bithush··on Why is Docker the new craze in virtualization and cloud computing?
Because Docker just makes more sense. Why should I run multiple versions of the whole OS for near-to-identical setups? That is just a waste of resources. Docker makes much more sense when you have multiple applications you want in separate instances on the same stack. There benefits far outweigh the disadvantages in my experience.
bithush··on The Best Programming Font: M+
A little too thin for my tastes. I quite like Consolas or good old Courier New. To me the font width isn't all that important compared to the font height as I am not pressed for width but an extra couple of lines visible vertically is almost always wanted. Consolas is a nice balance at 11pt.
bithush··on Atom Now Available on Windows
Makes sense. Thanks for your time on the builds until now.
bithush··on The Next Big Programming Language You’ve Never Heard Of
They got it wrong, the next big language is obviously Limbo![0]

bithush··on Google Has Given HTTPS a Huge Boost
Am I the only one who finds it a little funny that the link in this post is to http and not https ? :)

bithush··on Inspecting Yosemite's Icons
I am not an icon or graphics expert but in my layman's opinion Apple always have such beautiful icons. One of my little hates about Windows is how Microsoft are lazy at things such as icons. We have a mixture of new and old icons all through the system and it makes things look ugly. Shame really as it really cannot be that difficult to spend some time making things look consistent and nice. Oh well maybe in Windows 9 ;)
bithush··on Open-source Libraries for Working with Open XML Documents (docx, xlsx, pptx)
This is obviously great but I find it annoying the instructions ask your to Set-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted in order to run the PowerShell script. That is just lazy.
bithush··on Google I/O 2014
The new keyboard is beautiful.
bithush··on How to balance health issues with being a founder?
Your health should always be your number one priority. You can always do another start up. You can always earn more money. What you can't do is get back your time and your health back.

It is a very difficult thing to do but you need to look at yourself and honestly answer this question: If I don't put my health in the number one spot where will I be in a year? 2 years? 5 years? 10 years?

If this were a technical problem with your game you would search for a solution. Do the same for your health!

You did not say where you live other than it is winter so the southern hemisphere. I am going to guess an Asian or South American country from your comments about restricted health care and lack of safe place to exercise. Please correct if I am wrong.

You need to get this shit sorted though. Even if that means ditching your start up and getting a regular job. You said you had a higher paying job before your degree? Can you go back to that job or similar? Do you get any kind of private healthcare with such a job?

I know you are in a financially difficult position but every penny you put into anything but your health is almost certainly a penny wrongly spent at the moment. Yes you might get lucky and hit gold and have all the money you need to get better but you can't bet your health on a hail Mary like that. You said you are young? If so you have a lot of life left (if you sort your health out) to do a start-up. Maybe now is not the right time. A start up is killer even for someone in excellent health so doing one in poor health is almost a guarantee for disaster.

If I were in your position I would do the following

* Research everything you can about your specific thyroid problem. Get as much information as you can about it from your doctor and search the hell out of it. Treat it like a bug and research, research, research!

* Use your research to find the right drugs and then look at how to source them. There is loads of solid, medical advice on free resources online such as the NHS websites which you should be able to access without any problem. Getting the medicine may be the hardest part but thyroid medication should not be all that hard to get as it is not a controlled substance as far as I am aware (I could be wrong where you live obviously).

* Get your diet sorted. Have a consistent meal and exercise plan. Weight loss is more about diet than exercise so eat right. You said you can lose weight but put it back on quickly. That is normal! A solid, prolonged change to your diet will keep the weight coming off and staying off. I know the thyroid problem makes this harder but it has to be done.

* Find somewhere you can exercise. There will be somewhere unless you really do live in an awful place.

* Look online for cheap glasses or contact lenses. You can get very cheap glasses these days.

* How much will a dentist cost? Look at your finances and work out how long it will take you to safe for the treatment.

* Have you got family or friends who can help you? Maybe you could live with friends to reduce rent costs? Do some simple work freelance?

I hope that helps a bit. I really can't stress just how much your health is the most important thing though. Excuse my language but fuck your start up if you are not healthy. There is nothing to gain from having a successful start-up if you are in poor health and cannot enjoy the success. You need to have a seriously look at your priorities and if a start-up is the right thing for you right now.

bithush··on Introducing Swift
Yes it is available at https://developer.apple.com/library/prerelease/ios/documenta...
bithush··on AdBlock Plus’s effect on Firefox’s memory usage
My primary computer is a laptop from 2008 with a 2.5Ghz Core 2 Duo and other than a 1 second delay in startup I don't notice any performance degradation in general use compared to running without ABP.

Currently this machine has been up for 3 days and 17 hours and Firefox has been running the whole time and it is using 303MB with 4 tabs open one of which is the Daily Mail (don't judge!) which is an extremely busy page. This is perfectly acceptable in my opinion. I only have 4GB RAM which by todays standards in not much either. Obviously reducing the memory footprint is great but I can't say it has ever been a problem I have ever noticed.

On a side note the past few updates to Firefox have improved performance a lot. I am really impressed by how much quicker the browser is, especially with Chrome seeming to just get slower and slower with each update.

bithush··on Computers are fast
Shows how excited they were. I always like to see blog posts where the poster is excited about the post!
bithush··on Computers are fast
Depends if that 0.1 seconds is going to add up to a very significant amount. Obviously these are just tests but in a production system running 24/7 that 0.1 seconds per run is going to add up to a lot. The code might be ugly but that is when comments are most important.
bithush··on What Happened at NewsGator
I remember when NewsGator bought FeedDemon, my RSS reader of choice on Windows. I was a little nervous but it went ok, for a while anyway. FeedDemon came to end-of-like quite naturally I feel. RSS just sort of died off for me the same way I think it did for many others. I think the problem with RSS is the information overload and addiction to more information. It just all gets too much once you hit a certain number of feeds. Now I don't use RSS for anything, at least not knowingly.
bithush··on New dev release of Sublime Text 3
As a paying customer I do expect support and that includes at least a brief explanation as to what is happening with the product in the longer term. A tweet. A simple one line update on the website. A forum post. Any of those would be fine even if, like you said, it is just to say "I am burnt out, I am taking 2014 off". I am disappointed that if he has returned to work on the project that we just get a silent new dev build without any kind of information about the future.
bithush··on 37 percent of adults cannot swim the length of a 25-yard pool
As a regular white 30 year old guy from the UK I find it so strange that so many people don't know how to swim. I know it is a common (American-centric) stereotype that black persons do not know how to swim and generally hate water but all of my black friends swim just fine and find the stereotype kind of strange too. Seriously swimming isn't that hard people and it is a skill that could very easily safe your life.
bithush··on Another Big Milestone for Servo: Acid2
With the bad press Mozilla has had the past few weeks it is easy for people to forget about some of the awesome things Mozilla are working on such as Rust and Servo. I really like the look of Rust and feel it might be the future native language for high performance applications. It is very exciting!
