bognition··on Uv overtakes pip in CI
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has been using Python and has tried uv.

Python dependency management and environments have been a pain for 15 years. Poetry was nice but slow and sometimes difficult.

Uv is lightning fast and damn easy to use. It’s so functional and simple.

bognition··on How HubSpot scaled AI adoption
> We pulled metrics on code review burden, cycle time, velocity comparisons before and after adoption, and production incident rates.
bognition··on How HubSpot scaled AI adoption
Honestly its been pretty wild to see this company succeed over the years. They took on Salesforce and everyone predicted they were going to fail. Yet year over year they've continued to succeed.
bognition··on MAGA declares war on the property tax
NH has property tax and it’s actually quite high. They don’t have sales tax or income tax.
bognition··on US attack on renewables will lead to power crunch that spikes electricity prices
Amazing what you can do when the ruling class hasn’t spent the last 40 years undermining education and gutting services.
bognition··on Digg.com is back
People forget that there a billionaires at the helm of these companies putting their feet on the scale of what is shown.

They are not impartial nor are the benevolent. They have a vested interest in influencing the content people are exposed to. They can hide behind the “social” components and say “we’re innocent here we just show the content people engage with” meanwhile they directly influence what content gets a chance to be interacted with.

bognition··on ChatGPT Agent – EU Launch
Think of an agent as a standalone script or service. They have a single function take inputs and create outputs.

You can chain agents together into a string to accomplish larger tasks.

Think of everything involved in booking travel. You have set a budget, pick dates, chose a destinations, etc…. Each step can be defined as an agent and then you chain them together into a tool that handles the entire task for you.

bognition··on Beetroot juice lowers blood pressure by changing oral microbiome: study
Back in school I was often told the lead pipes in Roman aqueducts likely played a key role in the fall of Roman. We know lead is a poison with negative long term effects on cognition.

The aqueducts were also responsible for Romes ability to proliferate and grow. Lead was both a blessing and a curse.

I wonder what future generations will say about our highly enriched and processed diets. Calories have never been cheaper and food is ubiquitous. However I believe our food is playing a huge role in our degraded health.

It’s not surprising that most studies looking at the consumption of unprocessed food, fresh fruit and vegetables show benefits to our health.

The challenge is how do we get this food in the hands of those who need it cheaply and without sacrificing the nutritional (and microbial) content.

bognition··on I'm switching to Python and actually liking it
I’m on board with most of this. The one suggestion I’d add is to replace “make” with “just”
bognition··on Claude Code now supports hooks
Interesting how long ago did you do this? How long did you spend on it?

I was skeptical about Claude code and then I spent a week really learning how to use it. Within the week I had built a backend with FastAPI that supported user creation, password reset, email confirmation, a front end, and support for ouath into a few systems.

It definitely took me some time to learn how to make it work, but I’m astounded at how much work I got done and for so little typing.

bognition··on Positive link between cannabis use and 'Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events'
In my experience the HN crowd is generally interested in cutting edge science that is relevant to pop culture.

Ever since cannabis use has become normalized there has been a vigorous debate about its long term safety and the issue is far from settled. This study is another data point that we as individuals can use to make decisions about cannabis use.

You are right that in practices we can't just look at cannabis use in isolation from the rest of a persons lifestyle. However, science almost never starts with a comprehensive analysis. Instead it starts with smaller targeted studies that are then used to build the comprehensive arguments.

So while yes I it would be more useful know the risk of cannabis use relative to drinking alcohol, consumer sugar, lack of exercise, etc... this data point in an of it self is still useful.

bognition··on Airpass – Easily overcome WiFi time limits
This is an absurd way to think of this. Following this same train of thoughts for humans:

The business logic for humans is a single reproductive cell.

A single sperm weighs 2.3 x 10^-11 grams. If the average male weighs 75kg the. The bloat ratio for a human male is 3.2x10^15

Getting back to the app there is huge value in not needing to run the command yourself. Sure it’s wrapped in a UI that comes with “bloat” but honestly who cares. When was the last time someone needed to worry about hard drive space, when it comes to a 40mb file.

bognition··on Solving LinkedIn Queens with APL
I’ve noticed that many of the hard boards have a “choke point” in the solution where there are a small number of places you can place a specific queen but the information needed to place it can be difficult to gather.

A hacky trick is to place a queen and then ask for a hint. If deployed well, you can use this short circuit the challenge and often solve the puzzle in a fraction of the time.

