blacksmith_tb··on Pentagon formally labels Anthropic supply-chain risk
A bit ironic then that they're actively using Claude in the current war effort[1].

blacksmith_tb··on Was Windows 1.0's lack of overlapping windows a legal or a technical matter?
Overlapping was hard, it was one of the core parts of the original Macintosh OS, courtesy of Bill Atkinson[1].

blacksmith_tb··on Do AI Agents Make Money in 2026? Or Is It Just Mac Minis and Vibes?
OpenAI's own estimate is a $14B loss in 2026[1]. Anthropic is aiming to break even this year (and some of that is probably due to Cowork, so that at least isn't unreasonable). So it may be revenue, but it isn't profit, yet...

blacksmith_tb··on Following 35% growth, solar has passed hydro on US grid
Presumably we have dammed everything that made sense to (and some that didn't), so solar / wind will keep growing while hydro is unlikely to change (unless it drops).
blacksmith_tb··on AI Will Never Be Conscious
Dune[1]. Herbert's world destroys its AIs when they get too smart.

blacksmith_tb··on The dance floor is disappearing in a sea of phones
True, it wasn't very specific, but I think we can rule out Afghanistan where music and dancing are illegal.. I haven't been to Tonga, seems possible that there might a little nightlife in Nukuʻalofa but probably not laser-wielding security, so that narrows it down a little.
blacksmith_tb··on MuMu Player (NetEase) silently runs 17 reconnaissance commands every 30 minutes
It's still distasteful, but they aren't in a position to do me much direct harm, so there's that.
blacksmith_tb··on California's new bill requires DOJ-approved 3D printers that report themselves
I agree, that clause is there to explain why. To my eye, Madison appears to have been thinking mostly about state militias versus a standing (national) army. We obviously don't muster any of those today, I suppose the closest we come is the National Guard.
blacksmith_tb··on California's new bill requires DOJ-approved 3D printers that report themselves
It does mention "a well-regulated militia" though, and oddly legal gun owners don't belong to one of those.
blacksmith_tb··on Over 65? Congratulations, You Own the Economy
True - though I would say that the elderly have had a chance to earn and invest longer than the young, so it's not exactly like that's a nefarious plot. But a better tax structure would make that less glaring (same for the multibillionaires, only more so).
blacksmith_tb··on Over 65? Congratulations, You Own the Economy
Hmm, Musk, Bezos, Huang, and Zuckerberg are all younger than 65...[1]

blacksmith_tb··on Meta patents AI that takes over a dead person account to keep posting-chatting
So now the Are You Dead app [1] can just reply "yes I am, how are you?".

blacksmith_tb··on WiFi could become an invisible mass surveillance system
You can do it to yourself[1], I am using Tommy for presence detection in Home Assistant, works great (my house is small, so two ESP32s works fine, I am sure having 3-4 would let it see my cat breathing).

blacksmith_tb··on Omega-3 is inversely related to risk of early-onset dementia
Not much meat, however[1] (unless we're counting insects, I suppose, but even then, still mostly fruit).

blacksmith_tb··on France's homegrown open source online office suite
Not the OP, but I would think most people would expect to see a word processor, a spreadsheet, some kind of presentation tool, and maybe a simple database. That's not just comparing to MS Office, that's LibreOffice as well? La Suite seems to have more and better collaboration tools than LO, but it is also less document-focused, just looking through their repos.
blacksmith_tb··on Animated Knots
It is a wonderful catalog, but I don't find it to be as useful for learning to tie the actual knots as books by Budworth, Pawson, etc. (or Youtube, these days)

One of the cool aspects of knots for this audience is that they have a unix-like aspect where multiple individually-useful knots can be "piped" together, the example I like to use is the Trucker's Hitch:

https://www.animatedknots.com/truckers-hitch-knot

(which also can be tied in multiple ways, depending on which knots you combine to make it)

blacksmith_tb··on Fela Kuti First African to Get Grammys Lifetime Achievement Award
I think "If water kill your child / Water you go use" is fairly profound, and a good demonstration of the idea that the pidgin expression refers to. And it rocks, of course.
blacksmith_tb··on My Mom and Dr. DeepSeek (2025)
I hadn't really even seen much in the way of recent, first / second person accounts of what it's like to receive chronic care in modern China. It's sad but maybe not surprising to see that it's dysfunctional in its own special way.
blacksmith_tb··on My Mom and Dr. DeepSeek (2025)
The dangers are obvious (and also there are some fascinating insights into how healthcare works practically in China). I wonder if some kind of "second opinion" antagonistic approach might reduce the risks.
blacksmith_tb··on Tea Chemistry (1997)
Worth mentioning that though tea does contain polyphenols and flavinoids which are good for us (and l-theanine and caffeine which we enjoy introducing to our nervous systems), it's had a much bigger impact on health historically because it required us to heat water to boiling (or near boiling, depending on what kind of tea you're making).

Also, can't miss a chance to spice things up with the mention of adding salt to brewed tea[1]. Which is heretical, but seems palatable to me, though I probably wouldn't do it to good tea.

blacksmith_tb··on Starlink users must opt out of all browsing data being used to train xAI models
It's gross, but of course we think many ISPs are abusive in similar ways? I haven't ever used a Starlink connection, I wonder if their latency a problem for VPNs or tunneling.
blacksmith_tb··on America could have $4 lunch bowls like Japan but for zoning laws
Not the OP, but I took their implication to be that 5% of the electorate decided the direction future development would take (or not take).
blacksmith_tb··on So, you’ve hit an age gate. What now?
I agree they want the face data, but I think it's less clear they want to "hand it" (presumably that's really "sell it"?) to third parties. My sense is Google and Apple and Meta are amassing data for their own uses, but I haven't gotten the impression they're very interested in sharing it?
blacksmith_tb··on Google AI Studio is now sponsoring Tailwind CSS
I'm not a fan of Tailwind, but I can see that it's probably reasonable for code gen to be able to write / extend projects that use Tailwind, since it's in pretty widespread use. For a new project, maybe it could ask if you want to use Tailwind or just keep things vanilla?
blacksmith_tb··on Jeffgeerling.com has been migrated to Hugo
Ah, that makes more sense. I would agree that for sites that need more than the bare minimum server-side still makes a lot of sense (I was just confused here in the context of little personal sites / blogs).
blacksmith_tb··on Jeffgeerling.com has been migrated to Hugo
I was nodding along until your last paragraph - SSGs encourage letting other people own parts of your personal site, really? Sure, people bolt on Disqus or something, but otherwise I am not sure I follow the argument. Isn't part of the appeal of SSGs that all you have is a bunch of html/css/js that you can drop on any server anywhere (even a solar-powered RPi can serve a lot of requests[1])?

blacksmith_tb··on Pebble Round 2
Yes, your calculus is exactly like mine - there are things to like about the Round (personally I just find round watches more aesthetically pleasing, we've had a couple hundred years of mostly round cases...), but I want longer battery and a shorter wait to get my watch.
blacksmith_tb··on Quickemu: Quickly create and run optimised Windows, macOS and Linux VMs
Is UTM buggy on Apple Si? I have been running an aarch64 Ubuntu VM on my M4 Mini for a while without any problems. Haven't tried macOS or Win guests though.
blacksmith_tb··on Last Year on My Mac: Look Back in Disbelief
Well, they do have a couple, in theory (if they were in stock)...

blacksmith_tb··on An ounce of silver is now worth more than a barrel of oil
Sarcasm? 150-200M oz of silver are recycled annually[1]. Oil obviously is mostly burned and won't be recoverable, and clearly finite (even if we managed to squeeze out more with fracking etc.)
