A contraction of growth by even a few percentage points will push most economies into a recession.
Failure of the US economy will pull down other economies by a few percentage points. If this happened world wide there would be chaos.
Browsing through their docs, they are clean, beautiful, and indeed very fast. Hats off to the team that built this.
Find my a skeptic who has done surgery and seen the endometrial overgrowth on someone’s organs.
Every single woman I’ve talked to about it has described how difficult it has been to get treatment from male doctors. They all experienced skepticism about their symptoms and invalidation that what they were experiencing was real.
It’s really tragic that we don’t know more about this disease and don’t have really effective treatments yet.
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
It’s rude to assume that they don’t have friends that are local. It’s also weird to assume that local friends are more valuable or meaningful that remote friends.
And as a general rule, categorizing the way a specific person raises their kids based on an ill informed opinion about the general public is often received poorly.
He has been able to build and foster connections with friends who live on the other side of the country.
I’ve listened in on their conversations and they engage in imaginative free play as if they were in the same room. It’s a very different experience then when they play a goal directed game like Mario kart or smash bros.
Minecraft feels a very nice space in his life in ways that other games do not.
They did this to preserve them for later analysis
I've never thought about doing citizen science before, but I'm strongly considering it here.
The Tesla hype cycle is either nearing its end or peaked and I'm sure he knows this. The valuation for this company is ridiculous by any standard. So he's on to his next thing. By joining ranks with MAGA and he's purchased himself a driver seat for the most powerful country and strongest economy.
Obviously he still cares about Tesla, but it's not his primary focus anymore. He's moved on to his next big thing which I'm sure he expects to be many times more lucrative than Tesla was.
Most people are the parents of students going to school, teachers, trades people opening a store… they walk into BestBuy and they recognize the brand HP.
HP has massive marketing budgets and gets to package and discount their printers.
Most people think they’re getting an amazing printer at a great deal.
Without directly testing for a connection it’s extremely rare to get unexpected data that confirms an alternate hypothesis.
Even if the statistical tools are there, they can’t make up numbers that we haven’t collected yet.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to remind someone on the people/finance side that their systems work for the employees and not the other way around is astounding. “No we cant ask them to wait another month to get paid, no I don’t care our system doesn’t support it, fine pull out your check book and write them a physical check…”
Well run engineering organizations are like a well running engine. They need to have solid parts but they also need constant attention and fine tuning. The best managers do this well.
However, when the risks are huge, there is a merit to proceeding with caution.
There’s tons of prior art here when it comes to exploring new building materials, new pharmaceuticals, etc…
We've learned a ton in the last few decades about how interconnected and complicated ecosystems can be. Likewise we've learned that the deep ocean isn't disconnected from the surface. The two send resources, energy, and bio mass to each other.
Additionally, we are extremely reliant on the ocean in so many ways and ecological collapse of the ocean would be catastrophic for our planet.
So while yes we don't have a smoking gun that says "deep sea mining is going to destroy the planet" we are being pretty cavalier playing with things we do not understand.
That’s a huge gain in 20 years. Where is the commensurate equivalent growth in housing, education, healthcare, cheap food, etc…
There is a huge disconnect between GDP increase and the economic pressure the majority of Americans feel.
We’ve offshored manufacturing, cut funding for education, have failed to invest in infrastructure.
You could identify which world leaders are using ChatGPT pretty easily.
The most insidious part of this, is it gives us the feeling that we are still in control.
When in reality, a few extremely powerful and extremely wealthy individuals are in a position to dramatically shape and shift policy.
15 years ago Google was still pretty damn good. Today most people agree that it’s departed from its original goals and in its efforts to make money actively censors and shapes the results it serves.
The AI systems people use to make decisions will make this shift once they have a lock on the market.
It’s wild to see the creation of a technological equivalent to the medieval Catholic Church. an entity that represents itself as benevolent to the masses, but in reality, exploits them and maintains a stranglehold over the political ruling class.
The new features released since I bought version 6 has me more than satisfied.
Also using a password manager is one of the most effective things you can do to protect yourself and paying a few bucks a month seems like a steal.
