bloudermilk··on Ask HN: What books have most influenced the way you see the world?
The two books I've read that have shaped my worldview the most:

Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein - A classic SciFi novel that digs deep on relationships, politics, and religion. Like a lot of old SciFi, it's filled with blatant sexism. If you can look past that, it has a lot of great lessons.

Island by Aldous Huxley - a beautiful look at alternative societal structures, psychedelics, and the cruelty of the western world overcoming sacred places.

bloudermilk··on SPAs are harder and always will be (2013)
Firebase is a solution, not the problem. The problems are:

* How do you allow users to continue using your SPA without a network connection?

* How do you enable snappy and responsive UIs when the network is slow?

* How do you synchronize state between client/server?

These are just some of the "hard problems" that you'll face building an SPA. Firebase has its own solutions but many other tradeoffs. All I'm saying is that we don't have hardened open source solutions for these problems yet, in the same way that we have Rails/.Net Core MVC/Django for traditional websites.

bloudermilk··on SPAs are harder and always will be (2013)
Being in the middle of a non-trivial SPA build, I can't agree that the technical difficulties are "solved", especially if you want to build on open source tech. Specifically, my project was prototyped in Firebase and for various reasons needs to be moved off. Now I'm left building a lot of plumbing that just isn't available outside of Firebase. In the end, our result will be less capable than the Firebase equivalent because we don't have time to engineer features like offline support and optimistic updates. There are a lot of tradeoffs to be made in order to avoid "hard problems" that are still very prevalent. I'll be happy to be proven wrong :)
bloudermilk··on Busting myths about BigQuery
Respectfully, I’m not seeing how your employment at Google or your being on a plane is relevant to my comment. If you had the experience I do working at marketing agencies for brands such as Google, I suspect you wouldn’t find my theory near conspiracy territory. I concede that such a play likely wouldn’t be considered well-executed given the timing, but it’s entirely within the realm of possibility.
bloudermilk··on Busting myths about BigQuery
It’s a shame you’re getting downvoted, since you’re right about the content. The list of “truths” isn’t anything more than a feature list. I got to #4 before coming to the comments, where I found the top three comments were all well-written positive reviews of the product. The whole submission screams of a well-executed marketing play.
bloudermilk··on How to not waste time on a side project when trying to get a job
Like you, I find it extremely relaxing to build pointless things. Do you have the same trouble I do in explaining that this isn't "work" to people close to you?
bloudermilk··on Face ID flop: Chinese colleagues can both authenticate iPhone X
Flagged. Site redirects to phishing site on iOS

Are you speaking of a literal filter? Or is this more of a personal practice?
bloudermilk··on Student Loan Debt Is Now as Big as the U.S. Junk Bond Market
> I can imagine that that would stimulate a huge influx of people who do that simply as an excuse to take a 4-year vacation

In practice this isn't a problem, at least not in France where my partner studied. Students that qualify for free public education are in the top of their class for the year. In order to keep qualifying for free education they must keep their grades up. So this idea of students graduating high school, waltzing into a university, then screwing off for four years is pure fiction.

bloudermilk··on Alex Honnold Scales El Capitan Without Ropes, and the Climbing World Reels
I got started by bouldering at the gym, which is an incredibly fun physical and mental challenge. It's all low-height (sub 15') climbing without any ropes over soft pads so you can fall without hurting yourself. After a couple of years I've built up the confidence to start rope climbing, but I know plenty of climbers who only boulder.
bloudermilk··on Confirm or Deny: Peter Thiel
Agree that the format is dense, but most of the content is complete drivel. I'm surprised to see this on the front page.
bloudermilk··on NeverSSL
Leaving this feedback here because there's no contact info on the page: for the purpose of accessing captive portals, it would be a good idea to disable page caching. Since this was posted I've had to use it twice and the second time I had to hard refresh to see the portal.
bloudermilk··on Ask HN: What is your hardware/garage side-project?
I'm currently converting a cargo van into a camper van suitable for full-time living. I bootstrapped the project out of a garage in two weeks and will now be doing most of the work in SF out of the van itself. It's an exercise in woodworking, metal working, solar/electronics, and interior design. I'm documenting the build on Instagram (same username) if anyone wants to follow along.
bloudermilk··on Facebook, Amazon, Google, IBM and Microsoft Create Partnership on AI
As someone who's left Facebook, I respectfully disagree. Without a backup plan in place to keep in touch, quitting FB was akin to losing a large chunk of my address book. Facebook was simply my only means of communication for a significant portion of my acquaintances. It's not about some philosophical debate about what a "friend" is.
bloudermilk··on World's first embeddable HTML5 document viewer, from Crocodoc (YC W10)
Wow! A very impressive UI. Love the UX of the download feature. I hope these guys go far—they're certainly on the right path. The only thing I would have like to have seen is hover states on the buttons.
