blahbhthrow3748··on Was there PTSD in the ancient or medieval world?
Same here, after transition I smell very noticeably different. It's awesome to wash my clothes less often
blahbhthrow3748··on Ask HN: Not smart enough to a programmer, where to take my life from here?
This sounds like depression to me. You're having trouble finding activities that interest you and feeling pessimistic about the future. It's easy to get stuck thinking that everything is hopeless or you're going to feel like this forever.

Try taking some time off to decompress and talking to a psychologist. It's a slow process and it can be very challenging but with time you can start getting excited about new challenges again.

blahbhthrow3748··on Radical surgery permanently extends your legs
It's amazing to me that to get gender confirming surgery you need a letter from a psychologist and an unrelated doctor to prove you're sane enough, but if you're a rich dude you can just pay to have your legs broken so you can be over 6 feet tall.

This. I work at a place that had no retirement plan, subpar health insurance, generally clueless HR and no support for career development besides "fake it til you make it".

Of course they have ping pong tables and video games and free snacks and drink fridges. The cost and logistics of putting in a couple ping-pong tables is way cheaper than giving everyone vision coverage, or matching retirement contributions.

blahbhthrow3748··on I had to get a background check for my job; the report is a 300 page pdf
Right, there's no objective morality, any action anyone takes is their right because freedom. It's equally bad when anyone says anything bad because... reasons.
blahbhthrow3748··on The spine of San Francisco is now car-free
Because there's an argument that the way the world is currently arranged is the best, most ideal way because people are perfectly rational, etc. If it's obvious that someone made suboptimal choices in the past because of a profit motive, shouldn't we examine that and attempt to correct for it, rather than assuming that the status quo is as good as we can get? We may need to save ourselves out of a local maxima and that's not a painless process.
blahbhthrow3748··on Hachikō
We have a pet Japanese Akita and he's extremely loyal and good at remembering people. He freaks out when he sees his favourite people, even after years apart.
blahbhthrow3748··on LA Fresh Poultry: A Store Where Los Angeles Converges
My understanding is animals die very quickly from halal butchery. Compared to animals twisting their ankles walking over metal grates, or people stomping on baby chicks with work boots, this seems like a weird thing to focus on
blahbhthrow3748··on DevDegree: Work at Shopify and get a free CS degree in parallel
Lots of people don't have a chance. There's a fixed number of slots and many more qualified applicants.
blahbhthrow3748··on DevDegree: Work at Shopify and get a free CS degree in parallel
If everyone starts from the same place it's fine to say "give everyone equal opportunity". If you really want to have equal opportunity given the historical and social background you have to acknowledge that everyone doesn't start from the same place.
