blenderdt··on Why isn’t new technology making us more productive?
For me the navigation example is a bad one because I still navigate like 30 years ago. I also don't have internet on my phone other than Wi-Fi. I don't want to be connected all the time.

What I see is that people have no clue anymore about where they are. They rely on GPS. Is this an improvement? As long as GPS is working, yes.

blenderdt··on Constraint-based geometry (CAD) sketcher for Blender
Lately I have been experimenting with geometry nodes as a kind of CAD modeling. You can create inputs (for example thickness) as constraint. This works but is a lot of work. So this plugin looks very helpfull.

But in the end Blender is mesh based. So for round models you need a lot of vertices or else it will be inaccurate (subdivision modeling doesn't make it more accurate, it does only make it smoother).

blenderdt··on Current guidelines for sun exposure are unhealthy and unscientific – research (2019)
According to this page we had skin cancer for thousands of years: https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(15)00240-6/fulltext

We also completely changed our way of life. We don't live outside anymore so we have less pigment that protects us from UV.

blenderdt··on Listening to songs can cause a physiological response known as “frisson”
After working with and without music for over 20 years I think working without music makes me more productive, working with music is more pleasant.
blenderdt··on First Look At The CSS object-view-box Property
Some CMSs (ProcessWire) have an option to set a focus point on an image. This is very useful for responsive designs where images are cropped. With a focus point you can keep the important part of the image in view.

So a pro tip for all CMS developers: make it possible for the user (or automate it with AI) to mark the important point of an image so it can be used in the object-view-box property.

blenderdt··on Listening to songs can cause a physiological response known as “frisson”
I found the explanation of the article very weak.

In my own experience it is caused by an 'overload' of emotions. When I had a burnout the same thing happened, but much faster. After reading into it I came to the conclusion that it must be a disorder in hormones.

So after reading this article I wonder if a frisson is in fact an 'overload' of hormones caused by a huge amount of emotions. And that this causes a mismatch between your emotions and what you are feeling.

blenderdt··on Tinnitus Seems Linked with Sleep
This is just experience over the years. I started to notice what caused it.
blenderdt··on Tinnitus Seems Linked with Sleep
Unfortunately I have 3 types of tinnitus: caused by hearing loss, caused by neck muscles, caused by too much stimulus (stress, a long drive, too much caffeine, and so on).

Hearing loss can not be healed but the other two types always go away after good sleep.

If you got tinnitus it is good to figure out if there is a cause that can be taken away. Sometimes you are in luck and a good deep sleep can improve things.

blenderdt··on World’s largest vertical strawberry farm opens in Jersey City
An acre is ~4000m². For tomatoes and peppers 200W/m² is possible.

Still 800kW, but a lot less than you are saying.

blenderdt··on How to Paint a Crosswalk
Also in most countries paint is just a visual sign not a legal one. The signs before a crosswalk are the legal ones. The paint will not be visible in rain or snow for example.
blenderdt··on Moderna’s HIV Vaccine Prepped for Trials in Africa
It depends. If almost every country in Europe had high levels of infection why wouldn't they use Europe?

I read the title about Africa as a positive announcement for the whole continent.

blenderdt··on Moderna’s HIV Vaccine Prepped for Trials in Africa
It would also fit the context, but 'Africa' does also.
blenderdt··on Moderna’s HIV Vaccine Prepped for Trials in Africa
Well I think this is really your own bias. The article quickly states that it is being rolled out in 2 African countries.

It also fits the context. Countries with the most cases are Russia and almost all countries in Africa (except for the North). So Africa as a continent is in need of a HIV cure.

blenderdt··on Gimp 3 Beta Released
I want to like Gimp but I just can't. It always gets in my way.

If I create a selection, then copy and paste, why isn't the result a new layer? Why is it something floating? I don't get that.

And why do all tool settings suddenly change when I start using my Wacom instead of my mouse?

Of course there are probably good answers for the above but it is just not intuitive.

It's a little sad because so much time and energy is put into Gimp. But every time I use it I start looking for alternatives. Krita for example.

