bogota··on The reason employees aren't returning to work in America [video]
Being treated like garbage and a job inherently being shitty aren’t the same thing. People seem to confuse that.

All this is doing is driving automation at a faster pace and the people who once did the jobs will now have something new to complain about when they have no job available at all in 10 years

bogota··on The reason employees aren't returning to work in America [video]
Sure call it out but not working is what im talking about. Life is always unfair. I started working in 2009 I am familiar with shit jobs that pay nothing.
bogota··on The reason employees aren't returning to work in America [video]
I really don’t get this attitude. Are people just too full of themselves today to do menial work? I have a good job now but from before high school to after college I worked jobs in places were the customers were rude and treated you like shit along with your coworkers and managers. As far as I know you still need money to live do people think it’s now the responsibility of the government to take care of them if they have to work a job that sucks? I really can’t wrap my head around it it’s just not how i was raised. This just smells like entitlement at the same level people accuse “the rich” of having.
bogota··on I ruin developers’ lives with my code reviews and I'm sorry
I have worked with people like the author. They suck. They destroy entire teams and often times the feedback is 99% pedantic personal preferences because why would they do something useful like setup the linter and propose the silly things they always nit pick.

These people don’t last long and I have gotten pretty good at screening out this personality in interviews after having it cause huge issues at two different places I worked.

bogota··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
My family is pretty politically diverse and I would say none of them are ever happy with that is going on over the last 10+ years outside of a few things. Its just people making a choice about what they hate less.
bogota··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
Im getting the feeling our government’s have switched to economy over everything mode with a dash of pretend to care about the environment
bogota··on Todo-or-die – Provides procedural macros that act as checked reminders
I like the idea behind this but I wouldn’t even put this in a small project. I don’t want to break functionality just because.
bogota··on Generics enabled by default in Go tip
No I’m likely too dumb for them but my code base is clean and easy to onboard people to. I take great pride in new hires telling me something is easy to do after only working in it a week

And like i said generics have a place its just a way smaller place than many people think

bogota··on Generics enabled by default in Go tip
If i wanted or needed generics i would use another language. I have been able to write great code without them for 5 years now though. But now i get to defend my codebases from the unneeded introduction of them from largely developers who think they are too smart.
bogota··on Don’t Panic, but Breakthrough Cases May Be Bigger Problem Than You’ve Been Told
I refuse to even click on the above link or any headline with similar sensationalism. If this is the direction news is going to keep going i can only see how fun life is going to be in the future. Anything you say will be so triggering to someone one way or another for no reason.

I already know that at work I hardly talk to anyone anymore because of fear that something i say will set someone off. This wasn’t an issue 5 years ago i use to love talking with people at work even when they completely disagreed with me at least we could talk.

Its one of the things that has accelerated my save everything and invest everything so i can be done with this crap and get on with my life. Likely just move back by family where I can actually have a normal conversation.

bogota··on Don’t Panic, but Breakthrough Cases May Be Bigger Problem Than You’ve Been Told
Wow more headlines trying to cause panic. When will this end its so mentally draining.

At this point im sure the reporting on covid is causing just as many mental health issues as covid itself.

bogota··on I’m an ICU Doctor and I Can't Believe What Unvaccinated Patients Are Saying
Hard to read this it’s just way too editorialized by the author. We get it you’re mad about the pandemic and how it’s handled. Supposedly being a doctor gives you more credibility but only on vaccinations not on public health policy.

Anyway im sick of reading articles with no other point than to make you mad. But its HP what can you expect.

Edit: not really going to argue with anyone my point stands. Just another stupid piece made to make people mad. Your comments further reinforce this. Be mad but it doesn’t help.

bogota··on Air – Live reload when developing with Go
Yep it’s actually one of the things i love. If waiting for go compile time has gotten to be a problem it is time for tests or to refactor if a test can’t be easily written.
bogota··on Against Overuse of the Gini Coefficient
I’ll read the article again with this in mind but on first read it didn’t come across as trying to convince of anything other than using the gini coefficient isn’t insightful and he pointed out the flaws as he sees it.
bogota··on Against Overuse of the Gini Coefficient
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/ninabambys...

It was 1 billion at time of donation but sits at about 400MM now. Im not sure about his eth donations but he has shown he isn’t greedy for money.

The above was talking in dollars not ETH.

bogota··on Against Overuse of the Gini Coefficient
I think you will find in many places of life people are just trying to make a quick buck but in crypto this truth seems to cause a visceral reaction for people.

One of the problems crypto has is that it would be really hard to make a currency that was inflationary and still have any adoption. Bitcoin and others have tried various economic incentives to bring early adopters in and reward them. Is this the best way? Im not sure other coins like NANO have tried to distribute coins early by captcha and this was actually very helpful to people in poorer countries. Ultimately though most of them sold it as soon as they got it and the distribution looks to be about the same as bitcoin and others. Other solutions exist I’m sure but bitcoins decreasing inflation seems to be the best so far if you are making a crypto you want to succeed.

The same logic though could be applied to startups or any business. The first people in do a large amount of the work in helping it grow and are rewarded for that. Maybe too much but that’s hard to quantify.

Also reddit has never been the place to talk about tech. Most of the people buying hardly understand it. If you want to have better conversation they normally have developer channels. And again you could say the same thing about people talking about stocks on reddit.

