in them.

Do you know if there's any documentation on the low-level protocol that doesn't involve using the big SDK? I'd love to just write a python (or similar) script to do this grunt work.

boondaburrah··on Fighting Loneliness with Public Living Rooms
Biggest scam? That sounds like heaven to me. I, however, would willingly live in the middle of Tokyo. (Perhaps we can alleviate the problem by having a better rapid transit system?)
boondaburrah··on Bombardier to Cut 7,500 More Jobs Through 2018, Most in Rail
That explains why the MBTA's (90s) red line trains are built by them.
boondaburrah··on Raw footage of the Japanese games industry
I wish whatever anti-shake filter hadn't been applied (does youtube do this automatically now? I've noticed a scourge). Still, I'm totally bookmarking this to watch later when my limited Japanese comes back online. Thanks for posting it!

There wouldn't happen to be an original somewhere without the filter applied?

boondaburrah··on How to compile and install Lua 5.3.3 and C modules from sources on Windows
Windows developers might, but if I'm trying to create lua dependent software that runs on Windows for other people, I can't mandate that they install WSfL before they can run my program.
boondaburrah··on NIST declares the age of SMS-based 2-factor authentication over
I really think this is a terrible guideline. While I understand their concerns, there are plenty of people for which a VoIP number is their only number. Kinda just leaves them out in the cold there.
boondaburrah··on Millennials 'set to earn less than Generation X'
I live in taxachusetts and really enjoy not having to worry about healthcare and having an (albeit poorly) functioning public transit system with real subways. It... actually seems to work out guys.
boondaburrah··on The new TrueType interpreter in FreeType 2.7.0
No. No stop. I install MacType, which hacks windows's font rendering and replaces it with freetype, SPECIFICALLY so I can /avoid/ cleartype's ugly rendering on windows. I don't want it to invade my linux/mac as well!
boondaburrah··on Hammerspoon – Powerful automation of OS X with Lua
My question is, how does this compare with AppleScript? I've had macs for ages, and I used to automate things with AppleScript (I still do, but I used to, too). I imagine there are some things hammerspoon can do that AppleScript can't do and vice versa. Can the two compliment each other? Call each other?
boondaburrah··on Hammerspoon – Powerful automation of OS X with Lua
This change happened after he died IIRC, but yeah. I miss the old zoom button.
boondaburrah··on OnePlus 3
It's there, buried in the specs page. Finally a successor to the OnePlus One, IMO.
boondaburrah··on OnePlus 3
OnePlus One, which originally shipped with Cyanogen, has (had?) a pretty good ROM community. Since this seems to be trying to recapture what people liked about the One, I suspect there'll be ROMs for it soon enough. For right now now, I'd probably still go with the original One, or a Nexus.
boondaburrah··on $12M stolen from 1,400 convenience store ATMs across Japan in 2 hours
The international ones (every 7-11 atm) have to accept everything. My Japanese card doesn't even have a magstripe, only chip and pin, so the hometown banks aren't as stupid as this may make them seem.
boondaburrah··on Mononoki – A Font for Programming and Code Review
Cool, but what I really need to know is if two characters next to each other make a square, such that I can have CJK characters in the same line and not muck up the formatting.
boondaburrah··on Japanese Words That Don't Exist in English
The thing with "untranslatable" words is that their perfectly translatable, but the connotations surrounding them are completely different. What untranslatable then means in this context is that the listener of the translated version will /not/ understand the same meaning as someone listening to the non-translated version.

For instance, while the literal translation of shouganai is "it can't be helped," I'll translate it as "shit happens" in one situation, or "that's bureaucracy for you" (among other things) in another, depending on context. There simply isn't a reliable equivalent.

Also, imagine a scene (one that occurs every day at the end of my restaurant shift) where everyone is saying "otsukare" to each other. How should I translate that? Should I just have people yelling "TIRED" to the room? I'd have translated the word 'correctly' but not actually reflected the general feeling of "wow, we did it bro. Good job"

I'm currently learning Japanese. As I've learned these 'untranslatable words' of course I learned them through dictionaries and English explanations. As I saw them used and used them myself, though, they came to mean something different. I had to develop a new concept to compile them to, as it were. Now I find them difficult to translate back to English, and instead they have become new words in my vocabulary. It's why pigeon languages happen. (you should see the English spoken in the English-speaking office I worked at. It's stolen many Japanese words)

boondaburrah··on Modernizing AbiWord code
I loved AbiWord's file format. It was literally a basic html file, so I could confidently store anything in it and know I could read it later, much easier than any ODF.
boondaburrah··on Sample workflow for LP digitization
Back when I used audacity, I recall there being an RIAA preset in the EQ plugin designed for reversing the EQ on records. I never wound up using it though because LPs still require significant preamp before your average sound card can get a good recording, and any phono preamp I had of course had the RIAA circuitry in it already.
boondaburrah··on The Book of Shaders
I'm a huge fan of http://shdr.bkcore.com since it lets me try out shaders in the same context I'm probably going to use them (on models as materials) with good old Suzanne, the blender monkey head.
boondaburrah··on Opt Out From Online Behavioral Advertising By Participating Companies
I've never had an issue with amazon payments (mostly through humble bundle) and I always have third party cookies turned off.
boondaburrah··on Defold: 2D Game Engine by King.com
Interesting. There wasn't any way to turn it off when I last checked, but that was last year (during beta). Hopefully they'll allow you to get rid of it completely, but it still feels too much like my game would be tied up with King in some way, and I'd never want that.
boondaburrah··on Defold: 2D Game Engine by King.com
Sorry, I was going based off of what I remember from last year when I swore it off. Hopefully they'll allow you to disable it completely, but there was no way when I checked (again, last year).

The fact that it's even there rubs me the wrong way.
