bm1362··on How IBM quietly pushed out 20,000 older workers [video]
Anecdotally, I’ve had 2 friends leave companies where they owed a bonus to the company (50k) - one paid it back and one didn’t. The one who didn’t, never heard from them and it’s been over 2 years now.

Not advocating this, but don’t be miserable over a small sum of money. They’ll probably work with you on a repayment plan if necessary.

bm1362··on Interactive Go programming with Jupyter
This is super cool, but I’d like to know more. You can’t reload plugins without changing the plugin path and any shared references won’t get GC’d, from what I remember. I tried to do server handler hot reloading via plugins and ran into this a while ago.
bm1362··on Distributed architecture concepts I learned when building a large payment system
It's mostly Go/Java.
bm1362··on Distributed architecture concepts I learned when building a large payment system
I worked on payments at SoundCloud where we used Adyen as well. I didn't get much exposure but superficially it wasn't ideal. Integrations were wonky for each country and we had to glue it all together.

Uber recently open sourced Cadence, which is similar to AWS SWF [1] and built by the same principal engineer. A good overview was presented at Data @ Scale [2] if you're interested. Under the covers, it manages a set of queues for you and lets you write procedural business logic in a resilient way as an implicit workflow.

bm1362··on Go gets preliminary WebAssembly support
Off topic: is it possible to build a JIT compiler for Go or does the runtime prevent that?
bm1362··on Building a Text Editor for a Digital-First Newsroom
Is there a web-based WYSIWYG editor?
bm1362··on Sneak Peek at WebAssembly Studio
It seems like it’s becoming more and more toxic. It’s a place to get your product or project criticized and reduced to the sum of its parts, rather than support.
bm1362··on Uber enters dockless bike wars with Jump acquisition
It's much harder to bike in SF without an electric assist. I biked for 2 years in Seattle with no problems, moved to NYC and enjoyed the occasional trip over the Williamsburg bridge. Now in SF and I've only tried to bike once. It was fun bombing the hill outside but I immediately hit another hill and another.. I've essentially given up on riding here.

I use Jump regularly to run errands when I'm downtown and it's much easier to pickup/drop off bikes than it would be worrying about my own expensive bike getting stolen. These aren't quite dockless as they have to locked up properly and are tracked by the app/gps.

bm1362··on Many People Taking Antidepressants Discover They Cannot Quit
If you're interested in working for a startup working on improving the physical health -> behavioral health system integrations, checkout https://www.quartethealth.com/ in NYC.
bm1362··on God Save Austin
I worked at Polycom for two years out near the Freescale campus. Talk about a lifestyle company, the product (cheaper conference phones than Cisco) barely changed and we had so many company outings. I felt it was a scam, like some kind of middle class adult daycare.
bm1362··on God Save Austin
I graduated with a CS degree and the offers in my peer group were pitiful. TXDOT, USAA, Defense Contractors etc.

The best companies were Visa and Intel, back in 2013.

It’s definitely not a place where you can hop around every 2 years working for big brand names on the coolest tech (read: Java). A higher-end salary is 70-90k with maybe an ESPP vs a 300k package on the West Coast.

I’m definitely eager to go back but damn every time I check whoshiring it’s deflating.

bm1362··on God Save Austin
I’m from Austin and have met many tech people who want to move there. They’ll get a rude awakening when they actually look for jobs- it’s slim pickings and the satellite offices there for major tech companies often work on pretty boring products.
bm1362··on Toyorm – ORM for Go
I also work alone on a Go service and have some complex models. I used Gorm and then for complex selects broke out the raw sql. It works okay, I’m still having to bolt on things like OCC and Versioning to my models. I’m glad I used it though- it gave me a solid foundation to work off and replace the bits that don’t quite work well.
bm1362··on Gron: A command line tool that makes JSON greppable
If you’re stuck on a foreign box or don’t want to install a new tool:

cat xyz | python -mjson.tool | grep foo
bm1362··on The Effective Tech Lead Is a 100x Engineer
I've been a tech lead in the past and am currently a tech lead for a 1-man project. I agree with the sentiments here: if you're contributing a significant amount of code then you're probably failing the rest of the team in some way.

