blahbl4hblahtoo··on '60 Minutes': NSA Good, Snowden Bad
Misguided in thinking that a large nation state needs a signals intelligence capability? They aren't the SS.

The NSA has overreached because after 9/11 congress demanded that they start overreaching. The AUMF was sweeping in its breadth.

They will have to be reigned in...but the idea that what they are doing is "evil"... if we aren't going to hold people accountable for torture it doesn't make sense to call privacy invasion "evil".

blahbl4hblahtoo··on '60 Minutes': NSA Good, Snowden Bad
Look, existing media outlets are incapable of certain kinds of criticism. Its as unlikely that 60 minutes would take a anti-NSA stance as it would be to take an anti-Army stance. Establishment players are just that...im not even a 100% Snowden backer... but expecting anti-establishment journalism form the definition of the establishment is just going to give you indigestion.

Then there is the part where somehow that means the rich deserve preferential treatment because of this and the other classes must be lazy worthless people...

blahbl4hblahtoo··on How can C Programs be so Reliable? (2008)
You are totally correct about the engineering that goes into complex software development being the cause of the stability this guy mentions.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on How can C Programs be so Reliable? (2008)
Since everyone has access to decent c toolchain these days you tend to see this over and over again. The "wisdom tradition" of UNIX? There is some kind of need for this kind of counter factual "the ancients had powers we can't believe" thing... the thing is that languages and frameworks surface sets of techniques for solving problems that if not present end up needing to be reinvented... this goes for C and UNIX, mainframes, os400, erlang...whatever. Maybe I'm just being contrary, but it seems to me that the lessons I learn in one language apply to all the others at least in some facet.

I worked my way through SICP last year and it really changed the way that I think about code...while also not making me a lisp nut. It seemed to me that lisp could have been anything else and the techniques would still be there.

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Why you should use OpenGL and not DirectX
Honestly, up until IOS and Android there wasn't a large "cross platform" gaming market. Now there is and OpenGL is starting to gain more use...the good thing there is that there are more people writing, buying, and playing games. (Not that OpenGL is being used.)

These vehement kinds of slashdotty style articles about MS's being this controlling conspiracy...you would almost think that...gasp...its a large corporation doing everything it can to make money for its shareholders. I mean, if the roles were somehow different and Apple were the market leader for the most popular gaming platform they would be all sweetness and light and no one would have any reason to complain. (Oh wait...)

It turns out that businesses in that position tend to make "lock in" plays. This post kind of glosses over SGI's history with OpenGL as if they were only ever kind and loving shepherds of an open standard that was created to help children.

Don't use directx cuz "evil" is stupid. If you were writing an application that needed to be cross platform...like a 3D authoring environment...you would probably want to look at opengl. (instead of writing your own...) If you were targeting the windows ecosystem directx has some platform integration features that are interesting. Tooling and developer experience also matter.

This kind of breathless nonsense is boring and silly.

Has anyone else noticed a pattern here?

blahbl4hblahtoo··on First Victim of Amazon Drones: The Credibility of CBS and 60 Minutes
This is almost exactly how I felt when I saw that Google was "taking on death".

Some of these SV companies are better than others at this kind of thing. Amazon, Google, and Apple have this ability to make otherwise skeptical journalists just turn their brains off...Google's "death stunt" was the cover of Newsweek for god's sake.

An Austrian economist predicting the end of the world? I'm shocked!
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Bitcoins: The Second Biggest Ponzi Scheme in History
Austrian economics are so painful. Its amazing to me how impervious to contrary evidence its adherents are... their blind faith in their core beliefs are so unshakable. Every time I read one of them say that money arose from markets I wonder why they don't sponsor a bill that sets up an agency like NOAA that watches for dangerous conditions in this primeval force called "the market" so that people can be warned when "the market" is angry and another virgin needs to be tossed into its going maw in an act of propitiation.

Just the idea that markets pre-date states is so ingrained.

blahbl4hblahtoo··on A Prediction: Bitcoin Is Doomed to Fail
I really like that description.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on A Prediction: Bitcoin Is Doomed to Fail
I think the idea that states co-opted money doesn't stand up to historical scrutiny. States have evolved for the purposes of providing situations where "markets" can arise.

I have to be honest though, I'm not an expert on the subject. Also, everything about the critique presented doesn't have to be false for the successes that bitcoin has had to be real. I think that bitcoin really serves as a form of regulatory arbitrage... its real value, the value that people are placing on it, represent gains that can be made by avoiding fees and oversight. Its an alternate currency that couldn't exist without a state system.

As for the inflationary ideas...I find it really very similar to gold or maybe some other more rare natural resource... don't all of the ideas about hoarding and "de beers" (sic) style monopoly still apply? I'm genuinely asking not trying to be a prick...

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Jolla
OK. Fair enough. That doesn't not make Nokia a sentient entity with "a soul".

It's a business that has a fair degree of social responsibility in its business plans.

My point with this isn't to be pedantic...I'm trying to say that referring to them in this way plays into the larger picture where it is in all businesses interest to have us refer to them as a person. They aren't.

blahbl4hblahtoo··on Jolla
You know, I wasn't trying to be a troll. Nokia is a large business that makes money just like other businesses. I think its strange to generalize them the same way that we do people...
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Jolla
It's not a person. Microsoft has statements like that. Why don't they have a soul? I'm actually not trying to be flippant. I think that people need to question their assumptions about "companies as people"...Nokia didn't "have a soul". It was a business. The fact that people think it did reflects more on their marketing than anything else.
blahbl4hblahtoo··on Jolla
Nokia had a soul? It was a corporation.
