block_dagger··on Plasticlist Report – Data on plastic chemicals in Bay Area foods
I've been using a reverse osmosis water filter at home to reduce microplastics and other contaminants from my drinking and cooking water for the past few years. I am using the #1 recommended product on Buyer's Guide[1] for others who are interested.

block_dagger··on Why OpenAI's Structure Must Evolve to Advance Our Mission
I wonder: who will be our Serena Butler? [1]

block_dagger··on A Tongue-in-Cheek Look Back at Broderbund's 'The Print Shop'
The Print Shop is one of the first pieces of software I ever used. I was nine years old. My parents had bought me a used Apple IIe and dot matrix printer. Included were ~200 5.25" floppy disks containing random software, many of them games. I ended up using The Print Shop more than anything else (except Dig Dug). It was very user friendly. I still have vivid and fond memories of the printer whining away late at night, slowly spewing out my graphical creations. Many thanks to the developers!
block_dagger··on Ghostty 1.0
Nice work! How does this compare to Warp?
block_dagger··on Ocean Carbon Removal: Captura's marine carbon capture explained
I wrote a short story the other day about making the carbon problem obvious to every human on earth[1]. I’d love to read yours when you finish it. We need more fiction that focuses on this along with the nonfiction imo.

One of his best.

block_dagger··on Ruby 3.4.0
Try React on Rails [1]. I’ve found it to be a very pleasant development experience.

block_dagger··on T * sin (t)' ≈ Ornamented Christmas Tree (2013)
This is not a drill. It really is Christmas.
block_dagger··on The number pi has an evil twin
Every even number?
block_dagger··on Twtxt is a decentralised, minimalist microblogging service for hackers
Broken image and popup message that disappears after a few seconds on the home page. Yeah, no thanks.
block_dagger··on The end is nigh and here's why
I would laugh if I didn’t interpret this as a disturbing dearth of evidence-based critical thinking. Homo Sapiens has immense power over the world and other species and very little rationality to temper and guide that power.
block_dagger··on Design Token-Based UI Architecture
“Tokens” makes me think of crypto/blockchain. Suboptimal naming.
block_dagger··on After 3 Years, I Failed. Here's All My Startup's Code
It takes a strong will to admit so publicly that you failed and to release unpolished code. I’m sure many will benefit from your efforts. Bravo.

block_dagger··on Getting to 2M users as a one woman dev team [video]
I think a lot of devs prefer the hover-to-blame feature in their IDE vs searching through history on GitHub.
block_dagger··on Getting to 2M users as a one woman dev team [video]
One of the most rewarding aspects of my previous career at a company spanning from a startup to an IPO and beyond was deleting bad code and replacing it in a massive Rails app that was touched by hundreds of devs in a high churn environment. I also took on fixing massive schema inefficiencies that had a lot of risk of breaking nearly every other team's flow. It took a lot of careful work and communication across multi-year goals that I managed, mostly alone. I was allowed to do this by a few early folks who believed I was doing a good service for the company in the long run but kept hinting it was a bad career choice for me personally. I believe I was eventually let go for making these massive improvements instead of adding that green button that the new Product guy wanted. No regrets.
block_dagger··on Always go to the funeral (2005)
I declined to attend one of my grandfathers’ funerals. I did not consider him a good man and did not feel love for him while he was alive. I have never regretted it.
block_dagger··on Plotting Prime Numbers (2021)
I’m not a mathematician so correct me if I’m wrong, but the patterns that emerge or more the natural result of the plotting method vs revealing anything meaningful about the distribution of primes.
block_dagger··on OpenERV
I live near a ten lane highway. I prefer to keep the outdoor air out, and the indoor air filtered. I could see this being very useful for other dwellings though.
block_dagger··on Implementing a simple object system from scratch in Ruby
Interesting. Why the inconsistent use of hash rockets?
block_dagger··on Show HN: A simple web game to help learn chords and basic progressions
Neat project. I’ve been using SimplyPiano on iPad for about a year and it’s great for learning sight reading, scales, and chords. I recommend it for anyone seeking to improve their piano skills as well as devs building similar apps.
block_dagger··on The tooth, the whole tooth and the jawbone too
Bravo on the title.
block_dagger··on Mastering Ruby Debugging: From Puts to Professional Tools
binding.irb all day
block_dagger··on A letter to open-source maintainers
I think if someone invests the time to learn and use (depend on) an OSS, they feel like they paid for it. Not only that, but they chose it over a competitor, thereby propping up the OSS author. Therefore, irrational or not, they feel entitled.
block_dagger··on Dear OAuth Providers
Good call. I had not considered the OAuth provider acting nefariously.
block_dagger··on Dear OAuth Providers
I wish OAuth said something about what to do when someone signs up with email/pass and then logs in using the same email via OAuth later. I get that this is outside the scope of the spec but it would be helpful if there were a standard around this. My opinion: merge the accounts and allow the user to login either way.
block_dagger··on Django and Postgres for the Busy Rails Developer
The basics are trivial to learn but the object model and lambda style programming as well as metaprogramming (method_missing, etc) can be overwhelming for some folks to pick up quickly. I absolutely love Ruby though.
block_dagger··on Django and Postgres for the Busy Rails Developer
I think Rails would be better off with TOML vs YML but otherwise I think Rails is better. Disclaimer: I’ve built dozens of Rails apps but never a full Django app. I dislike significant whitespace.
block_dagger··on Chatbot hinted a kid should kill his parents over screen time limits: lawsuit
And what happens to Hamlet and MacBeth in these self-labeled tragedies? I think this comparison is far from apt.