It's hard to be on top of everyone else's work, the architecture, the weekly planning and the external team syncs while also trying to write features.

Being alone, I'm basically taking shortcuts to get results until I have more bandwidth or get a team member to help shore things up. The goals and deadlines were set way above my head so unfortunately outcomes are prioritized as it stands.

bm1362··on Arizona governor and Uber kept self-driving program secret, emails reveal
More so federal funding has bent states into the shape that the federal government wants them to be. Funding with strings and the interstate commerce clause subdued the States’ power realistically.
bm1362··on Theranos and Zenefits are a feature, not a bug, of Silicon Valley
On the other side, do we want to treat every project like a medical device?

In the vast majority of sane engineering orgs there isn’t gross negligence and developers are very cautious (hence the popular evil PM / incompetent manager trope) to the point that they barely move at all.

bm1362··on Omaha man ‘liked’ a tweet, then lost his job
I’m in SF and get paid 13,750 USD a month and take home $8328 after taxes (no 401k deferral) which is roughly 39.5%.
bm1362··on One take on working in some of the major tech companies
I do miss the Amazon design reviews; where we’d all ready the design in silence and then discuss. In the few jobs I’ve had since then, people are less engaged in reviews and often unprepared- asking basic questions to earn their participation badges.
bm1362··on Instacart has raised another $200M at a $4.2B valuation
There are a subset of users on HN that can be hyperbolic. I've worked at a few well known companies and every time they come up here you get some vocal minority outraged about the product/pricing/culture/tech/anecdotal experience etc. I think it's truly toxic (yet entertaining) and definitely deflating as an employee. There is a lack of empathy for other people, companies and a deep inability to disconnect the two. I've noticed a hyper-rationalism here that reduces every company and product into the sum of it's parts and deems it outrageous- which to me comes across as unhealthy (reminds me of going to lunch with an engineering team that optimizes the route, their orders, seating, etc).

Congrats on the raise and good luck with everything.

bm1362··on Ask HN: How do you quickly test out new product/app ideas?
I worked on a Hackathon project that received an award from the sponsor and seemed like a good idea. My team of 4 was stoked and ready to continue building the service but one more experienced dev was hesitant.

He advocated putting up a beta sign up page with some mock images; to wait and see if we were going to get traction.

Sure enough, he was right. We got tweeted by Etsy and expected a rush of sign ups- we only got 1. It was from a guy I met at the airport whom I told about the project.

bm1362··on The Woman Behind Two Men and a Truck
I hired these guys and they never showed. I was in contact with them every hour, being reassured they were just running late. Eventually they stopped responding.

By midnight I gave up and threw half my stuff on the curb and UberXL’ed my clothes and small items to my new apartment.

Unfortunately I had a flight at 3am so couldn’t handle a cancelation, which is my fault.

bm1362··on Ask HN: Flexible, lightweight build automation/CI tool?
Drone is an open source CI/CD alternative.
bm1362··on How do Ruby and Python profilers work?
As an aside, I liked your response to being wrong and would totally work with you.
bm1362··on Re: Moving from PHP to Go and Back Again
Have you tried thcurl or yab for debugging RPC? I’ve found that most services I consume using thrift have a yab template for easy testing and trace ids so I can follow the request- I haven’t really missed hand writing JSON curls yet.

bm1362··on A Final Farewell
Yeah I also met with them but they were waiting to hear back about headcount. It’s too bad, there product was useful.
bm1362··on U.S. judge says Uber withheld evidence, delays Waymo trial
I use Keybase, Signal, even Snapchat daily. I wonder if a lawyer could pervert that into ‘shady’ behavior.
bm1362··on The beginning of the end for copper wire
It’s not destroying the infrastructure, it’s abandoning it. The article states that prior to this ruling they’re required to maintain or replace with comparable functionality for existing copper customers.

This ruling let’s them abandon them altogether from what I gathered.

bm1362··on Uber loses court appeal against drivers' rights
I think they were proposing using a distributed ledger to advertise rides / driver / rider state -- not just payments.
