bjconlan··on Ask HN: Recommend resources that helped your game dev journey?
Italo Calvino was noted as being of great inspiration to Jonathan Blow (as a relative point of interest on the OP's question)

I think during one of the Braid 20th anniversary podcasts[0] he talks to it which I loved listing to (from a historic viewpoint; well moreso than a game dev/design)

bjconlan··on Surface-Stable Fractal Dither on Playdate
Yeah I agree. The dithering effects in Everybody wants to crank the world[0] are much more visually satisfying but as you pointed out perhaps it's the levels of the textures that make it feel... Well like textures.

bjconlan··on A quick review of file watchers
It's a shame that fanotify[0] wasn't pointed out in this document also.

Only since seeing it used in 'zigs --watch' impl on Linux[1] (and the fact that I need to enable admin capabilities to run this in a container) has informed me of it's existence.

bjconlan··on Cosmopolitan Third Edition
Um? Should it be noted that cosmopolitan is currently at version 4?

https://github.com/jart/cosmopolitan/tree/4.0.2

bjconlan··on AMD says Intel's 'horrible product' is causing Ryzen 7 9800X3D shortages
I think it indirectly is (in the form of TSMC) as Intel have started to use TSMC fabs for some of their processor lines and I think this is eating into AMD (and other TSMC customers) production.

They had the same problem with apple and the 4nm fabs, but couldn't exactly say anything as smearish.

bjconlan··on T * sin (t)' ≈ Ornamented Christmas Tree (2013)
Haha, oh I miss the Quebecois. Appropriation of Catholic vernacular make for the best profanities.
bjconlan··on Hyperlight: Virtual machine-based security for functions at scale
Also appreciate the reference. I just realized you're the libriscv author (and as pointed out includeOS contributor). Love all your work!
bjconlan··on Λ-2D: An Exploration of Drawing as Programming Language
The input reminds me a lot of the work pointed to here (good ole jart)[https://justine.lol/lambda/#diagrams]

Now if only I could get my head around it (shout out to the alligator eggs ref too)

bjconlan··on How we built ngrok's data platform
Well, that's what it was originally designed to store/solve; that being Yandex's analytics platform.

bjconlan··on LuaJIT PR: Add Support for RISC-V 64
Oh wow, from Mike Pall himself (I know he "retired" from the maintainer position but glad he is still providing guidance (and then some id imagine))

Seeing a project and a community functioning like this is simply inspiring.

bjconlan··on Random Thoughts about Unity
It's also important not to forget other integrations such as that promoted by "the mono guy" ("one of those" or xamarin or even ximian guys if you're that old) himself: https://github.com/migueldeicaza/SwiftGodot
bjconlan··on Designing (Procedural) Monsters (2021) [video]
I'm so glad you added this. I wasn't really interested in the game (assuming it was a poke-clone) until you pointed out this video! Now I can see that the developer definitely has a direction for the game but identifies fun/and "good feeling" properties and pivots which makes me want to wishlist the game.... But I won't because I really enjoyed that part of the video and it made me laugh.
bjconlan··on "We ran out of columns"
It's a shame the CTO was patronizing. I've generally found this to be the attitude of many IT workers in similar positions. I would recommend trying to allocate (work) time to prototype and get important back of the envelope metrics that they think are valuable along with those that you think are valuable.

At least that's what I would ask of anyone who was trying to improve a system (And not just the developers circumstance which I think is perhaps what they CTO is cautious of)

bjconlan··on Ask HN: Weirdest Computer Architecture?
On reading this I thought "oh someone's doing the Green Arrays thing" but this looks like it pre-dates those CPUs by some time.

But as nobody has mentioned it yet surprisingly: https://www.greenarraychips.com/ albeit perhaps not weird; just different

