bobblywobbles··on Show HN: Cookbook App
I saw your post and wanted to look at it later, so I did. I know it's in alpha so I'll reply accordingly.

I like parts of your app. I like the idea behind "leveling up" your cooking, building upon skills/difficulty so that you can feel like you are both progressing in flavors and skills. Where I felt it didn't hit the mark for me was the way some of the cards were ordered. I think from the "you need to cook to unlock" perspective, it's good to have all of your meats/veggies at the top, but I found the "difficulty"/leveling up aspect broke down when I saw bread/rice/eggs/spices at the bottom. I would expect in simple recipes to incorporate some of those ingredients.

Color scheme - I thought it was great. Minor UX tweaks but I know it's probably already something you are aware of.

Recipes were lacking actual measurements and I suspect that's just because this is an alpha build.

I didn't get the "competition" part of it. I guess I considered this a solo activity, but if a competition is what you'd like to make out of this, I'd try to call that out in a clearer way.

The sync/shopping list features I felt made the page try to feel like it was trying to be everything. I think eventually it makes a lot of sense to add these features in, as all the data can play well together.

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2021 – Show and tell
This is a fantastic idea!
bobblywobbles··on I created a video game for tired gamers. Now I have to find them
The game looks interesting! I don't have a playstation but think I would pick it up if I had that platform.
bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: How does one do it all?
We cannot do it all; of course that should not dissuade us to be lazy or not attempt to reach goals we have set for ourselves! As other's have made similar comments, having a good balance of activities leads us to pursue our interests, grow, have hobbies, and be involved in our communities. Everyone varies, but I would recommend to:

Exercise 2-3 times a week Have social time with friends at least once a week Make effort to stay close to your family Give yourself free time to explore/grow/have a hobby Eat fresh/local/natural food to maintain your health Donate your time/talent/treasure to others Always invest in growing/learning

*Also - the mere question of asking how we can do it all implies that this life is the only thing worth living for. I might get down-voted here, but there is a life after this one, through Jesus. Having this understanding gives me peace in so many things. I would recommend exploring Christianity/Catholicism if you haven't yet before.

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
I too have felt this same feeling, it's normal that everyone experiences this in ebbs and flows in life. Ultimately though, there's hard truths I had to face in order to get through this hump:

1) I tolerate this pain, which is why I am not changing my circumstances. 2) I believe that I myself don't have control over my own happiness/life.

Once you have hit that point where you can't tolerate the pain, make the change. Say to yourself that you don't want to live your life this way, and start doing what you like without caring what others think about you. Hope this helps!

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: What extensions/packs of VS Code are must for web/developers to install?
Thanks for trying it out!
bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: What extensions/packs of VS Code are must for web/developers to install?
(Note) self-promotion

I needed cells in Excel to be translated into a list that SQL would like. I copied rows from Excel into VSCode, and would run a series of regex commands to format it into a valid SQL list. I got tired of running this manually, and turned it into an extension.

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: Tools you have made for yourself?
I frequently needed to look up x records by id/name/etc. I knew the values, but needed to format them to work in SQL! I took my list and copied it in a text editor and had to run multiple regex commands to format the list so it could be used in SQL, ie. ('value1', 'value2', 'etc').

I got tired of this and built a VSCode extension: https://github.com/reZach/listtosql

bobblywobbles··on Vaccine-Induced Covid-19 Mimicry Syndrome
Thank you for summarizing this for us, I was hoping to get a good summary of the article!
bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: What open-source projects you built yourself? How you maintain it?
I've built secure-electron-template [0] which is a secure-by-default Electron template for writing apps. I made it open source because I'm not motivated to build this for a profit (then it becomes work). The project is sustainable because it's a template, and once people decide to use it, they make their own changes to their app. It's assumed a template is, a template. This doesn't make me any extra work besides fixing bugs here and there or improving things at my own pace.

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?

bobblywobbles··on Tauri: An Electron alternative written in Rust
I appreciate the desire to move towards a lower memory footprint, but it seems they are still many months behind the Electron team and what they are doing.

I am a bit bias, I am the author of a security-focused Electron template.

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: Building a Meal Ministry App
That's the intention, but for DH, the secret key needs to be stored on each client. My thought is the web browser needs to save the key locally in order that encryption/decryption can happen locally.
bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
I have a few, no desire to monetize. Just built them to help!

Tired of copying rows from Excel files into SQL insert statements? Try using this VS code extension: https://github.com/reZach/listtosql

An Electron template with security practices baked-in: https://github.com/reZach/secure-electron-template

bobblywobbles··on Discord Desktop App RCE
Needless self-promotion; this is why I came up with this template, to build secure electron apps. It is obvious that current industry has not caught up with secure practices for Electron apps, and I hope this template can help people in their endeavors.

