bitsoda··on Apple and MLS to present all MLS matches for 10 years, beginning in 2023
This is such an intelligent move, and one I've been secretly hoping Apple would make: get the streaming rights to a league that's "up and coming" and very popular with a younger demographic for what I assume is a bargain compared to most other top leagues. Sure, it's not the NFL or NBA, but it's a great addition nonetheless. This is an insta-subscribe for me.
bitsoda··on Ask HN: What's the coolest website you know?
As a geopgraphy nerd, I appreciate playing around with https://www.thetruesize.com/
bitsoda··on A Note About Today’s Wordle Game
> We’re now busy revamping Wordle’s technology so that everyone always receives the same word. We are committed to ensuring that tens of millions of people have a gratifying and consistent experience, every day.

I wonder how much longer until the NYT requires a free account to play Wordle as a way to gently nudge more players into opting for a NYT Games subscription down the road? At this point, I wouldn't mind if it meant my stats/progress were written to a database that I could access from any browser.

Ultimately, they shelled out the money and it's their game now. I think they've done a decent job with it, and am glad to have found Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, and the Mini Crossword along the way.

bitsoda··on Waymo begins driverless rides in San Francisco
Do you live in a place with weather? I think we'll get there eventually, but my timeline is closer to 20 years. I just don't see AVs nailing that last 1% for true peace of mind in places like the Eastern USA with torrential downpours in South Florida or snow and icy conditions in New England.

I hope I'm wrong though, I would prefer it if my kids and other road users didn't have to drive.

bitsoda··on Tolkien's Paintings
I had no idea he was so prolific outside of writing. It makes me wonder how much I would create if my only media access was radio and lived in a world with far fewer distractions. Then again, everything's relative and there exist many creators today whose genius doesn't seem to be diminished by all our screens.

Curse you, internet addiction!

bitsoda··on Growing a mango tree from seed – one year time lapse [video]
Come to South Florida. The variety of delicious tropical fruits is dizzying.
bitsoda··on Winamp
Yeah it's pretty dark. The scrolling appears to be time-based. After you spend x milliseconds on a section, it'll let you move onto the next with any scroll event.
bitsoda··on Show HN: I built a no-BS recipe search engine
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing this. I could grok this one much more easily than the other algorithm.
bitsoda··on Allbirds S-1 IPO
I hope they stay in business for a long time. Not to sound like a shill or anything, but their shoes are some of the most comfy I've tried. I pretty much wear them to the office every day. Are there more comfortable shoes out there? I don't know, probably, but I'm a happy Allbirds customer all the same.
bitsoda··on Hurricane Ida could be close to Cat 4, dump up to 20“ of rain in S.E. Louisiana
I'm not saying some areas don't suffer huge losses and this might be a bit of survivorship bias, but living in Miami for 35 years, homes built from cinderblock with roofs secured with hurricane straps -- which have been part of the building code for 30+ years now -- don't really see much damage other than the odd missing roof tile and maybe a bit of water intrusion from the wind, but it's not as dramatic as the media portrays it in _most_ areas.

I'd say the major threats are fallen power lines, downed trees, and CO poisoning from generator misuse. We'll get routine summer monsoons that bring more damage than some category 1 hurricanes at times, so unless it's a direct hit from a major hurricane I try not to panic too much so long as we have supplies.

bitsoda··on Welcoming our first riders in San Francisco
I'm happy for their efforts and hope my kids never have to drive unless they want to, but I still think we're 20+ years out from level 4+ autonomy. Maybe when Waymo tests in a city that has weather -- like anywhere in the Northeast -- I'll be more enthusiastic.
bitsoda··on Tesla AI Day [video]
The whole presentation is basically a recruiting event.
bitsoda··on It’s official: July was Earth’s hottest month on record
Thanks, I see this occasionally in South Florida, but never knew there was a term for it. If it were me I'd have pulled over my bike for 10 minutes and waited for the air to clear. I'll never understand the motivations of some people...

Keep an eye on Ben Brode's scrappy new studio, Second Dinner.
bitsoda··on Google Offices to Mandate Vaccines
That tiny bit of room for doubt is still much smaller than that for the virus itself.

For example, once you get over chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your nerve cells and could rear its head in the form of shingles later on in life. Who knows what long-term effects COVID will have? History shows for the overwhelming amount of vaccines no random side-effects after ~3 months.

There are outliers, of course, but since Delta looks like it will makes its rounds and infect many people, it's not quite the same in terms of anthrax exposure which is why I'm cool with Google mandating the COVID vaccine from a risk/benefit perspective.

bitsoda··on Vaccines and our return to office plans
Nah, airborne viruses affect the community so you can't leave it up to personal preference. It's similar to how a house fire can spread to neighboring houses regardless of the homeowner's preference to have it put out or not.

For example, in my area two years ago, measles made a return because of anti-vaxxer Facebook mommy groups. I needed to bring my days-old infant to the pediatrician for checkups all the while knowing measles lingers in the air for two hours and a pediatrician's office is the most likely place to harbor the virus. Fun times as a parent and a big shout out to all the selfish people endangering newborns with literally no immune system based on junk "science" when the facts are overwhelmingly clear in favor of vaccines.

bitsoda··on Safari 15 on Mac OS, a user interface mess
To a certain extent. If you show too much content at the expense of navigation you simply make your app harder to use. There’s a sweet spot in the UX bell curve and I feel like the new Safari missed the mark. Although, the iOS version looks like an upgrade for one handed use.

bitsoda··on The Ponzi Career
I figured as much, but was surprised by the 30% figure. I always assumed a tax rate of > 40% to support those social programs and benefits.
bitsoda··on The Ponzi Career
Which country is this? 30% seems reasonable for all that.
bitsoda··on Chia Blockchain mainnet successfully launched today at 14:00 UTC
Ha, sadly my measly k32 plot is saying I'll win a block in 8 months. Still, it's a promising alternative to the Bitcoin blockchain. I think this might actually go somewhere. Their GUI is wonderful and dead simple to use.
bitsoda··on Amsterdam displaces London as Europe's top stocks centre after Brexit
Your theory jibes with my own account at the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam. I asked one of the tour guides if he was an American expat, and told me he just watched a lot of “Full House” growing up as a kid.
bitsoda··on How bad is your Spotify?
"Your spotify was midwestern-stoner-potty-training-baby-shark-prison bad."

As a 35 y/o with a toddler I'd say they nailed it.

bitsoda··on eBird: A crowdsourced bird sighting database
Pretty sure that comment was made in jest...
bitsoda··on iOS 14 is available today
Apple seems to be at least 3 hours behind schedule as there's no sign of it here on the East Coast, yet.
bitsoda··on Moving from YouTube to PeerTube
I've noticed this too. If there's one thing that'll get me to kick my YouTube addiction, it'll be the increased ads. If it gets any worse, I think I'd rather read a book or just go to sleep earlier -- not a bad thing, really.
bitsoda··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit on mobile so obsessed with making me use their app?
Narwhal is criminally underrated. It's so fast and fluid, and you always have access to subreddits by swiping from the right. Apollo is good, but Narwhal deserves more love IMO.
bitsoda··on Where Am I? NYTimes or Google?
For real. For the most part I love all things Google, but AMP makes my blood boil. How does it save me any time when I have to tap that little ‘i’ to get to the original website through all that janky scrolling? Ugh, infuriating. I feel like a walrus on a tar floor maneuvering through AMP pages. What an awful piece of technology.
