blackoil··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
I think it is other way round.

In a democracy ideas are ingrained in public psyche for support. Be it Muslims/Jews/Christians good/bad, immigrants evil, abortion bad all become part of a large percentage of people's belief and changing that requires equally herculean efforts.

In autocracy, people are generally kept aloof of such decisions so you can always switch enemies from Eurasia to Eastasia and no one cares. In case of China, the value of Taiwan/Arunachal/... is mostly egoistical, based on some notion that Qing China boundaries must be restored. If tomorrow a new leadership comes and makes EU kind of setup with Taiwan, people will have no say and most won't care.

blackoil··on The Hater's Guide to the AI Bubble
What is the training cost of such human? Reliability is another concern. There is no manufacturer whom you can pay 10 billion and get few 1000 of trained processor.
blackoil··on Coding with LLMs in the summer of 2025 – an update
That's a code time dependency which is of least concern. That's like saying how can a company hire a developer, they are now having a dependency.

Code written will continue to run, you can use alternate LLM to further write code. Unless you are a pure vibe coder, you can still type the code. IF programmer stop learning how to write code, that's on them and not Claude's or antirez responsibility.

We are using best tool available to us, right now it is Claude Code, tomorrow it may be something from OpenAI, Meta or Deepseek.

blackoil··on Local LLMs versus offline Wikipedia
A trustless society can't progress/function a lot. I trust doctors who treat me, civil engineers who built my house and even in software which I pretend to be expert in I haven't seen source code of any OS and browser I use as I trust on companies or OSS devs.

Most of this is based on reputation. LLMs are same, I just have to calculate level of trust as I use it.

blackoil··on Mira Murati’s AI startup Thinking Machines valued at $12B in early-stage funding
How many nukes? Will carpeting Silicon Valley unlock the value?
blackoil··on Mira Murati’s AI startup Thinking Machines valued at $12B in early-stage funding
What is the false positive rate? Broken clock...
blackoil··on LLM Inevitabilism
Overinvestment isn't a bug. It is a feature of capitalism. When the dust settles there'll be few trillion-dollar pots and 100s of billion are being spent to get one of them.

Environmental impacts of GenAI/LLM ecosystem are highly overrated.

blackoil··on LLM Inevitabilism
Even if Tesla is destroyed by Musk, EVs and self-driving cars are here to stay. If not in USA than in rest of the world.
blackoil··on LLM Inevitabilism
They may destroy their creations but that would be a minor blip in overall system that will keep moving. Destruction of Facebook, Amazon, SpaceX won't destroy social media, eCommerce or reusable rockets. Previously destruction of giants like IBM/Apple(1st round)/Cray/Sun had no impact on PC, GUI, Supercomputers, Servers or any other fields they were pioneer in. Even if OpenAI/Gemini/Anthropic all disappear immediately the void will be replaced by something else.
blackoil··on Google is tracking you (even when using DuckDuckGo)
I am all for the hustle. Startups are difficult. So, even though I don't like the post, I understand it is done because it works.
blackoil··on Google is tracking you (even when using DuckDuckGo)
Yeah. This is simple fear mongering to sell its own analytics product.
blackoil··on The North Korean fake IT worker problem is ubiquitous
On demand? Also will this trigger some discrimination law?
blackoil··on OpenAI’s Windsurf deal is off, and Windsurf’s CEO is going to Google
Eclipse maintains a public repo.
blackoil··on Supabase MCP can leak your entire SQL database
Database still support RAW queries. So, yeah developer are responsible for proper usage of the tools.
blackoil··on LLMs should not replace therapists
GIGO.
blackoil··on LLMs should not replace therapists
So, you prefer to starve children to death to avoid risk of Diabetes as they grow old.
blackoil··on LLMs should not replace therapists
Aren't mall/parks/arcade used to be cheap and comfortable socialising places? They are in my country and as per "Strange Things" were in USA. Malls are dying in USA because people decided they prefer to keep everything online.
blackoil··on Free as Air, Free as Water, Free as Knowledge (1992)
This is insightful at least interesting considering it is from 1992. Shows the problems we face aren't as novel as we tend to believe, and humans are struggling with them maybe since the dawn of civilization.

I find my own thoughts about this ironic and paradoxical while I want information to be free and myself to be free to access information of my choice. I am also a slave to my basal desires and will gravitate towards "veriest trash".

As an anecdote, in 1980s India, there was one TV channel whose content was controlled by some elite and government with pittance of budget. People were forced to consume with no other choice. With 90s liberalization we now have 100s of channels and customers paying ton of money to view anything of choice; but general opinion is the quality of content has constantly degraded to the rock bottom. Same goes for the Internet. As much as I blame corporations, the publicly driven discourse isn't any better on mediums like WhatsApp and Reddit. For quality content you have to rely on platforms where some "elite" have decided on rules and vehemently enforce them like HN or some sub-reddits.

blackoil··on Huawei releases an open weight model trained on Huawei Ascend GPUs
10s (maybe 100s) of billions that could have gone to Nvidia are going to Huawei, so not surprising they are able to make the progress and pulling along SMIC with them. Most of the sanctions against Huawei were because they were a credible threat to US companies, so again not surprising.
blackoil··on As AI kills search traffic, Google launches Offerwall to boost publisher revenue
Given the monopolies, what are the alternatives? For video content, Youtube is near monopoly with alternatives no better than Google. Same goes for mobile app, website (traffic via Google SE), offline store (search/reviews on maps)
blackoil··on As AI kills search traffic, Google launches Offerwall to boost publisher revenue
The choices given are to die today or die tomorrow, no wonder most are accepting whatever money they can get.
blackoil··on Chimpanzees yawn when observing an android yawn
I remember yawn as a result of lack of oxygen and need for a deep breath. Maybe it was some reaction among animals where they breath even if not feeling lack of oxygen.
blackoil··on Large language models often know when they are being evaluated
If it talks like duck and walks like duck...
blackoil··on Building supercomputers for autocrats probably isn't good for democracy
Listen, you can get one of these local LLMs - and let me tell you, some of them are tremendous, really tremendous - to write exactly like Trump. It's incredible, actually. People will come up to you all the time and they'll say, 'Sir, how do you do it? How do you write so beautifully?' And now, with these artificial intelligence things - which, by the way, I was talking about AI before anyone even knew what it was - you can have them copy his style perfectly. Amazing technology, really amazing.
blackoil··on Zod 4
Drizzle has a zod addon, to generate zod schema from table defn. So table defn is source of truth, we mix generated zod schemas to get hono request validators. Same zod schema are also used on client to validate forms.
blackoil··on The Windows Subsystem for Linux is now open source
Are your git repos in ntfs? WSL1 Linux drives are slow and in WSL2 Ntfs.
blackoil··on Zod 4
We use drizzle + Hono + client with zod. So the entire chain from ui to client to server to DB follow same validation and shape.
blackoil··on OpenAI reaches agreement to buy Windsurf for $3B
Unless you have reason to believe the revenue is declining in recent months or will decline in near future, ARR is a better metric. last year real revenue made sense only for low growth companies.
blackoil··on Hyper – Outperform React on every metric
We have two ways, mix logic with html or mix display code in JS. For large projects React way works better hence its popularity. For hello world class of apps, 1st approach is more appealing hence a million replacement frameworks.
blackoil··on Anubis saved our websites from a DDoS attack
That only applies if author wants to call software "Open Source". You can license it under "SourceAvailableForSmallGuy" with no resistance.
