blondin··on The case for banning children from social media
both, sure, are social media. people on hn, for instance, use their real names, put their emails in their bios, link to their website or linkedin, etc.

not everyone stays pseudonymous.

blondin··on System76 Open Firmware
your dell xps, afaict, has a better build than the system76's lineup. the build quality is not there yet. among other things...
blondin··on Action Button Replacing Mute Switch in iPhone 15 Pro
we need a mandatory, enforced, mute functionality in all media apps. the button is extra. most apps are ignoring your volume settings. they all seem to have their own settings.

tiktok is my go-to example. i seldom open the app because i have no idea how loud the video my friends sent me is. the app doesn't not respect my volume settings or have a mute setting. and i have the silent mode turned on.

i have also noticed that many people have given up on trying to figure it out. and we are losing a basic courtesy such as keeping your devices quiet in public places. apps like tiktok could be the main culprit here.

blondin··on .gitignore that is not checked into repository
well, for you. but i find it easier to add new rules to ignore files rather than adding rules for not ignoring them. the extensive lists you see today all started small too. (well there are a few default lists now). they grew up a line at a time, the way yours is doing right now. it would also be easy to miss a file if you start with ignoring everything.
blondin··on Revert for jart’s llama.cpp MMAP miracles
i vote for someone like dang to handle these open-source drama episodes.

i have limited knowledge on what is being discussed but i echo the "ego-driven" comment below. because it's Sunday. and the replies are coming in so fast that it's certain, they are not giving enough thought to the other side's argument. and already talking about forking, not accepting collaborators, etc.

blondin··on Ryuichi Sakamoto has died
sad news. truly love listening to his work. RIP
blondin··on Why not tell people to “simply” use pyenv, poetry or anaconda
that was before go modules and now workspaces right?
blondin··on Court Reinstates Adnan Syed’s Murder Conviction and Orders New Hearing
wow, so this is setting a precedent?
blondin··on Fide Women’s Grand Prix Collapses into “Chaos” as Players Withdraw
great example of the versatility of the human mind.

i was about to pipe the entire article into ChatGPT. exactly like the other comment. but i realized it had screenshots of tweets and instagram posts. people do this in case the original authors changed their mind.

ChatGPT can't take images as input (afaik). for a human mind, the text in these screenshots are part of what the article is trying to say.

the medium is changing mid-article, but the story is the same. it could have been a video, a voice recording. a human mind would extract their content and incorporate it back into the main story the article is telling.

blondin··on Ask HN: Any group to learn xv6 together?
that's a great idea. fancy a meetup.com group? if you ever start one, let us know here on hn. going through a operating systems course together sounds fun.
blondin··on AsCode – Terraform Alternative Syntax
i wonder what advantages this has over using a language-based IaC solution like Pulumi[0]?

[0]: https://github.com/pulumi/pulumi

blondin··on GPTerminator – ChatGPT in the Terminal
awesome name! i would have personally stuck to terminator.
blondin··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
has anyone looked into the source of the peanut products? sounds like the US is dis-proportionately affected by these allergies.
blondin··on “Clean Code, Horrible Performance” Discussion
i find it baffling that uncle bob thinks it's okay for dialog boxes to be sluggish. and that we can throw CPUs and GPUs at most performance problems. because it's "cheap".

that way of thinking is part of the problem.

blondin··on “Clean Code, Horrible Performance” Discussion
it did add something of value.

uncle bob realized his "clean code" may have done a disservice with regards to performance. but i am not holding my breath on seeing a change come about soon.

it is possible to optimize for both performance and developer productivity. but everybody is leaving that out in the discussion.

blondin··on Yyvette's Bridal
yes. i have not seen this in a very long time! it is supposed to play the midi file. in fact, it works on the other pages. but when you have you html wrong, the midi will get downloaded instead. that's what is happening on the index page.
blondin··on Show HN: APIRank.dev – We crawled and ranked public APIs from the internet
would be nice if it explains why OpenAPI 3.0.0-compliance (with comments, examples, etc.) matters.
blondin··on Twitter is down due to buggy release?
oh wow! we have an answer to the question: where do you go when twitter is down?
blondin··on Float-Parsing Benchmark: Regular Visual Studio, ClangCL and Linux GCC
interesting! the builder is making the program slow?

