blahblahblogger··on Jack Dorsey says it’s time to rethink the fundamental dynamics of Twitter
> He suggested that the service works best as an “interest-based network,” where you log in and see content relevant to your interests, no matter who posted it

Not to mention Jack/Twitter's co-founder Evan Williams has a company called Medium that literally does just that.

blahblahblogger··on A web browser reference implementation using Mozilla Android Components
As an Android engineer, what would I use this for in my app?

Is it something I would embed to use in lieu of Chrome Custom Tabs if I wanted an in-app browser experience (similar to CCT) but that I could customize more or if I wanted more control over the "web browser engine" for some reason?

blahblahblogger··on Which American accent do you have? (2007)
Same here, I'm from the Chicago burbs and was identified by both quizzes as such.

But the NYT one had some that I wanted to select multiple for. Such as "service road" & "frontage road". I selected "service road" but I know that in Chicago where I'm from the term "frontage road" is used but I don't think I personally would use it in a sentence since it isn't intuitive to me.

There were other examples where I wanted to select multiple.

Also never been to Buffalo and don't know what a "weck" is.

blahblahblogger··on Fossil vs Git
Can you explain this a bit more?
blahblahblogger··on H-1B: Oracle favored hiring foreign graduates of US colleges over American grads
> H1-B candidates are attractive for companies because it is harder for them to switch jobs. Companies can lock these employees for longer, and they can pay them less.

This is ultimately what it's about.

I work as a software engineer in the Bay Area and the number of H1Bs doing the same grunt work coding that I do is astounding. H1Bs were supposed to be for some sort of super specialized work no?

blahblahblogger··on Big ol’ ball o’ JavaScript
I lol-ed a bit here.
blahblahblogger··on A tech addict who works in the tech industry
Someone else said it's an addiction if it interferes with your life.

But for me, it's all my life is really.

I don't have friends, relationships, etc. and haven't since I was a teenager (I'm in my thirties now). As such I don't have hobbies or whatever.

I just go to work (programmer) and come home and browse reddit, hn, youtube, etc. until the next day.

blahblahblogger··on Chinese battery expert is charged with stealing trade secrets from US employer
It is interesting to see so many tech firms going well out of their way to hire competent engineers/scientists from China, even the ones who graduate from US universities.

Of course it's difficult to talk about the real issues associated with this, such as how China leverages family relations in China against expats abroad, or how they've made it a national priority to entice this sort of behavior.

The reason it's difficult is because it's on the borderline of dog-whistle racism and what not. But these are serious issues that should be examined.

blahblahblogger··on Facebook Is Developing a Cryptocurrency for WhatsApp Transfers, Sources Say
Honest question, but does a cryptocurrency have to be decentralized for it to be determined a cryptocurrency?

I didn't think that was the case. It may be more in the spirit of crypto but I don't think it's a hard requirement?

blahblahblogger··on At Blind, a security lapse revealed private complaints from tech employees
> Blind claims on its website that its email verification “is safe, as our patented infrastructure is set up so that all user account and activity information is completely disconnected from the email verification process.”

Wow a patented infrastructure! Dope!

I wonder if it's open source so that can be validated objectively?

blahblahblogger··on How to balance full-time work with creative projects
> Sure, for the first couple days I wasting as much time as I possibly could - happily so - and then I started knocking out all the major house projects I had pending (insulating the crawlspace, fixing annoyances, etc).

It's amazing how many people in this thread are echoing similar sentiments. It's clear that the 2-day weekend doesn't seem to proffer enough time off for people to get "in the zone" so to speak.

Or maybe we've become accustomed to the 2-day weekend such that we don't value it's time as much. It seems like these "mini sabbaticals" some of you mention (2-week staycations) are the way to go.

But I know I have a lot of little projects I want to work on or explore, but knowing I won't have enough time or I could do something else (the opportunity cost), I often likewise waste time on nights and weekends.

So cumulatively, these nights and weekends add up to a greater time-length, but because they aren't in a contiguous block like your staycation, I end up with worse results than with the mini-sabbatical model, despite having more time overall.

blahblahblogger··on Show HN: Stay with founders in San Francisco
> One of our core hypotheses is that a lot of people in SF don't want/need to rent out their rooms for a profit. They'd rather just meet and host particularly awesome people.

hmmm, I think "a lot of people" referred to above is actually the group of startup founders with a room to rent? In which case probably not a lot per se?

Is this a side project or a product? If it's a product it doesn't seem like it will "scale" (sorry to use that lingo).

blahblahblogger··on Holloway Guide to Equity Compensation
What do you do when a company won't give you all the info required to really evaluate an offer like the 409A or some such?
blahblahblogger··on Show HN: CloudForecast.io – Daily email report to help you monitor your AWS cost
> The longer answer is that, although Amazon does provide many tools, as I'm sure anyone who has attempted to use them for cost analysis and/or forecasting has found, they are, at best, difficult (i.e. require a remarkable amount of human labor to extract the desired information, if that's even possible). At worst, one discovers that it's impossible to find out what one truly wants from the tool, even after exerting the effort, although it might be a close approximation. Amazon has little incentive to spend money improving a tool that would help their customers send them less revenue.

