bonesinger··on Tell HN: I spend so much time solving problems I feel like giving up
I was tasked with building a WPF project with no prior experience. I jumped on pluralsight for a lecture on wpf and mvvm, then started building the app. I realized I could use a framework for mvvm but I've learned a lot by doing everything from scratch. At one point I realized I needed some plugins for help (INotifyPropertyChanged, I'm looking at you) and started using them, which has made my life considerably easier. Build the project, use what tools are necessary. Don't let tools dictate your project. I've been down that hole a lot with JS. Gulp, Webpack, Grunt, Node, Express, Babel, ClojureScript, TypeScript, and it goes on and on and on.
bonesinger··on I gave my students iPads – then wished I could take them back
Agreed, my girlfriend's school implements iPad use and she has none of these problems. They have a single IT person in the school who setup all the iPads. My gf setup guided access on her 30 ipads to lock them down and the kids only use them for 1 or 2 lessons max. The majority of her teaching is down without iPad use. A lot of the author's issues seem to be a lack of awareness on technology, how to use iPads, and even proper classroom management.
bonesinger··on After 8 years and $128M raised, the clock is ticking for men's retailer Bonobos
I agree, I think its weird. I went into one of their stores and the employee was working with someone else. Since I can't buy anything, I just walked out.

I did end up buying their clothes on their website and the cost was pretty good after coupons. The clothes themselves are awesome and fit me perfectly.

I also like their website, especially the filter they have, it's very responsive.

bonesinger··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
It really is. I sold my 7 year old Zune a few months ago for $100 on ebay. Solidly built, fantastic device.
bonesinger··on John Carmack on Developing the Netflix App for Oculus
I always thought Halliday from Ready Player One was modeled after John Carmack. My hypothesis is getting closer to reality day by day. :)
bonesinger··on Speed matters: Why working quickly is more important than it seems
In that boat right now, but instead of 5 years in, 1.5 years in. I've been reading books on design patterns (we barely use them, you should get an idea of how bad it is here) and just in general trying to be better.
bonesinger··on How baseball’s tech team built HBO Now

Its not a perfect system, but some per-team pricing is nice.

bonesinger··on Oliver, a New Apartment-Finding App, Cuts Out the Middlemen
Yeah, actually I was looking in Jersey City and they were $1500, $4500 is insane to me. I'm from the NY tri-state area but I never bothered trying to live in NYC.
bonesinger··on Oliver, a New Apartment-Finding App, Cuts Out the Middlemen
I've moved 5 times in Chicago in the last 5 years, and each time I tried a broker but it was a miserable experience. I ended up finding a place on craigslist each time.

I'm looking to move to NYC soon and I all I see are $1500 broker fees the tenant has to pay. Its pretty insane.

bonesinger··on Ask HN: Can you suggest some good JavaScript projects to read and learn?
Ah yeah, we're having lots of issues with front end bugs causing crashes.
bonesinger··on Ask HN: Can you suggest some good JavaScript projects to read and learn?
We have a mid-size scale SPA and its suffering because of bloat. Functions are 2-500 lines long as an example. we've had critical bugs in the last 2 weeks and I got fed up and decided to start learning unit testing. Its been absolutely painful to get everything setup and started (Visual Studio). Nothing works. I would love to see a well written project to base my tests off of.

I would really love to see a well written SPA with testing, but I fear its almost reaching unicorn status. Most projects suffer from deadlines so they'll just never be written the way they should be and instead, the flow is now: patch it and move on.

bonesinger··on Hello World: Windows 10 Available on July 29
The bezel looks like a Dell XPS 13" but the unibody metal like frame looks like a Razer Blade 14"
bonesinger··on Ask HN: What are your hobbies, and why are they cool?
Just because you exercise doesn't mean you can eat what ever you want. I wish it worked that way.

bonesinger··on Why Tech Startups Should Look at Go
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1636455/where-is-erlang-u...
bonesinger··on Ask HN: Would you hire me?
As the above poster said, you should totally try picking up something like .NET, many financial companies use .NET, Java, or C++ for their trading systems.
bonesinger··on What's the Difference Between Icenium and PhoneGap Build?
Icenium now has integration with Sitefinity 6.0 (Telerik's cms)

You can now edit and manage your app through a cms.

bonesinger··on Algorithms, Data Structures, and Design Patterns for Self-Taught Developers
Sedgwick is teaching his Algorithms course on Coursera, which almost gives a "university course" type education on the subject.

