what is your startup working on?
blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2019)
Oncue | oncue.co | Mid-level/Senior Software Engineer | On-site, full-time | Oakland, CA

Our mission is to bring trust, transparency, and ease to one of life's most stressful experiences - moving. We're helping drive a better consumer experience and our SaaS product helps these companies run their business. The problems we solve for this industry are the same faced by many service businesses, so the opportunity is big.

Just this past year, more than 11,000 moves were booked and managed through our platform. We have paying customers and are rapidly adding new!

Our stack is Rails, React, React Native, and Postgres.

What you'll get at Oncue:

- The opportunity to join a small but highly nimble engineering team.

- A competitive salary and meaningful equity in a company that is rapidly signing up paying customers.

- Work with experienced Sales and Product leaders at an early stage startup that has a proven business model.

- A diverse and inclusive team. 60% of our leadership team is female. We also strongly believe in promoting internally to leadership roles.

Some core values and benefits:

- As an engineer, you will be working on projects that not only impact small businesses but also end consumers like yourself. You will be building not just to help businesses grow but also materially impact consumer experience.

- We provide a high degree of autonomy and ownership over projects. This is not just lip service. We are there to help each other, but trust in your drive and initiative to take projects to successful completion.

- All of us work from home on Fridays!

If this sounds interesting, reach out to me at vineet[at]oncue dot co

blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Finding tech talent is getting harder. It's not a Bay Area problem only
I do that as well and that still doesn't tell you much. It's a good first screen filter but isn't always sufficient. For senior candidates though, I agree that a homework assignment is not the best qualification process.
blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Finding tech talent is getting harder. It's not a Bay Area problem only
Haha thank you for not directing that at me.

Hiring and having a welcoming but selective process is rough :)

blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Finding tech talent is getting harder. It's not a Bay Area problem only
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the right process. We want to make it easy for the candidate too. Care to share your feedback/opinions?
blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Finding tech talent is getting harder. It's not a Bay Area problem only
Judge if they can code in our core stack? Well, if they're working with it in their current job, or in side projects. Assessing if they are good, we can do it in the on-site. Like I said, our on-site is based on knowing our stack, so we have to make sure they can work with it before we bring them in.
blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Finding tech talent is getting harder. It's not a Bay Area problem only
We're in a similar boat. Attracting good engineers as a seed stage company is challenging. What has worked for you?
blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Finding tech talent is getting harder. It's not a Bay Area problem only
I'd like to talk more about (1). We do a homework assignment that in fact does takes a few hours, but only for candidates who don't have experience developing in our core stack. If you can code in the languages and frameworks we use, it's a step we bypass. It tells us if they can solve a problem well using the tools and setup of their choice. If we clearly see they did well at this, the on-site can then focus on the more non-coding aspect.

Our on-site interviews are highly contextual and rooted in the real-world where candidates work directly in our codebase. They are reasonable in the things we ask candidates to do (re-factor something, review PRs, implement a small enhancement).

If someone can't code in one of our core languages, it's a tougher assessment since we would have to resort to hypothetical/whiteboard crap (which we hate). How do you assess someone then? We recently had a candidate do a take-home where they didn't do well, and it did save 5-6h of everyone's time and their effort of coming in and being subject to the pressure of the interview.

I'd love to hear counter-opinions on this.

blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Which companies are improving recruiting?
For the past few years, I've mostly been on the employer side of this, recruiting engineers in my teams with a brief period where I had to find a job. It plain sucks.

As the hiring manager, I wish I didn't have to deal with recruiters and their 20% fee. But sourcing candidates and reaching out to them is painful too. OTOH there is too much noise in applications that come through your job board/career page links. Using any of these platforms is a full-time job in itself. Sifting through dozens of profiles and reaching out individually is extremely time consuming.

As someone who had to look for a job, that sucked too. You either go to a recruiter who forces you into a bunch of interviews, or you apply cold.

Referrals definitely make it easier on both sides but you can't always rely on just that one channel.

What can materially improve the discovery process, on both the hired and hiring sides? I think about this often. How can talent find roles suited to it and vice versa? Wasn't technology going to make this a breeze?

Oncue | oncue.co | Senior Software Engineer | On-site, full-time | Oakland, CA

We're an Oakland-based startup with a mission to bring trust, transparency, and ease to one of life's most stressful experiences - moving. Much of this industry still runs on pen and paper. We're changing that, and in the process, building a superior consumer-side experience as well.

