bitdeveloper··on Review: The NES Classic Edition and all 30 games on it
I think it's nice to have a Thing That Just Works once in a while. I never use consoles (my ps4 sits unused) because every time I turn it on, I have to mess with updates and stuff. I just want to turn something on, play it for 10 minutes, and stop. This will be perfect for me.
bitdeveloper··on More Details Emerge About the Soylent Food Bars Making People Sick
Why? Peanuts make some people violently ill too.
bitdeveloper··on Laravel Spark 1.0 is now available
Has anyone seen in the documentation how they are handling pricing in the long term? I.e., if $299 is for the lifetime of 1.0 releases/upgrades, or something else?
bitdeveloper··on Show HN: Painless1099 – automated self-employment taxes
This looks interesting.

Can you go into a little detail about how well you currently cover state taxes vs. federal, quarterly payments, etc? The service I currently use doesn't really help much on the state level.

bitdeveloper··on Opt Out From Online Behavioral Advertising By Participating Companies
I think it has to do with the fact that the government can imprison you years, or for life. Even if you were breaking a law on accident, or unknowingly.

It's a matter of power imbalance.

bitdeveloper··on The Big Alien Theory
I'm unclear on why the author posits that we should assume a smaller population necessarily means the average being will be larger.

For example, if a human did this thought experiment 2000 years ago - a blink of the eye in the scale we are talking about - we would have perhaps 500,000,000 humans on the planet, or something along those lines. We have 14x as many humans now.

Yet we have not shrunk in size as the species has grown in population, and if anything, have grown larger.

If we look at the total biomass on earth, we are a fairly small portion of it. So shouldn't we assume, as we are assuming our situation is average, that intelligent aliens are also a fairly small portion of their planet's biomass? And if so, wouldn't the size of the aliens themselves be something that has very little to do with the total energy reaching the planet surface?

I get that it's just statistical probability and math, and it's fun, but this particular thing stuck out for me.

It was a fun read regardless, so thank you for the break from work!

bitdeveloper··on Amazon’s Echo Brims with Groundbreaking Promise
For an elderly woman with poor eyesight, a fixed location landline that never needs updating or maintenance is probably preferred over an easily lost phone that needs to get plugged in, updated, etc.
bitdeveloper··on How to Pass a Programming Interview
There are a lot of people who leverage their CS degrees for non programming jobs - anything from QA, to Product Management, to Sales Engineering. Please don't discount the value of your degree so easily! It's not a waste - you will find a way to leverage it in a related field.

There is a real need for people who understand programming, even if they aren't heads-down, programming geniuses themselves.

bitdeveloper··on OneOps – Open-source cloud ops platform from Walmart
"Accelerating product delivery in the Digital Economy through Continuous Application Lifecycle Management of Cloud-based Workload, backed by @WalmartLabs"

I think you could work on that elevator pitch a little - it seems like it's been workshopped by a committee, and doesn't really tell me anything.

bitdeveloper··on Buddybuild: Build, deploy and gather feedback for iOS and Android apps
I just tried this out for my first iOS app. Very cool stuff. Your demo and on-boarding process is very smooth.

Just a little feedback - I was hesitant to sign up because I didn't want to love it and find out it is out of my range price-wise. When I saw your comment about it being free for indie developers, hobbyists, and open source, that's when I decided to sign up. My general impression with SaaS has often been that "No price listed" means "This is for enterprise, and you can't afford it." So you may want to consider saying something about your future pricing plans/tiers, even if you can't really nail it down right now.

bitdeveloper··on Agate: A Data Analysis Library for Journalists
I'd throw history into the ring for something that would be similar in variety of sources, types of data, etc.

I'm looking forward to checking out the library!

bitdeveloper··on Show HN: Continuo, a simple activity tracker for iPhone
Hah! That does it. I have just lost my developer card I guess. Thanks jen729w.
bitdeveloper··on Show HN: Continuo, a simple activity tracker for iPhone
I can't seem to get past the blue landing page that says

CONTINUO

on it. Server issues?

I like the screenshots, and look forward to trying it out.

I'm on an iphone 5, btw.

bitdeveloper··on Ask HN: Do you work with dogmatic, stubborn developers/sysadmins? Are YOU one?
If you are the one getting a call at 3am when something breaks, your opinion _should_ matter more than someone else's.

Also, I find it strange that you put "the right technical decision" in quotes here. Are you thinking of specific instances where (perhaps) you didn't understand why someone was being stubborn about a choice, so you didn't value their stubbornness? Maybe their reasoning is sound, but their articulation of the reasoning could have been better.

People who insist on 'their way' for no reason are one thing. People who insist on the right way, because they have dealt with a lot of problems in their careers from doing things the wrong way, are another. The first is a detriment, and the second is an asset. You have to be able to tell the difference.

But if you're dealing with people who are being difficult for the sake of being difficult, that really does suck.