*contextIsolation is turned on in this template, so the RCE as described in the article is prevented.

bobblywobbles··on Children Who Play Video Games Are Better at Working Memory Tasks
Basically, people who are exposed to simulations (video games) as a child have more knowledge/memory/awareness of patterns that are used in these games. Due to the general fact that video games tend to drive players to a goal, people who played video games as a child tend to have an easier time focusing on the details of an environment (in this study, processing 3d objects) and ignore details that are not relevant for the task at hand.

It is important to note that the difference between [past] video game players and non video game players, is that the difference in ability to process these 3d objects lessened once players spent time in training exercise (presumably from the article says, Super Mario 64).

Not groundbreaking, but it makes solid sense to me. The rewards-driven nature of games helps promote patterns of learning/memory that help accomplish the task. These same patterns stay with the person as they get older and they can apply the same principles to tasks outside of video games.

bobblywobbles··on Bleeding-edge tech will kill your startup
Bleeding edge tech is not necessarily bad; not understanding demand, or communicating to your customer or having a market for your product is bad. This is ultimately what the post is about.
bobblywobbles··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
When CEO's feel they aren't paid fairly, let's raise their salary, yet many millions cannot make enough to have an average life in America.

I'm not an advocate of socialism, but I think there should be more thought about egregious CEO salaries. Like another poster said, why are not CEO salaries tied to performance? Almost every other role in a company's salary is tied to their individual performance.

bobblywobbles··on Out running this morning and a lady runs past me
Terrible! This should be disabled by default! Safety first always!
bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: Why would I do `gh repo clone` instead of simple `Git clone`?
For cloning, yes, git makes more sense. These changes are for people who want to automate the Github end of it. Personally, I don't see an immediate need yet, as I like using the UI (easier for my brain to remember).
bobblywobbles··on Nvidia RTX 3080 cards are selling for thousands on eBay, and people are pissed
Have a read at this. On this OP's opinion, which he's spoken to people close to the issue, Nvidia is purposely limiting stock and giving better cards to reviewers, in hopes they will be seen in a positive light, only to upcharge customers for lesser-quality models when the "stock" frees up in October.

bobblywobbles··on YouTube Regrets Reporter browser extension
I do think that some human intervention needs to be put in these algorithmic recommendations. Too often we think it's some "group" suggesting videos when in reality I tend to believe it's simply an odd-case in the programming that's causing us to see videos on YT.

To the point of anti-LGBTQ videos being reported. I know people who identify as this group, and I don't think they are any less than anyone else. I do think it's fair to hold the opposite position, namely that we are born straight, and accept discussion between the viewpoints and not only consider anti-LGBTQ viewpoints as wrong. In either case any hateful videos shouldn't be uploaded, but consider free discussion between both sides is still appropriate.

bobblywobbles··on Nvidia’s Ultimate Play
This needs to be up-voted more, I knew it looked too good to be true.
bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. - Romans 8:28

In this verse I have grown in confidence that by desiring to become a good person, God is going to help me in all aspects of my life, ALL of them. Not just finances, or my career, or health, EVERYTHING. It is very powerful [essential] to have this belief; it carries me through life and will until the end.

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: How do you control distractions or addictions?
Like another poster said, put your distraction in a physically-distant location. The farther it is, the more energy it's going to take to fall into your bad habits.

Nip the thought of your habit the soonest you possibly can. You are thinking about playing a game? STOP! Thinking about wasting time? STOP! This not only helps you avoid the activity but strengthens your resolve while the need to distract yourself dissipates.

Get involved with others. We fall into addictions/habits because we can tend to be lonely [or otherwise avoid our feelings]. Reach out to friends, plan an online game night, call a friend. The more you involve others, the more help you will see it has on you.

Ultimately what helped fixed myself was a combination of:

- therapy

- praying [to God] (ultimately I needed this to finally rid myself of my distractions, everything else included)

- community

- persistence

There will be many many times where you fail too, and you shouldn't beat yourself up about it, but instead accept it and try again.

bobblywobbles··on Ask HN: What are the mundane work you faced in your company? What did you do?
We have work that revolves around a CMS. For releases, we usually have changes to make in content, and the process is painfully slow. These changes are rendered as PDF documents, and so in order to test your changes you have to run the whole application to see your change. Each "run" takes about a minute, but you can imagine how quickly it adds up.

I got assigned this work and I was immediately aghast that I would have to do such work, and I took it upon myself to improve the system [in my free time] so that this process is efficient and doesn't make me want to hate myself.

So, in your case, you take the initiative and ask if you can change what's mundane work. If they say no, ask if they would consider if you did the work for free. They might consider it then, but if they don't - look to passing off the work to someone else, or if all else fails, look to find another job. Nothing is worse than working for a company who does things because "that's the way we always do it." These companies are going to have hard times adjusting to new technology and frankly aren't going to help you advance your career either.

bobblywobbles··on A guide to learning algorithms through LeetCode
Thank you for your guide. I do apologize in advance, but this tutorial, like others, simply goes into the _what_ to do and doesn't explain the _why_.

Forever math will be about memorizing these "tricks" and not understanding it intuitively - can someone please help offer some suggestions to me?
