blairbeckwith··on LSD Microdosing
The Reply All podcast had a pretty interesting episode on this recently: https://gimletmedia.com/episode/44-shine-on-you-crazy-goldma...
blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: Outside of HN and Reddit what discussion communities are you a part of?
A hard-to-escape useless page, too. Don't break my back button, please.
blairbeckwith··on Minecraft creator Notch shares the darker side of life after a big exit
Oh, thank god Louis CK has covered this. Case closed, then.
blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: What does the percentage next to posts mean?
And, they're gone.
blairbeckwith··on Google Makani – Wind Energy Kites
Completely breaks swipe-back gesture in Chrome on a Mac. In a really weird way. Left and right swiping takes you up and down the page. Really awkward.
blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: Is it worth it working on big ideas that will probably never succeed?
Some people might tell you it's the only thing that is worth it. I'm paraphrasing here, but Fred Wilson just today said that the way to succeed is to work on things that nobody else things will succeed, and succeed.
blairbeckwith··on Soylent’s Next Chapter
> First and foremost, we will be significantly expanding our manufacturing and shipping capabilities. This process has already begun with two new manufacturers that will ramp up our production to more than fifty times its previous rate allowing us to vigorously tackle our order backlog while working toward imminent real-time shipping fulfillment.
blairbeckwith··on Pay It Forward Design Bundle – 100% to Watsi
This is a pretty great bundle, even if you only redeem a couple of the offers like myself.

Wunderlist and Scribd alone make this an easy purchase for me; I was going to buy Wunderlist Pro yesterday, so this is perfect.

blairbeckwith··on Nevada puts stop to ridesharing Uber for now
> It'd probably take a couple hours to walk between Mandalay Bay and Encore

I've only done that particular walk once, but walking from Tropicana to Encore (a bit farther than Mandalay - Encore) took about 45 minutes I believe; a bit of a trek, but definitely manageable.

I think in an entire week on the strip, I took a cab exactly twice; once from the airport to the strip, and once to a shopping mall off the strip. Had Uber been around when I was there, I certainly would have used it more.

blairbeckwith··on We Have No Idea If Online Ads Work
I think you know this isn't what he meant.
blairbeckwith··on Clearing the Air
What an immature post. I get what they;re saying, but it really could have been phrased better.
blairbeckwith··on Boosted's Electric Skateboard (YC S12)
Do you, or have you ever run a business?
blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: Thinking of mentoring? Looking for a mentor?
Quite experienced in building developer communities around platforms. Whether you're looking to kickstart an ecosystem or grow an existing one further, I have solid knowledge of the process from a software and business perspective. I currently run Shopify's App Store ecosystem which does millions of dollars/year in revenue for our partners.

blairbeckwith··on Why Nerds are Unpopular (2003)
That's a whole lot of meaningless bullshit talking about how awesome you were to get to a single line of relevancy.
blairbeckwith··on Scan business cards into more than 250 apps
I love what Zapier has done for integrating services. Keep it up guys.
blairbeckwith··on Almost half of homeless men had traumatic brain injury in their lifetime
Just a few weeks ago, I was walking home from work and witnessed one homeless man suckerpunch another in the face, knocking him off balance on ice and causing him to fall straight back and crack his head open on the ice. There was an instant pool of blood that started spreading quickly, with other homeless people scattering instantly. A cop arrived on the scene almost immediately.

I was incredibly surprised reading this that 87% had TBI before becoming homeless. I wonder what the numbers are for repeated TBI after becoming homeless among those that had their first instance pre-homelessness.

blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: If you worked with a grad from a code bootcamp, how effective were they?
I hired one. She got rejected from my company for a developer position, but I hired her for my team anyways for a hybrid business development/programming role.

This was ~2 months ago; she's learned enough in two months that we're going to hire her at the end of her contract as a full-time Rails developer. I'm not sure that the 10 week bootcamp was enough for her to pass our screening, but in the two months she's been here she's more than proved herself as capable.

As a business guy, I can't comment much on why she was denied originally, but so far it's worked out.

blairbeckwith··on Tarsnap now accepts Bitcoin
Gosh, I hope not. If anything, they should raise their prices.
blairbeckwith··on Show HN: Pokemon Color Palettes
This is really neat. What generation's sprites did you use? Are they all from the same generation? I wonder how, if at all, the palettes change over the years given new sprites coming out.
blairbeckwith··on This is What it's Like to Be a Woman at a Bitcoin Meetup
I would agree that the men who would hit a woman would almost exclusively fall in to the group who would grope them and say inappropriate things to them. However, I know way more otherwise well-socially-adjusted men who would make sexist comments but would never hit a woman.
blairbeckwith··on This is What it's Like to Be a Woman at a Bitcoin Meetup
I guess I'm sorry (sarcastic). Thanks for the knowledge, though. That's helpful (not sarcastic).
blairbeckwith··on This is What it's Like to Be a Woman at a Bitcoin Meetup
disclaimer: I'm on her side.

I've never really understood the potential-physical-confrontation argument. It must be a very, very small minority of men who's first reaction to being embarrassed and shamed by a woman is to physically assault her in public?

blairbeckwith··on This is What it's Like to Be a Woman at a Bitcoin Meetup
I agree wholeheartedly with this article, however I don't think it's fair to use such a wide brush. "This is What it's Like to Be a Woman at _This_ Bitcoin Meetup" would have been more appropriate. There are bad apples in every community, and it certainly sounds like the author met some, but it's important to realize that a few bad apples don't ruin the whole bushel.
blairbeckwith··on This is What it's Like to Be a Woman at a Bitcoin Meetup
You are wrong, and a part of the problem.
blairbeckwith··on Show HN: Codebox - Open-source cloud and desktop IDE
Seems like a cool project, but you might want so consider changing the name, given that CodeBox has been around for years: http://www.shpakovski.com/codebox/
blairbeckwith··on Ask HN: why should I care about my Klout score?
You shouldn't, it doesn't, and they aren't.
blairbeckwith··on Shopify Raises $100 Million
Thanks so much for the kind words Visakan. Always a pleasure.
blairbeckwith··on Shopify Raises $100 Million
Feel free to reach out to me (email in profile) – I have previously organized a bunch of events and meetups in Ottawa and am fairly connected to the scene. Can probably point you in the right direction.
blairbeckwith··on Two million Facebook, Gmail and Twitter passwords stolen
Authentication apps like Google Authenticator or Authy work without any data service of any kind. Most services provide backup codes you can print out and keep in your wallet or another safe spot in case you lose or destroy your device.