Coincidentally, I've been taking Algorithms in school and I find that just watching Sedgwick's 10-30min lectures (vs. 3+ hours at school) is refreshing, clear, and concise.

I would also point out that the HW assignments I get in school are harder than the Coursera ones, but the way the material is taught to me is much more manageable by Sedgwick on Coursera.

bonesinger··on NY Major Bloomberg explains that "0" is an even number
Vanity plates that don't have numbers are considered odd-numbered plates.
bonesinger··on Overweight people are now a global problem
you are absolutely right. Eating healthy is more important than exercise and the two together will lead to an overall improvement in health.

Though its a small sample and an extreme one at that, the contestants' diets accounted for approximately 65% of their weight loss.

bonesinger··on A First for Udacity
When I took Udacity's online intro to computer science, I also took an into to computer science at a university in person. They do not compare. Udacity was far simpler and just touched the basics.

Unless they updated it to be more robust, Coursera's intro courses are more in depth and some go into theory as well.

bonesinger··on Saylor Foundation: Computer Science
Coursera just started their algorithms course, Its well organized and practical. They use Java.
bonesinger··on Ask HN: Are there any basic primers for Comp Sci?
I've recently enrolled in Coursera's SaaS class online. Its extremely intense compared to Udacity. I've got a few other books I want to read and some projects to start, I'm super excited!
bonesinger··on Ask HN: Are there any basic primers for Comp Sci?
I know now what to do, I've got a few books to read and some potential projects I should work on to give me that deeper understanding, thanks!
bonesinger··on Ask HN: Are there any basic primers for Comp Sci?
yes, I understand what you mean by ambiguous, another poster mentioned that I look at a CS syllabus and follow something of that nature. I believe that is what I was trying to say.
bonesinger··on Ask HN: Are there any basic primers for Comp Sci?
Thanks! I actually went through all the links in this thread and found quite a few books, specifically Head First Design Patterns + Head First Object Oriented Analysis & Design.

You succinctly described my plight, "knowing the syntax but not having a deep understanding" as well.

bonesinger··on Richard Posner: Why There Are Too Many Patents In America
Posner is a legal genius, I just finished law school and we probably read at least 30-50 of his opinions.

He truly understands the field of law and even more, he understands the ramifications that laws and regulations have and how they will affect us in the future. If there was any hope of changing Patent law, this is where its going to start, through Posner.

bonesinger··on Ask HN: How can I be competitive?
Go for it man! the RoR Tutorial builds a twitter clone. The process of making the clone is the learning period.

Once I'm done with going through RoR, I want to develop my own blog from scratch.

I'm also taking some Udacity classes and Coursera as well.

Lastly, get involved, do some volunteer work (e.g. design a site for a nonprofit, church, whatever..)

Those kids from Standford started programming at a young age, but they built up a nice portfolio, you should do the same.

bonesinger··on Ask HN: How can I be competitive?
I'm in the same boat as you, but the above advice is good advice. I'm looking for any job so that I can pay my bills while I take online classes and complete Ruby on Rails tutorial.

I also have 2-3 ideas that I want to develop that I can showcase. These projects are just vehicles to showcase my technical expertise. Then I'll apply for positions and use my portfolio I have made to showcase experience.

This is actively working towards your goal. If you can't find a job in the profession you want, you have to generate the opportunities yourself!

bonesinger··on Apple Sued Again in China, This Time Over Siri Patent Infringement

The entire bailout business is infuriating, coupled with no interest loans and now the LIBOR scandal, disruption needs to occur in the finance industry.

bonesinger··on Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Convertible Note Seed Financings
It depends if the note was subordinated or not. Generally you have debt that is ranked based on seniority, so if the convertible note was a secured debt, it will rank higher than the unsecured creditors; however, it may still rank below other secured debt.

Example Ranking: Secured Debt 1 Secured Debt 2 Unsecured Debt 1 Unsecured Debt 2

In the case of bankruptcy, SD1 is going to be able to make a claim and get first dibs on assets and things to recover its debt. Everyone else has to wait their turn. (This is a super simplified definition)

LLC and C Corp liability is generally designed to shield you from personal liability. There are few cases where the shield of liability is "pierced" to go after the person who ran the company. "Piercing the veil" is what it is called, and it doesn't happen often, but when it does its a big deal.

I've seen a few cases in school about it, mostly about CEOs just running amok and stealing money, while having duties of good faith, loyalty etc...
