bogota··on Generics can make your Go code slower
We have been using golang for a long time without generic overhead. Why is now that it’s added we stop caring about performance. Is this the same HN that complains about memory bloat in every JavaScript thread?
bogota··on Sergey Brin: The Facebook phenomenon is a problem (2007)
If they had done this no one would be using WhatsApp today. Google has shown they don’t understand and can’t get chat right.
bogota··on I Am Well Versed in Active Shooter Training. What About First Aid?
Have you just not been watching the news for the last 15 years?
bogota··on Block a tweet, its author, and every single person who liked it
Im on iphone and use that all the time not that OS should matter. It doesn’t do anything. It will recommend the channel to me the next day half the time.
bogota··on Block a tweet, its author, and every single person who liked it
YouTube is the worst offender. I block and thumbs down the author… which of course means please recommend me every video they ever made. Youtube seems ripe for someone else to come and take a large part of the market if video storage wasn’t so expensive to enter into.
bogota··on What is money, anyway?
Who would buy bonds and with what if in this scenario we all didn’t believe in the green back?
bogota··on American poverty is too high for all kinds of people
It sucks. I have all but stopped talking about any issues. My opinions are no longer wanted or valued in society. Anything someone disagrees with instead of talking about it’s “you are privileged so of course your opinion is wrong”.
bogota··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Thank you. I feel terrible for a week every time they change the clock. I have a hard enough time getting on a good schedule without dealing with this stupid crap twice a year. This will greatly improve my life.
bogota··on Uber funds new lobbying group to deny rights for gig workers
Uber sells clicks. The others don’t.
bogota··on Why is there a TikTok tracking pixel on UberEats what is this crap?
Why is this title allowed?
bogota··on Reducing the risk of nuclear war should be a key concern of our generation
> there was a summer…

Yes. A summer. Not two years.

bogota··on Reducing the risk of nuclear war should be a key concern of our generation
Covid for 90% of the population was never something to have fear over. Something to be cautious about yes but the range of sheer panic among people under 40 in good health that i met was beyond silly.

I don’t trust the media anymore on anything. Every article they print that i have deep knowledge about or insider information on is so wrong as to be malicious.

Read the news to get an idea of what is going on but any opinion they present and most facts are pure bullshit.

bogota··on Secure messengers in war time
Matrix had a horrible UX last time i tried it out less than a year ago. I see this comment in ever thread that says use signal.

I host pretty much everything myself but I am not about trying to teach every person i want to talk with to not only download a new app but then walk them through how it works.

Signal is truly some awesome tech and I don’t understand the hate.

bogota··on Tinder’s pricing algorithm can charge users up to 5x more for same service
Reach out to any news organization than. They love selling uber is evil and this would be breaking news for them.

I don’t believe you because I hardly believe anything i read in comment sections. People are normally under informed or being malicious.

bogota··on Tinder’s pricing algorithm can charge users up to 5x more for same service
Because it’s likely not true or the full story.
bogota··on Americans Will Need to Register to Travel to Europe in 2023
Yeah I understand that. I was trying to put it nicely as talking about US immigration and border patrol policies make me very sad to be from the US.

It’s a complex issue but at the end of the day current policies end with people not being treated like humans.

My wife is from another country and the mental tax that going through the US immigration system has had on us took two years to recover from. The entire system is meant to be punitive and humiliating.

bogota··on Americans Will Need to Register to Travel to Europe in 2023
Its not guaranteed they will ask but yes they still do sometimes. Its just luck of the border agent draw.
bogota··on Nix: An idea whose time has come
This has been my experience as well. I have wanted so badly to love it and try and introduce it into many different systems to provide consistent tooling but its just too slow. I also found that many people had a hard time picking it up myself included.
bogota··on Apple chief Tim Cook faces shareholder revolt over $99M pay package
Is it?
bogota··on Can Slack-mania be cured with systemized discipline?
no. Slack sucks and I don't think companies realize just how much time and energy it wastes. I am lucky if I can get one day of focused programming in anymore. Most days I am exhausted from constant interrupts and when I finally do get time at the end of the day I am completely spent.

