blackdogie··on Intel Acquires Basis Watch
How does the Basis rank against the other smart watches out there ? I see it's priced higher, $199, where others come in at $100 - $150. The one difference I see is that it can do heart rate monitoring, and a lot of the competition can't (yet).

It's nice to see that they have an API to export your data too.

blackdogie··on MtGox.com is offline
So I guess the transfer out I initiated 3 weeks ago is also lost then. You live you learn I guess !
blackdogie··on [dead]
There's nothing stopping the OP (or anyone) submitting and voting new topics that they like. Looking at his/her profile I see he's only submitted 3 threads & 0 comments. The community here is an active thing, and if you want to it to change, you really have to contribute to it.
blackdogie··on A Sochi Olympics API
Using their Olympics logo is one quick way for you to get a cease and desist letter. http://registration.olympic.org/en/faq/detail/id/25 IANAL

Interesting data though !

blackdogie··on Ask HN: How do you scale up as a freelancer?
I too have had to ask myself this question. But generally my conclusion is that I would try to hire contractors when I'm reaching capacity, i.e. consistently 50+ hours a week of work (don't forget you still have to spend some time that isn't related to generating income, i.e. invoicing, accounting, proposals, etc). Try to work with sub-contractors, who you know you can hire in an ad-hoc basis, but are still of a high quality.

Once you start to reach the next level of growth, i.e. consistently 70+ hours a week of work I would look at hiring someone full time, or at least first in a longer term capacity.

blackdogie··on $30/year flat rate for shipping flowers
Ideal if you do a lot of apologising ;) or maybe if you send corporate flowers often. But as matthewarkin points out you could just get these with AmazonPrime too.
blackdogie··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
In all respect I don't think issuing a chargeback is the way to go here. This doesn't solve anything really, and in fact it could really hurt a business. Why issue a chargeback when a company offers a refund ?
blackdogie··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
Thanks for the clarification Brian, I appreciate your honesty.
blackdogie··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
fair point : exact address redacted now.
blackdogie··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
OP here. My points were 1) the host said there was a glitch in the airbnb system & doubled booked somehow, but I think they either wanted either a longer tenant or they got a better offer for Marathon Weekend in Boston 2) if I cancel I lose 50% , if they do it they lose 3%.
blackdogie··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
Sure. Will fix it now. Server getting batter at the moment.
blackdogie··on What happens when a host cancels with Airbnb?
Hi, I didn't lose anything. I said if I cancel I'd lose 50%, if they cancel they lose 3%
blackdogie··on Free static page hosting on Google App Engine in minutes
I quite like https://www.startssl.com , they are pretty cheap and even free in some cases. I still don't know why companies go for expensive certs.
blackdogie··on [dead]
It seems like every holiday is an excuse for a sale these days.
blackdogie··on RIP Martin Schaedel: 1985–2009
23 , just too freaking young. RIP Martin
blackdogie··on Uber rival accuses car service of dirty tactics
In a world where you generally only get one chance with a new customer, I wonder how many people decided not to use Gett because there wasn't availability at the time that they wanted to try it.

As much as I love über I think these tactics aren't going to win them fans. Competition in the market should be a good thing, right ?

blackdogie··on Intercom raises a Series B round of $23M
There's some real gold in some of those blog posts on there. Well worth reading.
blackdogie··on Same word. Different places? Different meanings
It does seem like a bit of an ad splash page.

But on the topic of different meanings, my favourite example is in Greek, you as "Τι κάνετε" "What are you doing" literally but it translates as "How are you?". These things go always translate directly, and if you are speaking with a nonnative it's likely that these things will occur.

blackdogie··on Ask HN: I'm building one HTML5 game per week, need feedback
really liked game number #3 , not so much a fan of the background music, but definitely it was a cool game to pass away 4 or 5 minutes. Thanks.
blackdogie··on Show HN - Evolux, Uber meets AirBnB for Per-Seat Helicopter Travel
Uber has already done helicopters, http://blog.uber.com/2013/07/02/uberchopper/
blackdogie··on Show HN: Weekly coffee delivery for startups
I like the idea but 2 quick points

$44 per kilo of coffee ? ($20 per pound) That sounds a bit on the expensive side.

No details on if it's ground or bean coffee.

blackdogie··on Show HN: I am sick and tired of all this crypto coin crap.

blackdogie··on Amazon Prime Air
I really don't see this coming before self drivinng cars/van will just drive to your location and open up a hatch for you to collect your goods. Drones are only good for short ranges, light products and not to dense populated locations. Auto driving cars ars would be a hell of a lot more flexible.
blackdogie··on Bitcoin Reaches 1000 USD
I was surprised that there wasn't a dip when it hit 1000, I'm sure that there must have been quite a few people will sell orders at this round, but arbitrary point. If this was the case there would have been some dip, is it just being overly inflated by some rich backers who are slowly taking the cash out, but backing it up when it dips ?
blackdogie··on Bitcoin $600
Well it has come down a little 3 day high off $900 and low of $453, on mtGox
blackdogie··on Pencil
That video made me a little dizzy. it was a fun effect, highlighting the pencil in the middle of the shot, but I had to turn it off.

"Pencil is the most natural and expressive tool for getting ideas on Paper"

iPad + Pencil + App = most expensive expression tool I know too !

blackdogie··on Bitcoins drastically tumbling
I wonder how easy it would be to manipulate the market of bitcoin. If a few people were selling between each other would they be able to inflate the price ? It's below $500 now, and it peaked at over $900 on mtgox a few hours ago.
blackdogie··on Bitcoin $600
This chart might be of use, http://www.davidmcwilliams.ie/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Ana... http://www.davidmcwilliams.ie/2013/11/18/the-view-from-germa... via here. As to where we are in the 'bubble' that's anyone's guess. You just need to be ready when it does crash.
blackdogie··on Microsoft and Xamarin partner
I see one event for Ireland where they will be together https://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=...
blackdogie··on Moving forward on improving HTTP's security
One service I can recommend is https://www.startssl.com/ (no affiliation, just a customer) who offer free certs to individuals , and cheaper certs to businesses (their prices on wildcard certs and multiple domain certs are they best I've seen online $59).
