blackoil··on BYD launches sodium-ion grid-scale BESS product
> A lot of what comes from China might be low quality (especially for internal consumption) but it's cheap and they're specializing

In the batteries CATL and BYD are leaders in terms of cost, quality and innovation.

blackoil··on BYD launches sodium-ion grid-scale BESS product
It is simply the amount of R&D investment already done and manufacturing pipeline scale that favors Lithium. But if trend continues in couple of years, sodium should have all that market.
blackoil··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
Movies have ratings and entry to hall is restricted. Games have rating and ability to buy them is restricted. books allowed in school libraries is heavily curated and sometimes restricted by law or vested groups. It is illegal to sell R18 magazines to a minor.
blackoil··on QwQ: Alibaba's O1 Like Reasoning LLM
Consumer GPUs don't have Nvlink so they don't work very well in cluster.
blackoil··on QwQ: Alibaba's O1-like reasoning LLM
Can't Alibaba use a Singapore based cloud provider? For Nvidia as long as GPUs don't move to China or maybe directly owned by Chinese company it is clear. For SG based non US data center there aren't any sanctions.
blackoil··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
Instead of binary it should be tiered, complete monitoring of online activity of child till say age 8, to gradually opening the circle till age 14-16. We do it for movies/games.
blackoil··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
> freedom of information, one of the most basics Western freedoms.

Children's access to info is limited in all societies.

blackoil··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
Why not lock device/accounts as minor and put onus on school and parents to ensure devices are appropriately tagged? At least for pre-teens I strongly think it shall work.
blackoil··on In Praise of Print: Reading Is Essential in an Era of Epistemological Collapse
Society is flush with lots of drugs tobacco, alcohol, sugar, junk food, social media, reels... At society level, better laws and campaigns may work best but at individual level you'll get best ROI by focusing efforts on disciplining yourself and your family and friends.
blackoil··on In Praise of Print: Reading Is Essential in an Era of Epistemological Collapse
IIRC one of the common factor with genius/prodigies of yesteryears is they all worked 1:1 or in a small group with some reasonably talented teachers. Unfortunately that is not scalable for mass, so may be custom designed Device + LLM may work better than giving up digital.
blackoil··on In Praise of Print: Reading Is Essential in an Era of Epistemological Collapse
I agree with two major issues raised here. Importance of reading long form content and harms of environment full of distractions.

Saying that solution is not turning back and giving up on digital. It would be same as giving up on printing to embrace a teacher focused learning.

blackoil··on Leica Just Recorded the Highest Revenue in Its Entire 100-Year History
How much did Xiaomi pay for Leica tech/branding.
blackoil··on Scientists are learning why ultra-processed foods are bad
I find two principles work best. First, grandma's wisdom is mostly correct so prefer home-cooked culturally aligned food.

Second moderation, you can have one can of drink and one meal outside power week of anything. So burger and coke or Indian sugary desserts all are good if you can control frequency.

blackoil··on The decline and fall of the British economy (2022)
That gives a temporary (relative) advantage but without any fundamental advantage, your competitor would copy and catchup.
blackoil··on The decline and fall of the British economy (2022)
And that is why I don't find China's policy to "steal" IP as offensive as to some western people and hope my country to emulate some. That's how the rich got rich and hoping honesty and hard work will bring you up is naive.
blackoil··on Gandhi's Letter to Hitler (1940)
Yes. Gandhi's methods work as a call to the morality of the oppressing force. He studied in Britain, and I believe his method of non-violet resistance is forged by his principles and understanding of British people. These methods won't work in Ukraine and Gaza.
blackoil··on The First Virtual Meeting Was in 1916
If a king sends messenger to another king who also carries back the reply. Will that be a virtual meeting?
blackoil··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
> especially with their strict control of information.

You have gross misunderstanding of how this strict control works. It isn't like novels or North Korea where some govt agency is creating/curating the info.

blackoil··on QNX is now free for anything non-commercial, plus there's an RPi image
Was this North America specific. I remember using sdk/dev tools for Symbian. I don't remember timelines, so maybe they changed after iPhone release.
blackoil··on New documentary reveals that 21,000 laborers have died working Saudi Vision 2030
> How can that only be coming out now?

It isn't China/Iran else 21 deaths would have been news. Media/Citizens also align themselves with the foreign policy.

blackoil··on New documentary reveals that 21,000 laborers have died working Saudi Vision 2030
To exit a country, you need to pass their immigration which may require same physical passport on which person has entered. Also, India/Pakistan wouldn't want to antagonize the Saudis as billions in forex flow via these workers. So, it is the cost of being poor.
blackoil··on Stick to boring architecture for as long as possible
>Every business sooner or later will need to create more distributed systems

In real, most businesses won't survive till that, even that will survive can go a long way with a high latency service with a single deployment. A well-designed monolith will take to 10s of millions of DAU from across the world. Worst case you'll add 2-300ms of latency to your call, but if you look around most popular and successful of enterprise software have more than that and people are "happy" using them.

blackoil··on SSH Remoting
Happy path is Open-Core where all enterprisesque features and plugins are part of a commercial pro model. Unhappy path involves switching licenses sometime later or project simply dying because of ROI.
blackoil··on The sins of the 90s: Questioning a puzzling claim about mass surveillance
It is a matter of perspective. Of all Mac users, no of people wanting to hide their app usage are practically 0 when compared to people downloading free wallpaper app or game that need to be protected from their own actions. For 2nd set an OS monitoring the activity and blocking potential harmful ones is more secure.
blackoil··on HTML Form Validation is underused
That's one benefit of using ts on server. We share same zod validation on both end.
blackoil··on GDDR7 Memory Supercharges AI Inference
If 5090 comes with 32GB of this RAM. That should be substantial boost over 4090!! Hope that isn't reflected in the price.
blackoil··on Open Source on its own is no alternative to Big Tech
ARM isn't open source. Companies like MS and Google use OSS that complement themselves but the core money makers are closed source and closely guarded.
blackoil··on Smartphone buyers meh on AI, care more about battery life
I asked if to create task for Monday morning. It created one, Monday 12AM.
blackoil··on Huawei makes divorce from Android official with HarmonyOS NEXT launch
That is the beauty of web. Most end users now interact via web. They have popular alternative to Office, teams, slack etc.

So even if 40-70% of corporate computers can be moved out it's still big.

blackoil··on Huawei makes divorce from Android official with HarmonyOS NEXT launch
Huawei has 22% market share in China which has its own ecosystem, so apps can be converted. Even for Xiaomi and BBK it will make sense to have few China only Harmony phones to hedge against any action by US against them.

Countries like Iran, Russia can be next target for obvious reasons.

In SEA likes of Grab and Gojek can be financially motivated to create apps. If they get a 4-10% marketshare it will make sense for Meta to port its apps to protect its position.

YouTube will be a blocker as Google has strong reason to not support any alternative platform even if it will make sense for the App. Same happened for Win Phone earlier.