Everyone needs a personal guide through AWS/K8s/Infra Tool when about 50% of the time we have internal documentation answering the questions that are linked to at the top of the channel. Another 40% of questions could be figured out with light googling and 5 minutes of reading. The last 10% are legit questions around issues we have in our environment or require a deep knowledge of how the systems work together.

But hey. If companies want to pay me to babysit lazy developers I'll do it for a good price. I'm fairly close to leaving the company at this point but this seems to happen at every company I have been at once you get to a few hundred developers and my motivation has been completely sapped.

Slack is for leeches.

bogota··on Investors bought a record share of U.S. homes in 2021
How does a wealth tax help? I make 400k a year and can’t afford to buy anything. Even taking half of all the richest peoples wealth in the US does nothing to help. What would the government do? They spend that in a year. Wealth tax is a brain dead argument and I haven’t seen anyone explain how it would help the average person in anyway.
bogota··on How SoftBank’s costly bet on the ‘internet of things’ backfired at Arm
How do they scale demand for peak times with a fixed workforce? It seems trivially easy for say Uber to start hubs if they wanted to and they have a huge existing base.

But it comes down to execution and it will be interesting to see the space in another 5 years.

bogota··on How SoftBank’s costly bet on the ‘internet of things’ backfired at Arm
Really? You think gopuff is going to win that space? Why?
bogota··on An unscientific benchmark of SQLite vs. the file system (btrfs)
If you only care about storing data and not doing any complex operations or query against it why are you using something like sqlite as well?

It’s not a comparison as being in sqlite makes the ability to access this data significantly easier. This is comparing apples and dogs and i don’t see the merits.

bogota··on Why federated protocols don't work (2016)
I have yet to see a federated chat app my tech illiterate family can download and use. Sure I have set some up to test out but the UX is terrible on all of them. Matrix was the most polished but still horrible compared to signal.

Everyone loves to rag on signal here it seems. They would rather something be correct in ideals than help the largest amount of people. It’s a strange and holier than thou stance to take in my opinion.

bogota··on Booking.com is moving its customer service staff to an outsourcing company
How much are you really saving? I value my time much more than I do saving $20. Booking.com does provide a really nice UI for finding great places as well.
bogota··on You can change your number
I can assure you that most people do use phone contact lists for their intended purpose. I’m not sure what your comment is trying to get at other than being argumentative for whatever reason.
bogota··on Can medieval sleeping habits fix America’s insomnia?
For the people commenting who didn't read the article I read it for you.

tl;dr

probably not but some people find just knowing that people slept like that can help with anxiety around insomnia.

----

I have never really had issues with insomnia before but over the last year I have started to have it. It's like the author describes just snapping awake in the middle of the night. It's really unsettling looking at your phone and seeing you only got 3 or 4 hours of sleep and now you feel like you are ready for the day. I think it's stress related from COVID and the general new anxiety I find in pretty much doing anything. Having to worry about who is going to be mad if I wear a mask. Who is going to be mad if I don't.

I tried to go see the doctor when I had almost two weeks of only getting 14 hours of sleep for the entire week. Unfortunately they couldn't see me for 2 months. So i'm not even sure what my health insurance is paying for. Anyway i was able to sleep again after another week and have felt good with only the occasional insomnia now.

USA based if you couldn't tell. I greatly worry about the mental toll these last years have taken on people and I'm really not surprised that it seems like society is crumbling around us now.

bogota··on The Dangers of Dimethylmercury (2019)
No its not as you pointed out but didn’t clarify. Ethylmercury is not the same as methylmercury.
bogota··on The worldly turn: A return to economics that studies the real world
Can you explain how it’s a complete mess? I have been interested in economics for a long time and as such read many published articles but I have a hard time actually applying it to anything in the real world. Often the majority of economists are completely wrong just look at recent inflation predictions. You don’t have to look hard to find the field is consistently far off the mark.
