bogota··on Bitcoin falls under $16,000
Well at least we are being honest now haha
bogota··on Bitcoin falls under $16,000
Pretty hard to say since it depends on the price you pay for electricity. But you can just watch the difficulty adjusting to see when people have started to turn off miners
bogota··on Bitcoin falls under $16,000
Im sure this will lead to great discussion
bogota··on Ask HN: Why is there no way to lower amber alert volume on headphones?
The government gets to re discovered alert fatigue i guess… instead of just asking anyone who has ever been on call
bogota··on Signal Introduces Stories
I mean thats a slight inconvenience at the cost of not letting people be confused that they are not actually having an encrypted conversation. I still stand by my original statement and don’t understand how people are so mad about that. Sure “it sucks” you need another app now but the comments about this in the threat are treating it like signal is doing something malicious
bogota··on Signal Introduces Stories
I agree i don’t see how you can knock signal in anyway for removing sms. What is the argument that this was some huge misstep i just don’t see it
bogota··on Signal Introduces Stories
The more useful signal becomes to the non tech crowd the better for everyone. Options are good and they are largely competing with WhatsApp although they have tiny market penetration right now
bogota··on Thoughts on the “guard” proposal for Go's error handling
Ah yeah i was remembering wrong. I normally have this setup as a package level variable and then build and test. But yes its on the test that it’s actually caught
bogota··on Thoughts on the “guard” proposal for Go's error handling
Panic at compile and run time are two very different things. must will panic before you ship your code to production no should want to make panic at runtime look nice
bogota··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
Im talking about writing a letter
bogota··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
Missing the point. Sure pen and paper works great still.
bogota··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
If you look at anything through a narrow enough lens you can make it look good.
bogota··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
I agree but the person i am replying to is talking about using matrix
bogota··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
This doesn’t change the fact that signal is the best option for my grandma to use still.

Moxie is no longer active in signal afaik. This is the new leadership.

bogota··on NYC to require salary ranges be included in job postings
sad that the government is having to regulate you into humane practices. Already in NY and CO im sure this will just keep spreading.
bogota··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
Yes but i see about 90% of people using them on sidewalks unfortunately
bogota··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
I completely agree but also don’t think i will see that fixed in the US in my lifetime. Maybe you are more optimistic
bogota··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
Yes but people also aren’t expected to walk on roads with cars except at certain outlined points
bogota··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
Only issue i have is that they need to reduce the top speeds on the app based scooters. Way too many people flying around corners on the sidewalk and i have to peak around corners now in busy areas.
bogota··on The Tesla Cyberquad for kids has been recalled for not meeting safety standards
Are we calling him elmo now or is that just a typo? Pretty funny typo if nothing else. I hope it sticks
bogota··on “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints”
Just my opinion. But why would you lie about what will become a fairly big piece of news right before you are about to go through and be cutting a bunch of jobs. It would be almost certain to leak.
bogota··on “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints”
That happened before elon officially took over. He replied to a question about it on Twitter and i really don’t see him lying about it.

Im not a elon fan. At all. but the knee jerk reaction he gets at this point is kind of deserved… however you’re better off not falling into that trap.

bogota··on Ask HN: What Is the Hype with Docker?
Docker is pretty awesome for deploying your services and having an isolated environment that is the same everywhere. Although with the new M1 arm chips this is slightly breaking down since arm and amd have inherent differences that get introduced to the build environment unfortunately.

Docker is abused as a developer environment though and I hate seeing teams try and force everyone to develop inside a container that eventually gets merged with the service itself and turns into a 2GB image nightmare.

bogota··on Bumble releases open-source A.I. feature to help combat unsolicited nudes
> aggressively block photos of golden retrievers

That gave me a good laugh

bogota··on Is OpenStack fighting a lost battle?
That is true and why i tried to stay working in that area so long. AWS eventually ate my lunch so I have switched to a pure SWE role now and just happen to setup a lot of the cloud infra as well.

I’m hoping some time I can work on DC automation again though. Brings me a lot of joy to get to figure out why the brand new NICs are eating LLDP packets before they get to the hosts and other fun problems you never get to see in the cloud.

bogota··on Is OpenStack fighting a lost battle?
I have run multiple datacenter automation teams. Essentially providing the plumbing for provisioning bare metal.

We looked at open stack several times and never had a team large enough to justify trying to run it. It’s just way too complex and requires too many machines to get the full stack running. We could manage 5k plus machines with just 5 relatively small hosts and keeping the stack extremely simple.

Now you are going to say that we don’t provide the same features and that is true but the few cases where it would have been nice didn’t justify it.

I can write a datacenter automation system from scratch that i know won’t be causing me alerts at night faster than I can get a resilient openstack setup running. Unless that changed why would I use it.

bogota··on We are still early with the cloud
You can already do this anyway…

bogota··on Replit Mobile App
People have already got to that level without understanding the environment and hardware. I have worked with them and spent a lot of time explaining how the system works.

I personally don’t understand how people enjoy programming without understanding the stack they are ontop of but im sure some C and assembly programmers said the same thing about most of us today.

bogota··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
It’s crazy that they pay managers so much and don’t give them this autonomy at most companies
bogota··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
Thats great then find one of the companies that forces people to work from the office.

Don’t be upset when you have trouble finding talent unless you are paying out amazing salaries though.

This to me just gets into people trying to control other people. You have your preferences and thats fine but forcing it on others always causes problems.

If you start your job search with this requirement in mind though i don’t think people should have issues. I look for my jobs based on being listed as fully remote and the rest of the company being largely remote as well. As long as you aren’t at a company trying to force everyone back in the office I think its all good.

I do know my last company of size 1000+ has been trying to force people back slowly. 50% of my team left and now that they are pushing harder i am having people reach out to me every week about openings.
