bolognafairy··on Show HN: Tach – Visualize and untangle your Python codebase
Since you’re being somewhat brigaded by the “everything local!” mob, I just wanna say that this all sounds completely reasonable to me. Some people hate being told that their demographic just isn’t currently being catered to exactly in the way that they want. I’m sure that these people working on things so utterly Top Secret can wait a while for your new little tool to support them. They’re just mad they can’t use it at Meta or whatever.
bolognafairy··on Jeff Bezos exerts more control of Washington Post opinion
Yeah. I’d bet the farm on the % of so-called ‘libertarians’ not wanting you to change your gender marker as being…quite high. Let alone crony capitalists.
bolognafairy··on In Defense of Text Labels
Often cited by people on this website as “designers dumbing down user interfaces” but I assure you that this is easily predominantly perpetrated by “i can do UX too, I know what’s best” developers.

I say this as a developer, and as someone that’s never identified or worked on paper as a ‘designer’.

I lead a team of developers, and we usually have no designer input unfortunately. It’s all us. My team OFTEN tries to “just use an icon” for something, and I almost always pull the back from this. It seldom works. It’s almost always confusing for people. Text all the way.

bolognafairy··on Meta claims torrenting pirated books isn't illegal without proof of seeding
And how does downloading a torrent differ from that?
bolognafairy··on DOGE employees don't understand the basics of SQL
That’s not what they were saying though. I don’t think anyone is taking the other side of that bet. Like, no shit?
bolognafairy··on South Korean regulator accuses DeepSeek of sharing user data with ByteDance
Alleging something is not complaining. It’s just…a statement. What do you want?
bolognafairy··on South Korean regulator accuses DeepSeek of sharing user data with ByteDance
No, but they let you leverage it.
bolognafairy··on South Korean regulator accuses DeepSeek of sharing user data with ByteDance
The ostensible business models of the companies at play.

Stop looking at any opportunity to bark as Sinophobia.

bolognafairy··on AWS paywalling select knowledge base articles, requiring Premium Support plan
I haven’t used it in a few years but I’ve had wholly good experiences.

Example: I had to parachute into an abandoned project running an ancient version of RDS Postgres. I was having a hard time working out the many steps required to actually get it to a modern version.

The agent went as far as to run through the process on their end, showing the version jumps they needed to do, config options they needed to change at each step, etc.

That was easily worth the money.

bolognafairy··on AWS paywalling select knowledge base articles, requiring Premium Support plan
How do you differentiate “blindly” suggesting AWS from someone non-blindly suggesting it?

Or is everyone that disagrees with you simply not seeing the Objective Truth of which you are aware and they are not?

Sheesh.

bolognafairy··on Plane crashes, overturns during landing at Toronto airport
Anyone that disregards explicit instruction by cabin crew, regarding safety, is an idiot, regardless.

I give zero shits if you think you’re going to lose your stuff. And you should give zero shits if I’m going to lose mine.

Don’t act like this is a class / means thing. It isn’t. This is just Americanism.

bolognafairy··on Plane crashes, overturns during landing at Toronto airport
What? Discord isn’t meant to be a media hot linking service. They’re literally doing it on purpose, to stop people from doing what this person is doing.

Christ.

bolognafairy··on We were wrong about GPUs
Lol. Yes. I scoffed.
bolognafairy··on Fake VS Code Extension on NPM Spreads Multi-Stage Malware
I’d be curious to hear what you think that PyPI et al are doing that NPM should be copying. It sounds like you’re pretty knowledgeable in this area, to be comfortable making comments like this with such confidence.
bolognafairy··on Fake VS Code Extension on NPM Spreads Multi-Stage Malware
That’s really all there is in the comment. They’re unambiguously conflating “number of dependencies are higher” with some sort of statement about the value system of people that work with a certain language. It’s silly language tribalism.
bolognafairy··on Fake VS Code Extension on NPM Spreads Multi-Stage Malware
This is an ironic statement, right? Because you’re mindlessly parroting a copy of a copy of what was once, probably, an intelligent and appropriately nuanced take? And because you’re attributing this to the “JS ecosystem” when supply chain attacks are common in many different ecosystems?

LLM-ass comment.

bolognafairy··on Starlink in the Falkland Islands – A national emergency situation?
This is how wealth redistribution works. This is how taxes work.
bolognafairy··on Writing a simple windows driver in Rust
I mean…kind of. It depends on what you install. Homebrew is quite good at keeping itself contained, when it’s in a position to do so.
bolognafairy··on Apple Invites
We can’t just start calling everything “slop” just because “AI slop” has become cool to say.
bolognafairy··on Apple Invites
Yeah, well, you need a computer to go on the internet! Where’s the freedom there!? /s
bolognafairy··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
> I am a 10x developer

lol, okay.

bolognafairy··on Bypass DeepSeek censorship by speaking in hex
Ern, in DeepSeek’s case, it’s not “news articles” that they’d be most concerned about.
bolognafairy··on Scientists find links between Alzheimer's, herpes, and head trauma
slayyyy
bolognafairy··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
Previous experience with aviation radio comms helps a lot. Typical radio comms essentially follow a template, and it’s done in a way where you can safely approximate a LOT (…just not numbers). But the…phraseology if you will, can be approximated quite easily with experience.

Funnily enough, American ATC / pilots are, I find, a lot more frequently ‘fast and loose’ compared to other areas, even English-speaking ones. Countless recordings online of EALD pilots being befuddled by some self-identified hotshot air traffic controller using overly casual / sloppy language, sometimes resulting in near misses or worse.

bolognafairy··on Commercial jet collides with Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan airport
I’ve watched this countless times and I’ll watch it countless times more.

One, two, three…Christ, 16 years here. This made me feel terrible. Thanks!
bolognafairy··on JavaScript Temporal is coming
> Those that still writes in vanilla JS are like those who still build apps in assembly langauge.

…Huh? Are you referring to transpilation?

bolognafairy··on Questions censored by DeepSeek
But don’t you get it? China Bad!

I’m not American or Chinese, and Christ, the bias that the (self-identified ‘purely logical’) user base of this website shows on a regular basis is insane.

Okay. But is it evil?
