bogzz··on Nvidia backs AI data center startup Nscale as it hits $14.6B valuation
The "average" in the YC microcosm, I assume.
bogzz··on India's top court angry after junior judge cites fake AI-generated orders
I imagine even a slight impediment in terms of being able to parse and express yourself in a language that you don't know as well as your mother tongue makes LLM usage much more tantalizing.

And not knowing the language quite as well as native speakers would also make you more likely to be discovered as having used an LLM to do coursework.

bogzz··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
Thanks for the edge case! Edited.
bogzz··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
I am so far removed from the type of person who might consider buying something like that. You'd have to be exceptionally impervious to social cues to even think of wearing that in public.

If you're blind, it's of course understandable but that's pretty much it in terms of cases in which I would consider the glasses acceptable to wear in public.

bogzz··on Thirty years on, Pokémon is still a monster hit
I donated mine with my GameBoys to Red Cross when I turned 19 :(

But I ordered the new Pocket Taco, which is like a controller that is taco-shaped and clamps around your smartphone, kinda turning it into a gameboy.

bogzz··on Thirty years on, Pokémon is still a monster hit
I'm pretty sure that was sarcasm.
bogzz··on Thirty years on, Pokémon is still a monster hit
I just bought a controller attachment for my smartphone so I can replay Crystal and Emerald! I haven't tried any of the 3D games yet, do they still hold some of the charm that the 2D games had?
bogzz··on How to talk to anyone and why you should
"EXCUSE ME, SIR! I see you are moving with great intention. Might your hurriedness be in connection with those papers you hold in your hand? Pray tell, for I much desire to converse! Aah, I see, I was right to assume you were in a hurry. Anyway, it must be wonderful to be working at a place as beautiful as this, is it not? Hah ha ha yees, isn't it wonderful. Well, alright then be on your way if you must."

Sorry but I couldn't help imagining you as the fake health inspector from Fawlty Towers while reading your comment.

I do agree with you though, talking is great, we are social animals even though modern life allows us to forget this, to our own detriment.

bogzz··on Cognitive Debt: When Velocity Exceeds Comprehension
The trade-off is worth it in my opinion when you are in a time crunch to deliver a demo, or are asked to test out an idea for a new feature (also in a time crunch).

The hope being that if the feature were to be kept or the demo fleshed out, developers would need to shape and refactor the project as per newly discovered requirements, or start from scratch having hopefully learnt from the agentic rush.

To me, it always boils down to LLMs being probabilistic models which can do more of the same that has been done thousands of times, but also exhibit emergent reasoning-like properties that allow them to combine patterns sometimes. It's not actual reasoning, it's a facsimile of reasoning. The bigger the models, the better the RLHF and fine-tuning, the more useful they become but my intuition is that they'll always (LLMs) asymptotically try to approach actual reasoning without being able to get there.

So the notion of no-human-brain-in-the-loop programming is to me, a fool's errand. I do obviously hope I am right here, but we'll see. Ultimately you need accountability and for accountability you need human understanding. Trying to move fast without waiting for comprehension to catch up (which would most likely result in alternate, better approaches to solving the problem at hand) increases entropy and pushes problems further down the road.

bogzz··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
We don't know how the military intended to use Claude, and neither do we know nor does the military know whether Claude without RLHF-imposed safety would have been more useful to them.

Ergo, this is a very convenient PR opportunity. The public assumes the worst, and this is egged on by Anthropic with the implication that CLAUDE is being used in autonomous weapons, which I find almost amusing.

He can now say goodbye to $200 million, and make up for it in positive publicity. Also, people will leave thinking that Claude is the best model, AND Anthropic are the heroes that staved off superintelligent killer robots for a while.

Even setting this aside, Dario is the silly guy who's "not sure whether Claude is sentient or not", who keeps using the UBI narrative to promote his product with the silent implication that LLMs actually ARE a path to AGI... Look, if you believe that, then that is where we differ, and I suppose that then the notion that Amodei is a moral man is comprehensible.

Oh, also the stealing. All the stealing. But he is not alone there by any means.

edit: to actually answer your question, this act in itself is not what prompted me to say that he is an immoral man. Your comment did.

bogzz··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
I am convinced that Amodei's "morality" is purely performative, and cynically employed as a marketing tactic. Time will tell, but most people will forget his lies.
bogzz··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
This is not how the word "moral" should be used in a sentence that also has the name Dario Amodei in it.
bogzz··on This time is different
ChatGPT 5.2 kept gaslighting me yesterday telling me that LLMs were explainable with Shapley values, and it kept referencing papers which talk about LLMs, and about SHAP, but talk about LLMs being used to explain the SHAP values of other ML models.

I encounter stuff like this every week, I don't know how you don't. I suppose a well-structured codebase in a statically typed language might not provide as much of a surface for hallucinations to present themselves? But like you say, logical problems of course still occur.

bogzz··on This time is different
LLMs are really a marvel, GPT 2 actually inspired me to go back to college (not directly, rather I needed to understand how it worked).