We're growing fast. Just this past year, more than 11,000 moves across more than a dozen states were managed through our platform. To keep up with demand for our service, we'd like to bring a Senior Engineer on who can help us take the product to the next level.

YOUR ROLE: As an experienced engineer on the team, you get to establish the practices and systems that foster a strong, high-performing engineering team. You're ideally someone who is very hands-on and enjoys rapidly iterating and shipping high-quality software. You'll guide the team towards the right technical decisions.

WHAT WORKING AT ONCUE IS LIKE: As a company, we're committed to helping you grow. We believe in promoting internally and have done so on multiple occasions. You'll work with experienced Sales and Product leaders at an early stage startup that has a proven business model. We're also proud of the fact that 60% of our leadership team is female.

OUR STACK: Rails, React, React Native, Postgres.

INTERVIEW PROCESS: A bit about our interview process for senior engineers, which I think is different from many others, and a lot more real! See https://twitter.com/vinthanedar/status/991149057555906560

APPLY: I'm one of the co-founders. Reach out to me at vineet[at]oncue dot co if you're interested.

I recently wrote a piece about the things we have done right shipping product: https://medium.com/@vinthanedar/teams-that-ship-de7b909bb8d6 - your experience may resonate with it.

blizkreeg··on YC 120
Perhaps a better messaging here would be - if you're working on gene editing, nuclear fusion, or some such radical and ambitious project, we want to hear. Tell us the path you took to get to this point, and your ideas for the future. Then select from everyone who writes in?

blizkreeg··on The Resistance Is Real – Why Side Projects Are So Hard
Don’t mean to be mean (i’ve been there) but this is the money line “Re-written the code base 4 times (Laravel, Vanilla JS, React, then back to Vanilla JS).”

Is the goal to ship or play? If latter, no harm done, else that’s your resistance, nothing else.

blizkreeg··on Krisp.ai – Mute background noise during your calls
I've been waiting for something like this, except now I want it to be embedded in my bluetooth earphones. They all suck at removing background noise when I'm speaking on a call. Will this work well even if I'm speaking into my airpods?
blizkreeg··on How to Keep Your Job as Your Company Grows
Totally get what you're saying.

Where are you based out of? Would love to get coffee nonetheless if you're in the bay area. In the least, it appears we have some interesting stories to swap.

blizkreeg··on How to Keep Your Job as Your Company Grows
Did you speak your mind? It might be in your best interest to voice what you're sensing/feeling.

OTOH, are you looking for something new with the same excitement as the early stages but with product market fit and growing? I'd love to speak :)

blizkreeg··on Ask HN: Why do managers get paid more than individual contributors?
Here's a simple rule for you to know. As you rise in your career and the ladder, you get paid (more) for results, not actions or efforts.

Managers and leaders get paid more for that singular reason. Shepherding a team to achieve a desired result is harder than it seems.

Of course there are bad managers...

blizkreeg··on Lessons we learned while bootstrapping
where do people go to get those graphics/illustrations created? they all look in the same style.
blizkreeg··on American Equity
I'm not saying startups are a panacea. I'm just saying that perhaps there's one more way for others to benefit from the wealth that startups are generating. This is just one among many possible ways and means.
blizkreeg··on American Equity
Certainly. But there is also an order of magnitude gain available (in theory, at least) if you can get in on an early round.
blizkreeg··on American Equity
ICOs still feel like the wild west. They feel way more riskier than contributing to a "validated" funding round. That said, VC rounds obviously are no guarantee of good judgement either.
blizkreeg··on American Equity
I have a better (may be slightly insane) idea. Open up startup investing (VC rounds especially) to a wider audience through some kind of index fund. Retirement and pension funds, endowments etc are too roundabout a way of actually benefitting from the windfall in the now.

While this is obviously risky, in the 2/10 chance where the startup IPOs or gets acquired, everyone stands to benefit a big deal.

I recently heard about the case of a private school which was able to invest $15K in one of $SNAP's funding rounds (the VC partner was a parent at the school). At IPO, the school netted $50M on this investment. This school was already well off but I can imagine what this would do for a lot of public schools if this option were available to them.

blizkreeg··on Startup Ideas
What if it was fire retardant instead? I haven't thought it through, but probably more effective and easier mechanism of delivery than water?
