bmeski··on Unvaccinated workers who lose jobs ineligible for unemployment benefits (Canada)
Mandated COVID-19 vaccination of individuals with the current EUA approved vaccines.

The devil is in the details. The EUA designation was pushed through because there was no other, "obvious" treatment (despite proven efficacy of a combination of prophylactic treatments).

They are testing this thing on us. Even if it works I do not consent to be tested on.

Within my family, they weigh the risks of what they believe the side-effects are and the disease.

They all live in very remote areas with few people so the risk is low to begin with. They aren't entirely "unintelligent", and I respect their decisions.

lack of proper early treatment is why the virus has killed so many. The vaccines do not work as they were EUA approved to do.

I work for a major news organization in the US and am willing to lose my highly paid job to assert my rights.

I desperately urge others who are also capable to take such a hit to follow suit.

Edit: Note, I'm also vaccinated. J&J March 2020.

It’s really sad to see smart people argue against their own interests.

This is not good.

Read the papers and fine print on everything. Science should be inherently skeptical. If you haven’t read the papers and understood them, you have no business claiming this person is spewing disinformation or not.

Your opinion is not yours otherwise.

Example, the CDC points to an Arizona study about mask efficacy in public schools. The study did not address the large range of total days in school for each district/school. Some unmasked schools were in session almost 3x longer than the masked ones, so of course there was more spread. Also there was no specification if the spread occurred at home or in school.

I understand this is a horrible disease and we need to do our best to get through this, but there is some seriously janky/inept science going on.

No mandates.

No vaccine passbooks or apps.

Return jobs to employees lost because of vaccine compliance/rebuild small businesses (If this is somehow possible but the damage is already done).

No mask requirements.

Covid-19 Vaccines are available and treated in the same way as flu vaccines once FDA approved.

Yknow, normal.

bmeski··on Engineers should invest in decision-making skills early
The goal could be something as simple as, “design a search page.”

Product/bizfuck person will re-think autocomplete, client-side rendering of results, want categories of results that don’t exist in the data, dynamism for each user that can’t exist given the data.

Developer wants to build search page like every other one so that we can get to market faster and move onto something that will actually affect the business.

Everyone has different priorities but the engineers are usually based in reality as we have to actually make the f’ing thing.

bmeski··on Maybe we could tone down the JavaScript (2016)
Totally agree. I implemented a page with tons of posts on it that will hide the posts before the provided cursor in the url and I simply show hide them with display: none. Even if it’s 100 posts hidden, the images are lazy and clicking “show” unhides all of them immediately. If new posts come in we simply append to the top of the parent container with basic DOM apis.

The app were replacing with this page is heavy react and there’s a long visual stutter during the show hide because it has to render them all. Not simply show/hide. They actually load more bits to lazy load the posts in JS than to simply send the html and hide/show.

Bingo
bmeski··on Maybe we could tone down the JavaScript (2016)
It’s not a failing of the tooling. It’s a failing of designers and product to understand what a web page is and what an application is.

If youve only designed/“Ideated” for iOS or Android, you have no business designing for web. Entirely different platform with different capabilities.

Embrace reality and build simple effective products. Literally no one gives a shit about the arrows on your carousel or the border radius animation on a button. I just want to scroll and click and open new tabs.

I’ll keep complaining about it as my parents age and struggle to use their tv apps to watch shows because every product manager needs to prove that they can reinvent the search interface.

bmeski··on An Inconsistent Truth: Next.js and Typesafety
I agree that this stuff is getting out of hand.

The most important part of all that code is the part in the prisma calls, which would handle all the caching and request logic.

The rest is literally just making sure you name your stuff correctly and render it.

If you want actual type safety for your large client-side app, use rust/wasm. If your client side app is small, why do any of this?

Definitely not. But you’re still allowed in a car with someone who is not. You have options. You’re not mandated to stay at home if you choose to drink.
bmeski··on Omicron Update: Nov 27
You shouldn’t be allowed to have kids because they use both gas and electric resources which are destroying the earth for my nieces who are already born.

That's only if the gene's to express an appendix ever go away.

I always think back to Richard Dawkins explaining how a particular vein in a Giraffe's neck is wrapped around a lower neck bone and has grown 2x to accommodate the long neck instead of regrowing in a more efficient way (not wrapping).

bmeski··on How learned helplessness happens in engineering teams
This is the current norm.

Most Tech Directors or Tech Managers at my massive media company were previously front end or full stack devs who were good at coordinating (asking questions and never internalizing the answers).

Since they talk to so many people and have great rapports, they can easily manage people and conversations but they cannot manage a technical system because they think they can negotiate with it.

Usually the shit they need to know is 2 bash scripts and what build is in what env. Simple enough if you are so well educated with a degree and half a brain.