I have unlimited derision for morally spineless worms who disingenuously make it out to be more than it is-- looking at Dario, Sam, and the silly CEO of Control AI. Also, I hate to say it but Andrej Karpathy on twitter-- he's a worthless follow now. I can't blame, but am daily exasperated by media figures who can't help but go with what they hear prominent individuals in the field say.

If I were a junior now, and less confident, I would be abandoning my career in this climate.

LLMs are not going away. They will get a little better than they are now, and new model paradigms will come around at some point. But this tale of massive redundancy and skyrocketing unemployment is not going to come from LLMs.

This is the only reason why I cannot wait for a pop, and pray to God that it comes sooner than later. I just want to feel good about technology again. I want to tinker, to feel positivity, to know how sustainable the tools I'm using actually are.

I don't want to be reminded daily of the disgusting reality of unbridled capitalism.

bogzz··on Anthropic drops flagship safety pledge
Ah, well that makes sense. In that case, it's another tool in the toolbelt, not a plug-and-play drone brain, as some reporters amusingly make it out to be.
bogzz··on Anthropic drops flagship safety pledge
Does anyone have insight into, or an interesting source to read, on what exactly Anthropic/OpenAI are doing/can do for a military? Reporters are unsurprisingly fearmongering about Claude "being used in surveillance, autonomous robots, and target acquisition" but AFAIK all Anthropic does is work with LLMs.

Are people really attempting to have LLMs replace vision models in robots, and trying to agentically make a robot work with an LLM?? This seems really silly to me, but perhaps I am mistaken.

The only other thing I could think of is real-time translation during special ops with parabolic microphones and AR goggles...

bogzz··on First Website (1992)
It just blew my mind! I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at all, JS was written for manipulating the DOM but I was NOT expecting a cool terminal style with a typing/Matrix-style transition animation from some of the first webpages ever.

My brain even ascribed a CRT distortion effect to it, even though that's not actually happening.

edit: okay, no, I am an idiot. Those pages were made in 2013:

bogzz··on I asked Claude for 37,500 random names, and it can't stop saying Marcus
I used to always reflexively blurt out 67 when asked for a random number.

I'm a proto gen alpha. I 6-7'd before it was cool.

bogzz··on I'm helping my dog vibe code games
It seems to me a case of the blog post title inspiring the project, instead of the other way around. But I am particularly curmudgeonly today.
bogzz··on I'm helping my dog vibe code games
Funny is subjective, I should just have moved on and ignored this but I couldn't help myself, this is so irritating.

It's a prompt that makes an LLM turn iuqefxygn9urg0fh1 into a little Godot game. It's like a slot machine with no payoff, and the dog component is slapped on top of it and makes no difference whatsoever in the project.

bogzz··on I'm helping my dog vibe code games
How did this get to the top of the frontpage?
bogzz··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
He really is, on twitter at least. But his podcast with Dwarkesh was such a refreshing dose of reality, it's like he is a completely different person on social media. I understand that the hype carries him away I suppose.
bogzz··on I'm Sick of This AI Shit [video]
I went on a short camping trip with my 60+ year old neighbor a couple months ago. He loves country. He had his Spotify playing songs for him the entire trip, and about 20% of the songs were slop. I felt like I was riding with Jerry listening to Human Music (from Rick&Morty).
bogzz··on I'm Sick of This AI Shit [video]
It is utterly unbelievable to me that these platforms haven't done anything about generated content yet.

Hell, a music streaming company could make bank with simply a draconian, human-enforced ban on slop. (I understand it's not a simple problem, but there doesn't even seem to be an attempt at fixing it).

I was a Spotify user for 5 years and a Duolingo paid user for 3 years. When I got recommended slop in a random playlist twice, I unsubscribed and have no intention of ever returning. I cancelled my Duolingo subscription as soon as the imbecile CEO made a big stink about replacing workers with LLMs.

Fuck those companies, we shouldn't even give them a chance at rehabilitation.

bogzz··on Pocketbase lost its funding from FLOSS fund
...Guts? I genuinely don't know what field you're lobbing this from, but insinuating that referring to India as Bharat is for whatever reason a bad thing is asinine to me. This was a common name used in India even back in the pre-2009 days when I used to live there.

If you want to critique the anti-Muslim sentiment, democratic backsliding, or using nationalism as a veneer for corruption-- then I would have taken you seriously. AS it is though, even if it may not be rosy, on paper India is doing quite well.

bogzz··on 99% of adults over 40 have shoulder "abnormalities" on an MRI, study finds
Oh hey it's me, I'm the conformist. Stop picking on me.
bogzz··on OpenClaw is dangerous
Wow what an amazing analogy, you're absolutely right!
bogzz··on Pocketbase lost its funding from FLOSS fund
Such a shame. I so love Pocketbase, used it when I was trying out HTMX for a side project.

I get the sense that ganigeorgiev is feeling the thanklessness of open source work, and I so wish that he had an easier time of it.

That said, it's a shame that a FLOSS fund being based in India is reason enough for it to be avoided. Like, I understand that Indians might be overrepresented in the scam space right now, but avoiding funding because of it involving "sharing data with the Indian government" is very silly in my opinion. And insulting to India.

bogzz··on OpenAI has deleted the word 'safely' from its mission
