bogota··on Ignore the haters, and other lessons learned from creating JSON5
This is a great example of how argument by analogy completely breaks down and just helps the author express their feelings.

But for a second it makes them feel smart.

bogota··on Knowledge overconfidence is associated with anti-consensus views
That would be interesting i know how it has personally effected me and others. All i can gather is that over time the people blindly following mainstream consensus are isolating themselves together and getting more and more radical ideas.
bogota··on Ask HN: How to say no to a GitHub issue feature request?
If it’s something that would actually be helpful and you wouldn’t mind being added tell them you don’t have time but would gladly review the PR.

If it’s not a direction you want to take the project in explain why if you feel like it and let them know that they are free to fork and add support.

bogota··on Nix: Taming Unix with Functional Programming
I personally think that is a bit of a cop out. Most developers should be able to do basic tasks in a system that has been setup by an expert user.

I think bazel is an ok example of this. Its a pretty complex build system but expert users can build macros and rules that the average developer can consume without having to know a ton about everything that is happening.

IMO the ability to do the above at some level is the sign of well crafted software.

bogota··on Nix: Taming Unix with Functional Programming
I dont think anyone is being negative at least not the top level comments i read. I like nix but i gave it a test run at my company and no one could figure out how to make any change that wasn’t a copy and paste of what i had done.

The docs don’t help much unless you really go diving into them and most people who just want the software to run don’t want to spend the time learning it. I don’t blame them.

This is a very valid criticism of any software. Its why things like docker (containerization) win out even when it was technically around for years before. Someone made it easy to use so people used it.

bogota··on VCs squandered billions on scooter startups
I can guarantee you this is not the case
bogota··on VCs squandered billions on scooter startups
I don’t know i live downtown and it’s crazy how utilized the scooters are.
bogota··on Show HN: Parsnip – Duolingo for Cooking
100% agree about this not working unless it’s culture and country specific. It’s also not very interesting to me if i can’t go in and say i want to learn how to cook Venezuelan cuisine today.

Basic cooking skills are easy enough to find on youtube.

bogota··on The Impact of Posing with Cats on Female Perceptions of Male Dateability
True but i think the comment you are responding too is commenting that “this was not my experience” can’t be known without more information.

But to your point you only have so much time and it will likely help narrow down better long term partners if your profile is honest

bogota··on Airbnb will up its penalty for hosts who cancel last-minute from $100 to $1k
They should really make it more clear what places are owned by property management companies vs people.
bogota··on Airbnb will up its penalty for hosts who cancel last-minute from $100 to $1k
Hotels aren’t necessarily more expensive for short travels unless you are booking some of the bottom end airbnbs. For long stays though airbnb almost always wins out.
bogota··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
About time this happened. It has been widely known for a long time.

Crypto does not mean no regulations. Anyone who thinks that is likely a teenager who has not seen what happens to the average person when none exist.

bogota··on Tell HN: Salesforce has globally revoked Slack's holiday shutdown benefit
Seems like yet another way to force attrition by creating a shitty and depressing work environment. Seems to be all the rage these days so they get out of paying when they lay people off
bogota··on Spf13 is leaving Google
These comments are why i stopped sharing my work. You can clearly tell that it is not the authors intent but someone (you) will always take things personal when given the chance.
bogota··on FCC proposes to increase minimum broadband speeds to 100 Mbps
I can’t actually think of any where the client is the limit. However for some having faster server nodes that are hosted at peoples homes would help speed up some currencies such as nano.
bogota··on Stripe cuts internal valuation by 28%
You also get a really fun tax bill when you have been at the company for 4 years and they IPO.
bogota··on U.S. News pulls Columbia University from its 2022 rankings
Great to know many peoples graduations were delayed so someone could game some numbers
bogota··on Uber broke laws, duped police and built lobbying operation, leak reveals
I mean “inflict it on the rest of the world” come on. They wouldn’t be selling if you weren’t buying. Uber categorically provides a better service than taxis in almost all places and provides a far safer experience in others. But once again it’s likely some self righteous first world person’s opinion who has no context for how other countries function. Par for the course on HN.
bogota··on Oxide builds servers as they should be [audio]
Was going to say.. if they fit than in a 4U I’m about to make my datacenter 8 times smaller
bogota··on Governor Newsom announces California will make its own insulin
What middle class is moving to California?
bogota··on Venice to introduce entry tickets and fees
Same thing happens all over. Cruise ships and the people on them make otherwise enjoyable places absolutely terrible. After my first experience with it it’s something I check now and I won’t go to any place that cruise ships frequent.
bogota··on The crypto crisis has created an advertising vacuum
I mean crypto is just the most risky asset. You are seeing this in everything just look at tech stocks. But everyone on here wants to act like crypto is some malicious actor for whatever reason instead of realizing it just has much smaller volume.
bogota··on The crypto crisis has created an advertising vacuum
Maybe it does maybe it doesn’t. All of this discussion is founded in great TA and economics…
bogota··on The crypto crisis has created an advertising vacuum
Yea but not a constant percentage. A 50% in a month drop is much different than 10% drop of a much higher prices asset.

Anyway i would bet 2 bitcoin that it will not be down another ten thousand in a month. However im not aware of any escrow that would hold btc for one party and usd for the other as im sure you don’t want to bet in btc if you think that asset is dropping. Not without using some derivatives on eth that I don’t trust anyway.

bogota··on Is the Ride over for Uber?
That really doesn’t say anything. Those teams all do very different thinks depending on the problem space. You’re not really making an argument though you are just stating two situations and hoping people arrive at your conclusion of big company is stupid.
bogota··on Is the Ride over for Uber?
Im sorry you think you can maintain the rider and driver app with 15 engineers… I really can’t take anything else you say seriously as your knowledge of uber as a business discredited the rest of your thoughts.
bogota··on Scunthorpe Sans, A font that censors bad language automatically
I have never met anyone who thinks words should be censored in print. Maybe this is specific to the US?
bogota··on Upptime/upptime: Uptime monitor and status page powered by GitHub
I don’t love it. Overall the amount of things now that just boil down to use github/aws/google has really decreased my enjoyment of building projects. Additionally i haven’t seen it provide some huge boost in productivity like everyone likes to assume is happening.
bogota··on FTC takes action against CafePress for data breach cover up
This explains why I had about 20 random transactions from cafe press last year. I wasn’t even aware I ever used them.
bogota··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
Yep. They have already started talking about reversing marriage rights and contraception as well. It’s funny that an unelected body is now going to destroy the US and revert things that are clearly the majority opinion of the population.

Im glad I have dual citizenship because It does feel like the next 4 years is going to be a very sharp downturn (socially) in the US.
