Better start printing thousands of T-shirts saying JOURNALIST.
blickentwapft··on Y Combinator has lost its soul: A YC founder's perspective
Isn’t YC just a numbers game?

Back enough companies and hopefully some will be winners.

blickentwapft··on Volcanoes on Venus are still active
I saw a fascinating documentary that said the entire surface of Venus is only about 500 million years old. Which implies that the entire surface was molten at the same time and has only recently cooled. 500 million years being “recent”.
blickentwapft··on I Don't Want to Be a Founder
You don’t need a cofounder.

You don’t need a VC/funding.

You don’t need to over identify self with business.

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: What do you do to keep your mind from going into negative thoughts?
Antidepressants.
blickentwapft··on Confidential VMs
I kind of assumed all my cloud computing resources were already private and confidential.

Not so?

blickentwapft··on IBM looking for 12 years’ experience in Kubernetes administration
Meh. It’s probably just 2 years mistyped.

Shouldn’t be on front page HN.

blickentwapft··on Commander X16 8 bit computer now has its own website
Oh ok that’s encouraging.

It does use an fpga for graphics. That’s kinda surprising I would have thought there’d be a suitable graphics chip off the shelf.

blickentwapft··on Commander X16 8 bit computer now has its own website
Retro machines always feel less authentic to me when they use an fpga for the CPU instead of an actual retro CPU or descendant of.

Just opinion of course. Retro is whatever it means to you.

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: How do you learn new libraries without much documentation?
Just read the libraries source code, examine the methods and see what they doZ
blickentwapft··on Healthy Self-Doubt
It’s strange.

In the tech industry, whenever you express any self doubt, people read that as you saying you have impostor syndrome.

Why is that?

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: How can I quickly trim my AWS bill?
Run your own machines.

You don’t have to use cloud services.

blickentwapft··on Ask HN: What software ideas do you wish others would implement?
Build tools that work
blickentwapft··on The saddest “Just Ship It” story
I just saw, after over 18 months of off and on development, that some other company has exactly implemented my idea, minus one key feature. They did a really great comprehensive job.

After wailing and licking my wounds for a day I decided that just because they’ve done that doesn’t mean the game is over. I actually decided it was an advantage because I could just copy their approach to solving certain thorny UI challenges.

Also, it’s validation for my idea. Until I saw that I thought maybe the idea was just a pipe dream.

It’s dumb to drop a project just cause someone else did it.

Maybe programmers tend to give up when they see someone else did it because programmers think the code is the business or the code is the win or the code is the success or something, when in fact success is much more than the code.

blickentwapft··on I got 400 signups with a video of a product that didn’t exist
Silicon Valley normalises these sort of lies as ethical.

It’s not lying, it’s “hustle”.

There’s ways to present that aren’t outright deceptive.

It’s a strange blog post because it’s not an admission to be proud of.

blickentwapft··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
Intolerance for long form writing is relatively new and an outcome of the Internet shortening attention spans.

I used to do some long form writing and I still remember feeling offended when I first got “too long didn’t read” comments.

blickentwapft··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
If you are a developer, what is the last significant thing you learned, and when did you learn it?
blickentwapft··on What is the core of the Python programming language?
MicroPython seems to have done a fairly good job of deciding what’s important in a python subset.
blickentwapft··on Do the Real Thing
This really hit the mark.
blickentwapft··on The first first-person shooter (2015)
Dave Lebling invented the first person shooter? The irony is beyond belief.

For those who don’t know Dave was a key player in Infocom text adventures, the antithesis of graphic games.

blickentwapft··on Show HN: Automatically Rename HEY's 'Imbox' to 'Inbox'
Email is an exceedingly hard thing to change.

Nothing much succeeds in actually changing the way it works.

What does work is developing communication systems unrelated to email ie slack.

My prediction is that Hey will fail but will pivot into something else which the developers will take as a victory.

True
blickentwapft··on Apple rejects Hey for second time, threatens removal from App Store
DHH has literally articulated this as a marketing strategy in the past.
blickentwapft··on Apple rejects Hey for second time, threatens removal from App Store
Feels like DHH manufacturing controversy.

Deliberately break rules so Apple rejects their code.

So it’s a marketing stunt designed to get a product into the front page of Hacker News.

But that would never happen of course... HEY!!

Do you really think DHH is surprised by the commission rules at Apple? Do you really think said bugs aren’t deliberate?

DHH is playing everyone folks. But he certainly has an army of fanboys here who downvote all the threads suggesting this is a marketing stunt.

Fake news in the truest sense.

blickentwapft··on TwilioQuest – A RPG game to help learn JavaScript
I think this sort of thing is the outcome of “engineer stockpiling” where companies insatiably hire engineers beyond what they need.

The company becomes a “a collector of fine engineers” like a gallery or museum or stable. And since such engineers get bored working on logging systems or whatever they do something more fun.

blickentwapft··on The American Press Is Destroying Itself
I’m getting to the point of just switching off.

Whatever your opinion, there will be many others who deeply and vehemently disagree with you and do so with passionate, fiery, certain-to-be-correct righteous indignation.

Carry your true opinions in your head and share them with no one.

blickentwapft··on A one-year moratorium on police use of Rekognition
The cynic might say “because in a year this will all have blown over and we can get back to selling”.
blickentwapft··on With only free software, a Mali G31 chip can now run GNOME
Could open source graphics drivers become a better option than proprietary?
blickentwapft··on Ideas That Changed My Life
>>> Robustness Principle: Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others. It’s a design guideline for software and a good rule for life:

My understanding is this is flat out wrong and bad for software development. Design software that is rigid in both what it accepts and sends. Loose standards lead to incompatiblities and chaos. Tightly define. This is not to say that your design should be inflexible, but for example a specification for data interchange should not accommodate loosely or incorrectly structured data.