Edit: a reminder not to downvote just because you disagree. This always happens in crypto threads and really just enforces that you always have the same discourse on them. Sad to see on HN i expect it on sites like reddid.

bogota··on Against Overuse of the Gini Coefficient
It’s not currently deflationary. It has less inflation over time yes but the two aren’t the same.

I don’t see why you think anyone is lording this over someone. The blog just addresses that the gini coefficient doesn’t fit well here. You can agree or disagree with that but you just seem to be hurling insults for whatever reason.

bogota··on Uber, Lyft drivers strike in Los Angeles
Its honestly not worth arguing about it. I have personally benefited with driving for uber as well as lots/most of drivers i have talked to. Its not perfect but it works great when you have kids and other things you have to worry about. The job was never meant to solve wealth inequality but it sure has helped a ton of people. Jesus my life would have been 100x better if i could have driven uber in college instead of working absolutely shit job with managers who hate you because you aren’t going to be stuck working this crap job until your 60 like them.

However if you go online you would think uber was killing peoples first born child. Internet forums are getting rather stupid over the past 5 years. You are mostly forced to use a few big ones that all have a hive mind of downvotes on anything contradictory to what the majority thinks. Unfortunately being the majority doesn’t make you right or even smart. Often times its the opposite. But i like to write up these posts so someone can downvote me and feel a little power.

bogota··on Uber, Lyft drivers strike in Los Angeles
Sounds like this just incentives the drivers who don’t care to hop on and make more money then they normally would.
bogota··on Show HN: Angle Grinder – A terminal app to slice, dice, and aggregate your logs
I have been using golang for cli applications for the past 6 years and love it. Been looking at rust but haven’t been convinced to try it out yet.

Any big win that I would get from a practical standpoint with rust that im missing with golang?

bogota··on Pay secrecy: Why some workers can't discuss salaries
I don’t want to know what bob or jill make but i do want to know the company pay bands. It’s really silly when im looking for other jobs that i pass everything then get to the offer to counter it and ooops looks like your 5k over the band for what we wanted to hire you for. Great would have been nice to know up front that unless I interview at whatever your requirement is for staff level on the day of the interview this wasn’t going to work. Its draining and a waste of everyones time.
bogota··on Ethereum London Mainnet Announcement
I think it evens out though because of a lot of early people with lots of bitcoin just lost interest and lost the wallet. This was sadly the case for me as well as a few other people i know.

By time eth came out though everyone was much better about backing up wallets you thought would be worth nothing.

bogota··on The hottest temperature ever reliably measured recorded in Death Valley today
You and others have not read my comment correctly. I know this is the case. Im asking why right now it is always on the front page all of a sudden and am simply asking if this is because the frequency has increased or is because its now profitable to print.

But from your own link it is the media pushing this now. Because this was really never something you saw in the news before but all of the sudden you see it ever other day.

bogota··on The hottest temperature ever reliably measured recorded in Death Valley today
Im seeing a lot of news lately about record heat waves. Presumably this has been happening for a few years now though although I’m not sure where i could get accurate info on that. Did the media just start pushing this to the from because its now a hot button issue that is selling more clicks?

Not saying its bad if it helps us take more action against global warming its likely good. But I’m still curious.

bogota··on DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants
Yes unfortunately almost all US and likely other computer science degrees are geared largely at making you a good researcher. I was lucky in that i loved playing with some home servers and with that led to figuring out how to build my own software before finishing school. I think college does a very bad job of preparing you for the real world use such as most having people turn in zip files and not even using git (maybe this has changed).
bogota··on Npm Audit: broken by design?
That is not the cost of false positives. The cost of false positives is ignoring it completely. I have had jobs where we just block the security scanners because they won’t listen to any feedback about why what they are scanning was intentionally setup for the purpose of testing vulnerabilities on an internal only network. Additionally at other jobs security tickets just start to get ignored because they send too many tickets that do not matter. I feel the security field likes to ignore most feedback and play holier than though. At all companies i worked at i have only had one good security team that worked with people instead of just throwing things over the wall.
bogota··on Drug-dealers are finding the always-on culture a chore
Unfortunately this seems to be how a lot of articles at the economist are produced now. Im having trouble finding any news now that the economist has also gone way down hill.
bogota··on Drug-dealers are finding the always-on culture a chore
Just yet another reason i dropped the economist. Over the last year i noticed articles getting continuously worse. And every time it was an article I had deep background in such as politics in latam or crypto currency’s the articles were easily to prove factually false. If the articles i did have deep understanding of are wrong i can no longer trust the publication.

It seems to me they are more interested in propaganda than publishing news now.

bogota··on Acer disables BIOS for laptops sold through Amazon? (2020)
Holy shit. I never had a good experience with acer but now i will never be buying one again.
bogota··on Don't encode POST bodies like GitHub Copilot, use URLSearchParams
I don’t understand. I never have copy pasted from SO after my first few years of work. At that point you normally are already using libs that take care of most things you would copy paste and are hopefully working ok things more complex than just piecing together sporadic SO posts.

The code i produced during my first few years isn’t something anyone should aspire to.

Additionally you likely learned over time that most SO posts are not great but provide a good starting point.
