bomb199··on Why Don’t the 20 Cities on Amazon's HQ2 Shortlist Collectively Bargain?
The wealthier are paying a lower percent of their wealth/income, it's just they make so much more than the masses it doesn't matter.

Should think of the marginal utility of their funds. If a $20,000 a year person pays $5,000 - it's much worse than a $10,000,000 paying $100,000.

Especially all the renters, which is almost the entire Millenial generation.

I'd like to think if our main form of transport was horses, we'd have solved this problem.

That's what libertarians want so desperately though. Because in their mind, they'll be the gilded elite in the boom-bust cycle. If it wasn't for the nasty government, all the hard-working brilliant libertarians would be billionaires.

bomb199··on Kodak shares up as it announces KODAKCoin cryptocurrency
I'm really upset Peakcoin isn't a coin meant to quickly transfer money out of failing coin markets.

What productive use? It would just go to another bet to try and make money.

The stock market is not about giving companies capital anymore, it's about concentrating funds to the back accounts of the right people.

bomb199··on Microsoft disables Windows Update when Meltdown/Spectre registry key isn't set
So if you edit the Kernel on your version of Ubuntu, then Canonical should be held responsible?

That seems like a crazy thought process. You're running software that modifies Window's internal functionality. The vendor knows it's unsupported. How can you blame the company who just made the platform you compromised?

Might as well set your root password to "password" and open it to the public then complain that the security is bad.

bomb199··on India’s IT industry laid off more than 56k employees this year
Reads to me like "We've significantly reduced the quality of life for our employees, but greatly increased profits!"

More part-time contractors who don't have steady work and fewer FTEs who are on constant call.

> trained in cybersecurity

I don't think I've ever met anyone in cybersecurity who was "trained in cybersecurity". At least not anyone useful. They're all developers first.

bomb199··on Bitcoin is an Energy Hog
I read it the same as you, except I hate that line of reasoning to hand-wave things away.

Let us assume a perfectly rational market... should preface all of these statements. That way it triggers us appropriately like "Assume an infinite plane" does.

bomb199··on From inboxing to thought showers: how business bullshit took over
If you want to get promoted, your managers need to approve of you. At the top, sometimes it's the CEO/Owner/Chairman needs to approve of you.

Easiest way is to speak their language. Unfortunately their language is often gibberish. So now all these people in middle management have learned to speak gibberish so they can make more money and get closer to the real money at the top.

bomb199··on Obama warns against irresponsible social media use
" to help overcome the biases of the establishment mainstream media "

Trump won BECAUSE of the biases of the establishment media. https://www.mediamatters.org/research/2016/11/04/study-top-n...

Can find tons of studies on this, it's an interesting topic.

"I find his statements somewhat hypocritical given that the media, and government, has had the monopoly on irresponsibility, bias, putting forth alternative realities, and the Balkanisation of society, until just recently now that people are able to combat it and freely spread information among tens of millions of people instantly and so easily, instead of only getting their information from approved sources without citizens being able to freely discuss, disprove, etc. - e.g., directly from the White House, and a couple of privileged mainstream media organizations that are very in-bed with the government."

Look no further than the President on what social media is doing for understanding issues. Somewhere around 90% of his tweets are straight-up lies that people take as truth because he's the President.

bomb199··on We Only Have Hours Left to Stop the NSA Expansion Bill
People aren't arguing against Conservative values though. They're arguing against the Republican party. How can you negotiate with a group of people that don't argue in good faith?

For example, the Democrats compromised on deficits. The Republicans insisted - deficits are important. Okay, we disagree. However, we'll respect some deficit rules to help keep it down. Okay.

Hey, Republicans have majority! First thing to do, massively increase deficits!

Let's now re-negotiate with that side?

bomb199··on Microsoft forced users to install a password manager with a critical flaw
I find this line of thinking pervasive among criticisms of all kinds of developers. Especially in video game forums!

"If they did it, then our game dev can too!" Like large programs are just some kind of widget you can just move from place to place.

bomb199··on Microsoft Adds an OpenSSH Client to Windows 10
Honestly, I think the biggest driver is the type of developers you find now. With Open-Source being such a large area for almost every CS student and budding developer - the normal work environment is becoming very Linux-heavy.

A natural result is now the Devs working at Microsoft ALSO wish they could use the command line for everything in Windows. Thus Powershell, and things like AZ CLI becoming much better.