I completely agree.

I tried out that complicated as hell calculator, and found that for a lot of fields I was just inputting numbers, with no idea what I was doing.

I think the Cloud Formation price predictor thing is pretty useful for a Cloud Formation script. But I'm new to Cloud Formation and probably won't use it b/c it may be too complex for my needs and I don't know what I'm doing.

blahblahblogger··on Imagining Sex Redistribution
> Normalizing sex work as work and having it become as ubiquitous and passe as massage therapy: “Hey, what are you doing after work? Getting a massage from Rafael, you know he’s amazing at finding all the sore spots. You? Going to see Isaac, my sex worker. His cunnilingus is divine.”

I don't know about that - it definitely commoditizes sex a bit too much for me. Why even bother with the difficulty of relationships and love when you can get your carnal needs met so easily?

blahblahblogger··on Unidentified Plane-Bae Woman’s Statement Confirms the Worst
Laws can't keep up with technology. But it may be time for a law to come into fruition since everyone is now a paparazzi and you don't have to be a celeb to be a target.

They know the name of the individual who recorded it and transmitted it to Twitter. They can go after her if there is a law and hopefully have a real punishment in place for this kind of behavior.

Furthermore the individual who recorded it also profited off it. She has a career that depends on how much exposure she gets and this is apparently the biggest thing she's done. She was also offered something by Alaska Airlines (their tweet was deleted), tried to get a Buzzfeed job from the attention, sent out some tweet about getting free plane tickets from her followers, and increased her exposure even more via the tons of new followers she gained.

blahblahblogger··on Ask HN: As a team lead how to handle project going off the rails?
Yes it seems like an item would be posted on an axis where theoretically the item could exist on both ends?
blahblahblogger··on Facebook’s diversity efforts show little progress after five years
I think his point may have been that "who applies" is the END of the funnel.

If there are issues earlier in the pipeline then we can't just focus on the end of it at the "who's applying" stage.

If we want more representation, are women more represented in comp sci programs? Are they going into related engineering fields? Do they go to meet up groups or construct new ones if they don't want to go to existing ones?

blahblahblogger··on Facebook’s diversity efforts show little progress after five years
Can someone tell me why these tech companies even publish these numbers?

It seems like they always end up with egg on their face. And they have no obligation to be transparent as private (or public) entities.

But now they all have to have chief diversity officers and diversity councils and PR/recruiting teams for diversity - all of which cost money and hasn't seemed to move the needle very much.

And which as another poster pointed out, doesn't fundamentally change the underlying issue about who applies to these jobs, who goes to school for computer science, etc.

blahblahblogger··on Facebook’s diversity efforts show little progress after five years
I completely agree and I'm not sure why over-representation isn't a larger issue.
blahblahblogger··on Ask HN: As a team lead how to handle project going off the rails?
> Organized on the 2x2 with these axes X: "risk/complexity" Y:"desirability" (that's business & customer desirability.)

Not to sound like an idiot here or anything, but does that mean something like this: Risk | Complexity ---------------------------------- BiZ desirability | | ---------------------------------- Cus desirability | |

Can't an item be in many of these squares?

blahblahblogger··on Introducing Jib — Build Java Docker images better
I wish fabric8 had Gradle support.

This ticket implies that it isn't "build tool agnostic" (https://github.com/fabric8io/fabric8-maven-plugin/issues/609...) and I found a few github repos that are "gradle plugins" for Fabric8 but they only had a few stars or were out of date.

blahblahblogger··on ‘No Poach’ Deals for Fast-Food Workers Face Scrutiny
It's really odd too - what's the advantage?

Not to be offensive but these people do low skilled work. You can onboard another employee relatively quickly.

A part of me would think it's there to avoid turnover costs because I imagine these businesses have decent turnover given the low quality job and pay, why not bounce to a new job if this one sucks or is too stressful?

blahblahblogger··on Ex-Apple Employee Stole Secrets for Chinese Firm, U.S. Says
> I’m sad at myself for feeling “well yeah not unexpected” > Because it’s only 1/1000000 people that do this that will cause prejudice and disdain for all the good actors.

Damn I came in here to say the same thing and feel sad at myself now too.

So not to be racial but from an American standpoint I liken it to hiring an American who happens to be Chinese versus an engineer from China.

For the first, they are American, their family is here, their life is here - where would they flee to?

For the latter, they're here temporarily most likely. So why not take the risk and get a big reward?

blahblahblogger··on Spanish Wikipedia also shuts down in protest at proposed EU copyright law
I thought this comment sounded familiar, you posted the exact same comment yesterday on the "Italian Wikipedia" article: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17450827.

I can't wait for the French, German, and Greek wikipedia to also shut down so that I can read this again!

blahblahblogger··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
The touch bar is another example of this.

I always hit the wrong keys, even after a year I'll end up hitting ~/` instead of the escape key, I routing hit "mute" instead of volume down (or I'll hit up instead).

blahblahblogger··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
Oh yes, I'm happy to see others mentioning the half size up and down. Even after a year with this keyboard this still trips me up.