I have been a Blender user for over 15 years. While the UI had a learning curve it always made sense to me. With Gimp this is not the case. I sometimes wonder if the people who built it also use it.

blenderdt··on Picasso's self portrait evolution from age 15 to age 90
Vincent van Gogh is such an artist. When he lived not a lot of people thought he was good. Only much later people noticed he was ahead of his time.

But I also think you sometimes need to learn how to look at art.

For example Piet Mondriaan is a like Picasso. They both slowly transformed into the abstract. In the end Mondriaan only created lines and colors. So it is easy to think that anyone could create such a painting. But a trained eye can see that there is balance in Mondriaan's work.

But in the end it's all about taste. Personally I don't like Van Gogh's work very much.

blenderdt··on Ask HN: How to break anxiety/fear-avoidance cycle?
Maybe not the most popular person, but I think Jordan Peterson has some really nice lectures and talks about this subject in YouTube. Also about fear.

Insickness in this thread also pointed this out: start with the smallest step.

And when it comes to fear: become braver. What helped me a lot was to accept fear.

blenderdt··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
For people who struggle: a first step is to turn off all notifications.

This doesn't work in the beginning but I noticed that over time this is giving more and more rest and makes you rething social media usage.

blenderdt··on Wp-SQLite: WordPress running on an SQLite database
Wait, rather small as in GB!?

I don't know much about WordPress but I wouldn't expect a simple website's DB to be more than a few MB.

blenderdt··on Tesla FSD Beta almost causes a head-on collision [video]
I don't understand why the display in Teslas are always so jumpy/glitchy.

For example the road. Sometimes parts of the road turn on and off. Or cars and pedestrians jumping all over the place.

Doesn't Tesla do some kind of estimation where objects will be next?

blenderdt··on Nearly 20% of active Twitter accounts likely to be fake or spam
The real question is: does it matter?
blenderdt··on Sleep helps process emotions
EMDR has nothing to do with REM or eye movement (alone).

The idea is that you think about a very emotional event. While you think about this you will get little tasks (for example to move your eyes). Because your brain is now busy with the tasks it also resets the extreme emotional reaction of the event you were thinking about.

blenderdt··on The Modos Paper Laptop
An alternative is an E-ink monitor.

Recently Onyx released a 25" version. But it is expensive, around $1700

blenderdt··on Sound Blaster (DOS)
The experience of the too real 'blood splash' sound in Prinse of Persia. I was shocked after buying a sound card.
blenderdt··on Spreading rock dust on farms as a climate solution
From the paper:

"...which involves modifying soils with crushed silicate rocks, such as basalt."

blenderdt··on Spreading rock dust on farms as a climate solution
What about silicosis?

Rock dust doesn't sound very healthy. People and animals next to the farm will breathe it when the weather is dry.

blenderdt··on Edge Lane Roads a.k.a. Advisory Bike Lanes
I don't know the rules in the US but in the Netherlands the car is always at fault in case of an accident, unless it is proven the cyclist was at fault.

This makes the roads a lot safer for cyclists.

When this law was introduced years ago the Dutch also made fun of it: https://youtu.be/ivY06w83fKU

blenderdt··on Why do those with higher IQs live longer? A new study points to answers
Exactly. Only IQ seems a little short sighted to me.
blenderdt··on Is It Safe to Ship Thousands of Electric Cars on Big Ships?
If the battery catches fire they are very hard to out out.

But you are right that it's maybe harder to set the battery on fire in the first place.

blenderdt··on Why do those with higher IQs live longer? A new study points to answers
In the Netherlands (where I live) 80% of the people above the age of 100 live in the part called Zeeland. This part is next to the sea with good air quality.

Japan and Italy are the countries with the oldest people. Both countries are surrounded by sea.

Maybe my IQ is not that high but this study of 1000 people looks off to me.

blenderdt··on Is It Safe to Ship Thousands of Electric Cars on Big Ships?
This article is not about if EVs are safe. It's about the fact that putting out a fire when batteries are involved is hard.

Every week there is a fire on a cargo ship. Most are not caused by the cargo. But when the cargo catches fire you want to be able to put it out before the whole ships turns into scrap.