would be interesting to see the benchmark result using cl commands directly.

blondin··on Northern Ontario woman hasn’t eaten in 2 years since Covid-19
was Angus Barbieri drinking? one thing i realized is that i can go many days without food. what truly gets to you is not drinking. i was on coffee most of the time.
blondin··on Unix Edition Zero (1971)
this is great. i realized that manuals and documentation might have used a lot of paper back then. the new PDF that was typeset using troff is half the length of the original!
blondin··on Dis This: Disassemble Python code online
by the way, compiler explorer[0] has python support.

[0]: https://godbolt.org/

blondin··on A lightweight (~5000 LOC) Python interpreter for game engines
impressive work! i suppose it implements a subset and not the full language? would be nice to see some benchmarks. everyone claims super fast nowadays. i have no doubt though, since it's cpp.
blondin··on Show HN: I turned my microeconomics textbook into a chatbot with GPT-3
your chatbot is subpar. i suggest you get a better chatbot.

mine:

To make your girlfriend happy, you could try the following:

Listen to her and understand her perspective

Show appreciation and affection regularly

Be supportive and considerate in your actions and words

Be open to compromise and finding a solution together

Make time for shared activities and experiences that bring you both joy

Take responsibility for your actions and apologize when necessary

Communicate openly and honestly with each other to maintain trust and intimacy.

Remember, every relationship is unique and what works for one couple may not work for another. The key is to have open and ongoing communication to understand each other's needs and work together to find what works for your relationship.

blondin··on Stop developing this technology
haven't paid much attention to the deepfake community. but this one is debatable. one of their linked forums has a section for flagging uncredited videos or work.

so, deepfake authors want credits for their work. that's perplexing.

what's more, this is happening while they seem to be ignoring the ethical concerns raised in the issue. citing that people can do whatever they want with the tech.

blondin··on Ask HN: Are ChatGPT answers getting worse for anyone else?
no changes noticed.

i am a bit skeptical about the claims made here. chatgpt, the free version, for me, is more or less the same. same slowness, same mistakes, which when pointed out, it corrects.

they made the answers shorter? did not notice. they fixed math/factual errors? yesterday, i pointed out an invalid range. i asked for a mapping between music dynamics symbols and midi velocities. the answer went beyond the midi 0-127 range. chatgpt corrected the range when i pointed it out.

no degradation for me whatsoever. same experience.

blondin··on Ask HN: Are browser bookmarks dead? What alternative(s) do you use?
what do you mean browsers haven't implemented a way to search through bookmarks? chrome was the reason i started tagging my bookmarks many years ago. the omnibar defaults to searching your own bookmarks first.

doing "github <reponame>" has been my way to go to a repo. or "twitter <personname>". i have many other tags: "shopping", "article", "unread", "read", "people". there is a deliberate effort to make my bookmarks searchable. i export my bookmarks once a month in the standard netscape html format. other browsers import that format fine.

CRTL/CMD+L drops you in the omnibar.

blondin··on Cosmic DE update: System76's new Linux desktop environment
> I’m waiting for (probably far off) day when System76 makes its own laptops instead of using Clevo hardware. I just can’t deal with that keyboard & trackpad quality.

oh, i never knew that! i thought they made everything.

for real though, who thought that having pgup and pgdn as mini keys on top of the left and right arrow keys was a good idea? and how did that get through quality assurance?

blondin··on Nationwide Ban on TikTok Inches Closer to Reality
well, most government have a social media presence. it seems easier to reach people that way. why wouldn't they allow these apps on employees devices, or at least some employees?
blondin··on Ask HN: How to Deal with ChatGPT Anxiety?
same as GP here. your argument does not make any sense to me.