bjconlan··on Ask HN: Modern Meteor.js Alternative Stack?
Thank you for this comment. I was assuming that meteor died some time ago when mongo was getting a hiding and Apollo/graphql came on the scene. I'm glad you pointed this out (that it isn't dead) and that infact they are releasing v3 soon (from a quick website scan)
bjconlan··on First anode-free sodium solid-state battery
Oh wow this is great technology. (Also surprised that it's driven by the UQ/rio-tinto. Hopefully GMG will learn from the failures of Tritium on the business side of things (as they are from similar stock))
bjconlan··on Copy and Paste context menu entries sometimes disabled when they should not be
Oh my God! I thought it was just me and some silly "we only enable copy for sites without iframes (or something security related) feature". I was quietly hoping someone here had the secret "type 'unprotected pasted' in the devtools console" solution
bjconlan··on Turbo9 – A Compact and Efficient Pipelined 6809 Microprocessor IP
Wow I didn't know Hitachi made anything outside of their superh/sh CPUs (which also do a mixed encoding scheme) I'm guessing they derived it from these guys and appeased the risc crowds. Off topic but I wonder what ever happened to that j-core project. I have a feeling understanding/learning both the turbo9/6809 along with the j2/sh2 would make for a great comparison.
bjconlan··on Low-latency scripting for game engines
I'm so glad this was mentioned every time I see performance related metrics I really wish there was more documentation on how quakec/quake vm worked. Mind you https://fabiensanglard.net/quake3/qvm.php is very good on the technical breakdown which is far more valuable.
bjconlan··on Low-latency scripting for game engines
I think this practice is generally good for "most fast things" I noticed that https://github.com/kparc/ksimple/blob/31370a2c799a2a0e491d52... uses this approach too (this is the core of the k apl which is used in finance and engineering industries so very fast for data processing applications. Not sure how it fares in a more general setting but wouldn't be surprised if it was also competitive.
bjconlan··on My VM is lighter (and safer) than your container (2017)
I believe this work originated at Intel as "clear containers" (which I believe started life from an acquisition (but could be mixing this up...my memory isn't what it used to be). Either way it's great they are being used like this and at Nvidia (I know Alibaba cloud also use this tech)
bjconlan··on Learning K programming: idiom by idiom [pdf]
It should also be noted that the k4 implementation has evolved since Arthur left/sold to First Derivatives. Kdb 4.1 release touts some nice additions to q [1](syntactically I'm not sure if this cascades into underlying k... I don't have that depth of knowledge)

bjconlan··on QBE – Compiler Back End
Wow thank you for these back of the envelope benchmarks. I wanted to "feel out" the practicality of using tinycc with cosmopolitan over the provided gcc implementation (mostly as a fun project to re-educate myself with c and assembly) but now I think I might be better off just using the provided toolset and "building something useful" (aka now I want to get lost in how the strace/xed/dynamic assembly stuff works in cosmopolitan as it's my current favorite discovered dark art while looking through its codebase)
bjconlan··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
I think the original poster is perhaps speaking to previous articles (ie https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39269949) which from the outside looking in made me feel that perhaps this infact was the case (at least for a period).
bjconlan··on The Compiler Explorer Story – Matt Godbolt
Wow, I've gotta give it to the person doing the bibliography/referencing here. They did an outstanding job.
bjconlan··on BQN for birdwatchers (2021)
I was meaning to follow this up. They were recently talking about this on the arraycast and it feels like a fun intersection of interests. Also glad to see this hit hn otherwise it would have been pushed of my proverbial stack
bjconlan··on Ask HN: Why would you ever use C++ for a new project over Rust?
Yes, this is all very interesting, I've found golang is significantly simpler to get up to speed on from a c-family based education (c/c++/java) so I'm curious if these teams were both proficient before starting the projects. (And 3rd party package comparisons come into play). Either way enough to keep an ear out as I'm sure with the wealth of python & js developers the language of choice will be promoted by their experiences/evolution (so suspect mojo will also be something to keep an eye on)

(Notably I've gone through this evaluation recently and landed on implementing my personal project in c++23 (using cosmopolitan if possible) mostly for the value of updating my c++ knowledge (and perhaps look into cuda))

bjconlan··on Overlay networks based on WebRTC
I'm curious as to why? Introduce difficulty to promote some ICE holepunching access to the device?
bjconlan··on Shattered Pixel Dungeon is an open-source traditional roguelike dungeon crawler
Yeah, I was looking though the code wondering what java based rendering library this was using but all of these support classes come from "PD-classes" (which was sighted in the SPD readme... just never joined the dots) but also pointed me to the creators itch account and relevant "Generator" artworks which are all very impressive

https://watabou.github.io/ https://watabou.itch.io/

Some really great work here

bjconlan··on Apollo calls AI a 'bubble' worse than even the dotcom era
You're not accommodating that the value of people /mechanical turks can be adjusted to perhaps a value lower than this in some regions... This obviously will put downward pressure on all regions... Except perhaps the people who serve said services (not specifically Nvidia). If anything this plays into OpenAI's/Sam's goal of creating an AI-hardware fab (and with the current market valuations he'll probably get what he needs to do it)

Mind you my personal perspective orients towards the opinion that tech companies do lead the markets more than others through metrics I can't personally rationalise but it's something we all seem to agree with (and I'm ok with if my superannuation/401k is always growing)