There isn’t any penalty for taking a hint beyond you’re locked out of your next hint for a period of time.

bognition··on Nitrogen Triiodide (2016)
This was nearly 30 years ago, so honestly i don't remember much beyond the fun of hearing things explode under the wheels of my rollerblades

bognition··on Nitrogen Triiodide (2016)
Oh wow! Growing up my chemical engineer uncle would come out on the Fourth of July and dump a bucket of stuff on the road in front of his house. A while later when it was dried he'd have us roller blade and skate board down the road to setup all the little explosions. It was a total blast. He refused to tell anyone what the compound was, but assured us it could be easily made. It has to be this stuff.
bognition··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
Models are only as good as the data that is fed into them. OpenAI is paying Reddit 70M for access to the data. So the real value here is the conversations, not the model.

And in the case of Telegram, you will get very intimate data about people. You know in real time who they are talking to, what they are talking about, etc... Its extremely valuable data

bognition··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
I can't help but think this means that all my telegram conversations will now be fed into grok. I'm curious how I'd go about verifying that this is or isn't going to be the case.
bognition··on Jules: An asynchronous coding agent
i use both. I think Gemini produces longer more complicated answers. ChatGPT is more succint, but it could be b/c I've trained ChatGPT how to talk to me.

The context window difference is really nice. I post very large bodies of text into gemini and it handles it well.

bognition··on Jules: An asynchronous coding agent
I already pay $20/month for Gemini, I clicked sign up and had access instantly.
bognition··on What happened to American manufacturing is not unusual
To what end? To establish a healthy society where people are free to explore and take risks.

It’s not that complicated. Remove the risk of failure by giving people money for food, a place to live, an education, and protect their health.

There is a reason that many successful founders came from money. That kind acted as a safety net that allowed them to bet big. Not everyone with money goes on to establish a big business but the rate of success is far higher for those with money.

bognition··on Push Ifs Up and Fors Down
No that’s not how this works. You register the middleware with your web framework and it gets called as part of all web requests before the request hits your endpoints. This allows you to trust that authentication has been called for all api calls
bognition··on Push Ifs Up and Fors Down
If you are explicitly calling authenticate() for each api, you’re doing it “wrong”. At that point you want implied authentication not explicit authentication. Why not move it to some middleware that gets called in every api call?
bognition··on Git Bug: Distributed, Offline-First Bug Tracker Embedded in Git, with Bridges
honestly cleaning up the Readme and documentation would go a very long way, right now all the information feels fragmented behind all of the little pages. I clicked into the documentation and clicked the first link presented to me on each page and 5 clicks or so in I was on the command line docs but I hadn't seen anything that gave me a high level overview of what git-bug is, what it does, why I want to use it, etc...

I understand that documentation can be hard and you need docs for newbies and long time users, but as a newbie I cannot for the life of me figure out what this is.

bognition··on Notes on rolling out Cursor and Claude Code
Have you installed the Claude cli tool?

Think of it as an LLM that automagically pulls in context from your working directory and can directly make changes to files.

So rather than pasting code and a prompt into ChatGPT and then copy and pasting the results back into your editor, you tell Claude what you want and it does it for you.

It’s a convenient, powerful, and expensive wrapper

bognition··on Foundation DB Record Layer SQL API
I remember learning about FoundationDB a decade ago and being deeply impressed with what they built. Then it was acquired by Apple and went silent. Since then we've seen an explosion in new database storage layers. I'm curious is FoundationDB still the new hotness or has it been replaced by newer better technologies?
bognition··on Scientists Develop Artificial Leaf, Uses Sunlight to Produce Valuable Chemicals
Efficiency is likely much lower than solar panels, however, solar panels are expensive and complicated (chemically) to manufacture. Teaching plans to make stuff for us is a better long term solution as we can just grow the plants.
bognition··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
Group chat has always been the killer social app. 6 years ago I convinced my browser friends group to adopt Telegram and since then we’ve all abandoned FB, Instagram, etc… We have a ton of different threads all with different topics: kids, food, gardening, exercise, pets, memes, and a bunch of serious topic threads as well.

It’s been incredibly effective at keeping us connected and engaged as we’ve all moved across the country and grow in an apart physically.

The take away is; what people want from social media is to be connected with their real friends. However that isn’t as engaging as a random feed, so the companies push people away from that.

bognition··on Deafening Silence from the Cybersecurity Industry
Welcome to America where the only God is the greenback
bognition··on Adipose tissue retains an epigenetic memory of obesity after weight loss
Despite being looked down on, it's still very common. I know several people who have had liposuction. The results are only temporary. Everyone I know that has had this procedure has rebounded back to their original body weight within 2 years.
