blobster··on 50% – 75% of cases of Covid-19 are asymptomatic
It's likely that we'll have a vaccine or at least some kind of treatment by the end of the year, so this should improve the prospects quite a bit.
blobster··on Risky Business: Interview with Marc Andreessen (2018)
What Austrians fail to grasp is that human behavior is quite predictable at the population level, or for large groups in general. This is the entire basis of game theory, marketing, sociology, etc. Unsurprisingly, Austrians refuse to acknowledge that economics is subject to science and do not recognize entire fields such as statistics.

It's true that the actions of single individuals cannot be fully predicted, but that's not necessary. Any level of insight is enough to form the basis of a scientific theory. In other words, mainstream economists do not claim that they can perfectly model human behavior, but they do (rightly) claim that they can make educated guesses which are correct more often than not.

blobster··on Show HN: TLDR This – Auto summarize any article or webpage in a click
Nice landing page. If you Google "summarizer", you will find dozens of similar services for free. The mechanism behind it is very simple. A couple a years ago I built one from scratch in about 2 hours, then I accidentally deleted it and rewrote it in 15 minutes. Here's how most of them work:

1. Split the text into words

2. Rank each word based on how many times it appears in the text. For example, a word that appears 10 times gets 10 points, and so on.

3. Rank sentences based on the sum of the scores of each word inside them.

4. Return the top N sentences by score (N is up to the user), in the order in which they appear in the text.

For extra fancyness, exclude the most common articles and prepositions and give 2 points to proper nouns.

Works surprisingly well.

Despite what most people assume, it's mostly rich people eating wild animals, so OP has a point. https://www.npr.org/2020/01/22/798644707/why-wet-markets-per...

Shorts are really good for...well, short-term betting. Sustaining a short position even just medium-term, is extremely expensive.

blobster··on Netflix claims Fortnite is now a bigger competitor than HBO
I agree, but I think this doesn't apply to innovation. When is comes to innovation, people always want faster horses.
blobster··on Netflix claims Fortnite is now a bigger competitor than HBO
Wow, is that a thing? Reminds me of an episode from Black Mirror.
blobster··on Netflix claims Fortnite is now a bigger competitor than HBO
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think the secret behind this kind of success is just properly designing experiments. Again, if this were true, the best founders would be data scientists. But they're not. They are visionaries. So I reckon it must be the vision.
blobster··on Netflix claims Fortnite is now a bigger competitor than HBO
Maybe, but I'm talking about getting to that level in the first place.

I always wondered how some companies can rely exclusively on data like A/B testing to make decisions. Isn't that incredibly slow? In my experience there are thousands of decisions to make every year in a high growth company and there is just not enough time to test everything. This is why the best software companies that we are all familiar with revolve around an individual with incredible intuition/vision. If it was possible/practical to just rely on a bunch of A/B tests, every company would be successful.
