Non paywall. Browsing the web absolutely sucks these days.

bogota··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
Trying to map BLS productivity data to WFH performance in the current economy and environment is absolutely crazy
bogota··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
Came exactly here to say this. Because of WFH im able to have a awesome job and see my family living in other countries and also my parents at home much more frequently now.

If you want to work in an office you can do that it’s your choice. Many people also have young kids and two working parents making the WFH flexibility ideal. Lots of reasons for WFH exist but they don’t matter. If you do your job and the company is happy why do we even need to have this discussion?

Like everything in life. Its all about extracting value from someone else who has no control over the exploitation. You only notice when you are the one being exploited though.

As long as some company can improve its bottom line it’s all good though

bogota··on I surveyed 500 startup founders about their salaries
Nice, someone with a company size of 26 to 50 got 50M of funding and is paying themselves out 1M a year working remote.

That is the life. I want to know what industry that is in.

bogota··on A Memory Safe Implementation of the Network Time Protocol
They are justifying the rewrite by saying that it is memory safe. I don’t think its a bad goal but if they don’t do the work to maintain and package these for distros it wont make it very far.

However im always surprised by how many people are fanatics of rust and they do contribute a lot to packaging at least for Gentoo which is my daily driver. I could see a lot of these taking off if it does show a reduction in attack surface and it works seamlessly as a replacement for existing solutions hopefully not forcing a new config on everyone.

bogota··on Kubernetes Hardening Guidance [pdf]
Not sure if you are joking but that is what it means
bogota··on Charles Mitchell and the 1929 stock crash
Really today its crypto? The tiny market and not the massively overpriced tech stocks trading way way above earnings. They have just slightly corrected from the covid mania but many are still trading at ridiculous multiples that everyone justifies with “they will keep growing”
bogota··on Show HN: SigNoz – open-source alternative to DataDog, NewRelic
I mean if that is the single thing stopping your company from using it then just add support for it. The cost of DD monthly bill more than supports spending a week or less it would take to add
bogota··on Google is shutting down Stadia
So shocked. I am just surprised it lasted this long
bogota··on ZincSearch – lightweight alternative to Elasticsearch written in Go
Are you constantly adding new users and having to update retention policies as users try to fill up your machines?
bogota··on Phorge: Going Public
Yes i love having “fixup”, “.”, and “oops” in the main branch commit history.
bogota··on Phorge: Going Public
Having more than one option should be generally seen as a good thing. I don’t think an open source project needs to justify its existence if you dont want to take the time to learn what it actually does
bogota··on Phorge: Going Public
You need to buy into the phab workflow which is diff based not branch based. Once you accept that the experience is awesome. For many people they don’t understand git enough unfortunately to appreciate the workflow not that it doesn’t have its flaws but it has worked amazingly on both large and small teams for me
bogota··on GPU mining no longer profitable after Ethereum merge
Why is the assumption that crypto has held back innovation? If anything normally pumping a ton of money into something causes more innovation to happen.
bogota··on A neurologist’s quest to solve Covid-related neurological disorders
Im not saying long covid doesn’t exist. Only that it is going to be really fun to figure out what it is when a lot of people think they have it.

All of those symptoms seem like they could be stress induced to me at any rate. If you find any reviewed studies let me know.

bogota··on A neurologist’s quest to solve Covid-related neurological disorders
I have a strong feeling a large amount of “long covid” may be the collective anxiety and stress combined with a reduction in social interaction
bogota··on What would a “good” WebMD look like?
Not to mention pretty much every health condition you look up will list that you have cancer or some mental illness.
bogota··on Americans will soon be able to renew passports online
That makes much more sense to me. Thanks for explaining.
bogota··on One kitchen, hundreds of internet restaurants
I mean i have been ordering for years from places i have never been and largely had positive experiences. But sure you can skip the convenience and save yourself the 2% of bad experience
bogota··on Americans will soon be able to renew passports online
How does this reduce fraud?
bogota··on Americans will soon be able to renew passports online
Why is a background check that includes references needed for a passport? Its not the governments job to determine if you are a likable person and i hope they don’t rely on those likely very shallow checks to determine anything.
bogota··on Americans will soon be able to renew passports online
Wow that is a really stupid rule I wonder what they are trying to accomplish with that. More unnecessary government crap.
bogota··on Show HN: Pornpen.ai – AI-Generated Porn
From the few results i tried it looks like we are far far away from that reality
bogota··on Most Texans pay more in taxes than Californians, data suggests
Way cheaper but the taxes on it are also high
bogota··on Most Texans pay more in taxes than Californians, data suggests
This misses the point. All states tax different things at different levels. You need to look at your personal situation and finances as well as lifestyle to see what makes sense.
bogota··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
Its a nightmare anything that will last is now “premium” and top of the line. You spend easily 4x what even a good one costs and then you get something that lasts as long as appliances did 30 years ago. Washers and dryer’s drive me mad not to mention most kitchen appliances.
bogota··on I've been designing a language since 2009 – friends and I implemented a beta
I get where your coming from but do you have an example of this happening for a programming language? I can’t think of any language that a company tried to extend and was successful with it. Its not a SaaS offering so the value add is very low for a company to try and take over development.
bogota··on Windows10Debloater: Script to remove Windows 10 bloatware (2021)
I mean if we are nitpicking ubuntu is pretty bloated you should compile your own os from scratch.
bogota··on 'Too many employees, but few work': Pichai, Zuckerberg sound the alarm
I just know of at least 20 people left my previous company because we had nothing to do. Every meeting was trying to figure out what the direction was. As an engineer when the company gets to the size of 1000+ you are largely not at all empowered to solve this problem but have to rely on your manager or in some cases your managers manager.

But come time for performance review you get bad marks. If you think that many people are just lazy for no reason you have no right to be managing or running a business.

Sitting around pretending to work all day is a recipe for depression and burnout. No one wants that.
