blondin··on Cron at Scale
interesting read. i have seen the contrary move being a success too. moving from sophisticated job scheduling systems that are too complex and less reliable to the simplicity and reliability of crontabs or systemd timers.
blondin··on Groqchat
signing up was a mistake. i am now condemned to use this in incognito.
blondin··on Posts, profiles, and user search are now available without login
thanks, used the first one.
blondin··on James Bennett: Raise the right exceptions
python is becoming a weird language. we introduced type checking so we don't have to do these mental gymnastics. and yet as the article suggests, there are still reasons to do them.
blondin··on Murder is a pixel art ECS game engine in C#
fully agree. this is a very tasteless name. i wouldn't even go as far as the easy to google argument with this.
blondin··on Jets: Ruby Serverless Framework
can't recall the last time i was on a project's page and everything just clicked. no fluff. kudos to the team!
blondin··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
i also had a hard time reading that piece about bad UX on my phone. i don't know about the desktop experience but you made a valid point.
blondin··on I Am Leaving Twitter by Anne Hidalgo (Mayor of Paris)
why not keep the original title instead of heavily editing it?
blondin··on Cybertruck buyers forbidden from selling for the first year
it is unclear how first sale doctrine applies here.
blondin··on YouTube is cracking down on consumers' favorite loophole
as a subscriber, i am also very disappointed by all the issues i am having recently with youtube. this must be due to all the cracking down they are doing. it is also affecting paying customers!
blondin··on Amazon acquires Fig
i never thought fig or warp would ever work. requiring an account and a subscription to use CLI tools sounds ludicrous. but they seem to have found a silver bullet with AWS since having an account is a requirement anyway.

good luck to them on what comes next.

blondin··on YouTube using antipattern to force people enable history
the hilarious thing is that this pattern is orthogonal to their "mini player" feature which is supposed to keep your video playing while you are browsing.

now you have a "mini player" on an almost blank page.

blondin··on YouTube using antipattern to force people enable history
indeed!

i only see subscriptions and videos i care about now. and through my subscriptions, i discover videos related to what i care about. they should do away with the home page all together for people who have watch history turned off.

best move ever!

blondin··on Qalculate – A multi-purpose cross-platform desktop calculator
i wonder why calculator apps are so popular
blondin··on Typograms: A definition and renderer for ASCII diagrams
how would you export something like this to an image? and also, would this work in github markdown?
blondin··on ImPlot: Interactive plotting library, ImGui style
these demo charts look very good! and it seems like ImGui makes animation and effects easy to integrate. styling and theming charts are always a pain.
blondin··on Twitter(now X) CEO Linda Yaccarino claims usage 'at all time high' in staff memo
anyone has specifics on how monetization works on twitter, sorry x? how many followers or views does one need to have?
blondin··on Ask HN: Dark UI Patterns in Gmail?
this is bad UI design. not a dark pattern.

nowadays, i smile away whenever a lazy loading UI gets in my way. and i end up tapping or clicking on it. i never go back to do what i was doing when i was rudely interrupted.

i have seen it everywhere.

blondin··on Ask HN: What is the most memorable game you played?
street of rage 2 on sega megadrive 2. best 16-bit beat'em up game ever made.
blondin··on Grav is a modern open-source flat-file CMS
the "get premium" sticky makes this website unusable for me. was curious to see how a flat-file CMS can make a come back.
blondin··on Commit Mono – Neutral programming typeface
the site is fine on both mobile and desktop. saying this as someone who has real accessibility issues everyday.

bookmarked. might give the font a try.

blondin··on YouTube: Sort by oldest is back baby
i see it too.

i have sent numerous feedback asking for a sort by length in playlists. that feature doesn't seem to align with their vision of good playlist management somehow.

blondin··on WingetUI – A better UI for package managers
i hope that fly-out menu with 432 packages has filtering capabilities. otherwise that's a big UX nightmare right there.
blondin··on Why split lexing and parsing into two separate phases?
two things about splitting into phases:

1. history (scanner, lexer, parser all would not fit on one tape/cassette/disk back then)

2. performance (each component can benefit from specialized optimization techniques without affecting the other)

blondin··on Beautiful branchless binary search
are you going to have a printed version of your book?
blondin··on Teaching Large Language Models to Self-Debug
color me skeptical. what are those large companies that are replacing devs with LLMs?
blondin··on Ask HN: Show Code with Notes Alongside
i have seen those in annotated javascript documentation. but it was the other way around. (comment on the left, and code on the right). they all seem to use docco[0] with the option to display comment in "parallel". the author of docco used it in their library underscore[1].

blondin··on Knit: Making a Better Make
ah, what a missed opportunity for calling this build system katana. or shuriken. it would have continued the analogy that started with ninja and samurai :)
blondin··on Inlining SVGs for Dark Mode
why do programmers prefer dark mode?

because light attracts bugs.

blondin··on I don't want streaming music, I just want to stream my music
not at all. same here.
