blahyawnblah··on Our domain and 700 non-profit sites got blocked by Meta
I'm not sure small claims would do something like that
blahyawnblah··on US Job Outlook for Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers
URT?
blahyawnblah··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring
Isn't the developer xps sold through their website?
blahyawnblah··on Stripe has decided to nuke my entire business
Don't wait for a response. Swap out stripe for something else so that you can process payments. If they give a satisfactory response and restore you could switch back

You do realize some of the internet's biggest sites run on the lamp stack, right?
blahyawnblah··on How a new hard hat technology can protect workers better from concussion
Kind of like MIPS helmets?
blahyawnblah··on Why is rent skyrocketing?
How can you make housing not an investment? Require set constant purchase and sale prices on land and houses?

Lots of people buy a starter house with the intention of selling for more when they, for example, start having kids and need a bigger house.

blahyawnblah··on Hacker News moved off AWS again at 10:17 PM PST
You can lease capacity for significant savings.
blahyawnblah··on Reddit’s database has two tables (2012)
> don't prematurely optimize

Premature optimization is the root of all evil

blahyawnblah··on AWS us-east-2 outage
I wonder if this is done because people have a tendency or something to always create resources in 'A' (or some other AZ) and this helps spread things around.

And if I would have read the page the link points to better, that's exactly the reason

blahyawnblah··on Flarum – Simple forum software for building great communities
In /tmp/somefolder is a copy of each file that is currently being downloaded
blahyawnblah··on Internet Filtering in Canada: Rogers' NHL Blocking Order
All of ESPN's streaming solutions are awful. "Your event is starting soon" messages half hour into events, events on the wrong channel, events not cutting over, and the list goes on
blahyawnblah··on Flarum – Simple forum software for building great communities
Would be more viable if they had a file upload/download module that didn't allocate a files worth of space per download per user. The FoF module is not usable.
blahyawnblah··on In a small Virginia town, citizens review police like Uber drivers
Here in Oregon it's the policy of the DMV, Department of Transportation, and police departments to educate drivers. After enough warnings or you're acting like you don't care you will get a ticket.

Interestingly enough, I've been pulled over several times but always by a different department it seems like. They obviously don't talk to each other or I would have gotten more tickets by now.

blahyawnblah··on Apple Discontinues macOS Server
What hardware does apple use in their data centers?
blahyawnblah··on Three areas where Google Search lags behind competitors: code, cooking, travel
Quotes around words have basically stopped working on Google. Which makes all three of those searches even more difficult.
blahyawnblah··on CDC warns of a steep decline in teen mental health
> I'm not the in US, so my knowledge of the educational system comes only from what I read, but it's my understanding that "extracurriculars" are an important part of college admissions, which is different from Europe.

That's really only a thing for the private universities and those don't make up a large percentage

blahyawnblah··on Interview questions to ask your interviewer
Windows with WSL2 is great. Have you tried that?

VSCode can run from WSL2 and have access to its file system

blahyawnblah··on RegExr: Learn, Build and Test Regex
This one is my go-to. But it would be a lot better if it didn't display an alert when you try to leave the site. I've started to try and find alternatives.
blahyawnblah··on JetBrains Mono – the free and open-source typeface for developers
I like the old Consolas font. Basically the same but not quite as thick.
blahyawnblah··on My collection of fun and interesting hacking/coding movies and literature
Sneakers is a great movie. Social engineering vs outright hacking. A lot of what it's about is still relevant today.
blahyawnblah··on AWS us-east-1 outage
Ideally, yes. In practice, most are hosted in a single region but with multiple availability zones (this is called high availability). What you're talking about is fault tolerance (across multiple regions). That's harder to implement and costs more.
blahyawnblah··on AWS us-east-1 outage
Doesn't amazon.com run on us-east-1?
blahyawnblah··on AWS us-east-1 outage
Isn't us-east-1 where they deploy everything first? And the only region that has 100% of all available services?
blahyawnblah··on AWS us-east-1 outage
Lots of services are only in us-east-1. The sso system isn't working 100% right now so that's where I assume it's hosted.
blahyawnblah··on Ask HN: What are these low quality “code snippet” sites?
I do the same, but with "mdn" instead of "w3schools"
blahyawnblah··on Goodbye Microsoft SQL Server, hello Babelfish
encrypt at rest
blahyawnblah··on Prevent Google from mangling search result links when click/copying on Firefox
Isn't it "!g" or do both work?
blahyawnblah··on I ruin developers’ lives with my code reviews and I'm sorry
If you have to "destroy" every PR from a developer, you're wasting more time (money) than it would take to replace them.

Why should be bad PRs ever be allowed for any reason?

blahyawnblah··on Employers bow to tech workers in hottest job market since the dot-com era
You can get good raises by changing jobs. You can also get good raises by talking to your manager. Don't be passive about the income that you get.
