bloat··on It's probably time to stop recommending Clean Code (2020)
There's whole pages of explanation about understandability in the Meaningful Names chapter preceding that distilled rule. Specifically it explains about making meaningful distinctions by avoiding vague words like Data or Manager or Info.
bloat··on Tiny radioactive capsule lost in Australian outback found

bloat··on An unexpected benefit of unit tests
If you're doing TDD then yes, you're writing the tests first. But even Kent Beck says you don't need to do TDD all the time. So where's the dogmatism?
bloat··on Ask HN: What are some of your “buy it for life” purchases?
I also still have my mum's 7" collection from the sixties.
bloat··on Ask HN: What are some of your “buy it for life” purchases?
Vinyl records. I still have records that are perfectly good which I bought when I first got a record player for my 15th (I think) birthday, 35 years ago now.
bloat··on How prestige outlets get away with copypasta
This author sets up a lot of his own personal standards for scientific reporting, and then calls outlets "dishonest" for failing to meet them.

Its fair enough if he doesn't like their reporting, but pretending that they are deliberately and dishonestly subverting standards that he alone has invented is nonsense.

bloat··on Ask HN: Why do I struggle to follow corporate meetings?
You're lucky he was referred to as Robert Smith. In my company they'd just have said 'Robert', and I wouldn't even be able to look him up in the directory to find out what the hell his job is.
bloat··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
This is interesting. Is the internet completely cut off? Do they have internal libraries of documentation for third party stuff they are using (paper? digital?) Do you have any example institutions, or what domain they are working in? Thanks.
bloat··on Shimano Forces Hammerhead to Remove All Di2 Related Functionality From Karoo
Well, it should really read "Now some, expensive bicycle drivetrains are...". But I guess it'll trickle down to more run-of-the mill stuff eventually.
bloat··on The hollow universe of modern physics
I think some people would be inclined to say that physics can tell you something about the actual nature of reality, rather than being a bunch of maths that corresponds to a greater or lesser degree to observed experience.

There's a difference between saying that for example "quarks exist", and "we don't know what the hell is going on inside a proton, but these quark things we made up seem to match the observations".

bloat··on Double ridge formation over shallow water sills on Jupiter’s moon Europa
ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS — EXCEPT EUROPA ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
bloat··on I hate Spring (2014)
We have a good time with it in our work. We don't use everything it has to offer, but we do use dependency injection, Spring MVC and JMS. We write testable classes, we new them up in @Bean methods and group them together in @Configuration classes. Everything is modular - you want to use our in-process message bus? Just @Import the configuration class. You want to include Jetty and use MVC? Just @Import the configuration class, you can set a couple of properties and authentication is enabled using our in house SSO.

I think modern Spring lends itself very well to making services this way, if you can make the effort to make your application components modular, you can reuse the common stuff and have it interface nicely with the service specific code.

bloat··on My Org Roam Notes Workflow (2021)
The database in org-roam is a cache for performance. It can be removed at any time and it will be rebuilt from the metadata contained in the files.
bloat··on Gravity Hill
With regards to the last sentence there, in my experience cycling a "false flat" is simply a very gradual uphill that saps your energy slowly. Not really an optical illusion in the same sense as these gravity hills.
bloat··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
Please define the use of the term 'grinding leetcode'.

Is it:

a) Having a good score on the actual leetcode website as a prerequisite for an offer/interview.

b) Using the actual leetcode website to practice for a technical interview?

c) Practicing some other way using leetcode style data structure and alogrithm problems. e.g. working on the Cracking The Coding Interview book.

Personally I've never seen any recruiter or interviewer mention leetcode by name. But I've certainly been asked to practice leetcode style problems.

bloat··on Why TV Lost (2009)
When did TV lose? In the UK the most popular show on a non-traditional channel is in tenth place behind BBC and ITV shows.

bloat··on Sci-Fi Icon Neal Stephenson Finally Takes on Global Warming
See also the use of the word "now", which seems to imply "Oh God, after everything else, what are they up to now?" as in (from the Daily Mail) "Now police blame victims for being burgled!"
bloat··on Low-Background Steel
I came across this because I read an article about people looting old shipwrecks for the steel.

bloat··on Squirrel stores thousands of nuts inside man's parked truck
I had a box of bird seed on a shelf in my garage, next to a box of nails. One day I go in, and see that all the nails are in a layer in the bird seed box, covering up the seed. I can only assume a squirrel did this.
bloat··on Shenandoah in OpenJDK 17: Sub-millisecond GC pauses
You don't see any benefits to garbage collection at all? Would you even prefer to do your own memory management if you had a magic GC which never paused? I'd be interested in your reasoning if so.
bloat··on Large Unix programs were historically not all that portable between Unixes
I remember this too. First year of university in 1991, me and my friends who'd all gone to different places used to write actual letters on paper and post them to each other. I was on the internet for the first time, and was excited to be able to download pictures! I could print them out and include them in the letters. If I remember correctly I needed to compile some kind of image viewer/manipulator on my account on the DEC Mips machine we CS students had access to. Anyway, as you say it was amazing watching the autoconf script feeling its way around and discovering its environment.
bloat··on UK High School top grades reach record high – with 44.8% getting A+ or A grades
There was no level playing field between schools and students this year due to different students missing different amounts of school, having different capabilities to learn at home, and many other covid related factors. It does not seem fair to me that they should all sit the same exam as if they had all had similar normal schooling for the past two years.

I'm not saying I agree with the mitigations that were put in place this year and last year, but I certainly think normal exams would not have been good for students. Ideally we want people to fill the universities, the aim is not to maximize the number of people rejected.

bloat··on Pfeilstorch
Just a great demonstration of how much knowledge we used to not have, how much we still have to obtain, and the weird ways we'll get it!
bloat··on Barry Diller: The movie business as before is finished and will never come back
From what I've seen released from 2020 onwards I've particularly liked:

Black Bear, Possessor, Palm Springs, Love And Monsters, Psycho Goreman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, White Tiger, Moxie, The Mitchells Vs The Machines

Going back a bit further:

Saint Maud, Color Out Of Space, Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, Crawl, The Personal History Of David Copperfield

bloat··on Barry Diller: The movie business as before is finished and will never come back
I use Letterboxd. Its pretty easy to get started, look up a bunch of movies you know you like, read some of the reviews, follow some people who seem like they know movies and would be into interesting stuff, and then see what comes your way.
bloat··on Herdwicks: The 'smiley' sheep that shaped the Lake District
Well, I guess 'terraforming' is an overstatement, but hill farming in general and the sheep specifically have had a profound effect on the landscape. This link is to a polemic, but it also contains plenty of references. https://www.monbiot.com/2013/05/30/sheepwrecked/
bloat··on Teeing, a hidden gem in the Java API
True, sometimes imperative loops are easier than streams. But your code is not a suitable substitute in this case where the constraints are clear. He does want the total sum, and he does want the list, and he does only want to iterate once.
bloat··on New proof reveals that graphs with no pentagons are fundamentally different
I would describe it as follows, maybe a little easier to visualize. Draw six dots, draw either a red or a blue line from every dot to every other dot. You must draw either a completely red triangle or a completely blue triangle. Personally I don't think it sounds intuitive when stated like that!
