bitboxer··on A screaming-fast PC changed my life. It will change yours, too
He ment that the customer who uses his web page has an outdated computer.
bitboxer··on Misunderstanding the Knuth premature optimization quote
Lol. Service Unavailable...Knuth really was wrong. This server should be premature optimized for hacker news :D .
bitboxer··on How Facebook Scales with Open Source
Isn't it funny that this is posted on the day that facebook has huge stability problems :) ?
bitboxer··on Jeff Jarvis on How Google Makes the Germans Go Bonkers
But why isn't there much fight against Swift, the telecommunications data retention and other stuff?

I don't understand that...those issues are way more important than google street view.

bitboxer··on Ask HN: Is there a good startup for divers?
Yeah. I am wondering why I can't find one. Isn't this an obvious idea?
bitboxer··on Why You Should Switch to the Dvorak Keyboard Layout
I am aware of that. Can somebody please pinpoint the errors or show articles that explain where the writer has done errors? I am curious if it will be worth to switch, but I need some facts first :) .
bitboxer··on Why You Should Switch to the Dvorak Keyboard Layout
I thought it is proven that dvorak is not superior :

http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/01/18/210216

Is there something wrong with that article/research?

bitboxer··on Using = Considered Harmful (or, What’s Wrong With =)
Somehow the title is wrong. Maybe bad escaping of ">" ?

Original Title: Using >= Considered Harmful (or, What’s Wrong With >=)

bitboxer··on Coming home to Vim
Please try command-t.vim instead. That Article is from 2008 :)
bitboxer··on Ask HN: What Vim Plugins do you use?
Btw here is my list:

* pathogen : install plugins in seperate directories

* NERD_tree : Tree navigation

* NERD_commenter: Comment/uncomment lines. File type agnostic

* Rename : Rename file in buffer

* Ack : Search using ack not grep

* Command-T : Fuzzy find files in path * Rails.vim : shortcuts to open models, controllers and other ruby on rails related stuff

* snipMate : Textmate like snipplet funktion

* surround : Add, change or delete surroundings

bitboxer··on The Great Vim / Textmate Debate: Opinion #56 - How to make Vim more accessible
More and more people are switching to Vim at the moment. Especially in the Ruby On Rails community.
bitboxer··on Geddy - A modular web framework for node.js
I would love to see a comparison and details what framework to use when. I can't decide, as well.

Someone with more insights reading this?

bitboxer··on Ask HN: What is the best city to start a start-up in Europe?
Than pick the european cities from that thread :) .
bitboxer··on Ask HN: How would you store 5TB of data for 50 years, untouched?
No, it won't. Some CDs from the early 90ies are not playable anymore because the foil that stores the data is damaged through aging processes. DVDs and hard drives have similar problems and won't last longer than 5-15 years if you are not lucky.
bitboxer··on Vim and I and what my ideal Editor would look like
Sorry, that sentence was wrong. I corrected it. The list is not a list of missing things. It is a list of things I want in my ideal editor.

And to copy and paste: yy and P are not what someone would expect when starting a text editor. Shift+Cursor to select text, Cmd+c/Cmd+p to copy/paste, Cmd/z to undo. Those are the system defaults on my Mac and my editor should use the same keyboard shortcuts.

bitboxer··on Vim and I and what my ideal Editor would look like
I tried Emacs last year. And yes, with CUA mode. And I didn't like it. MacVim feels a lot better and more natural to me. Even with the copy and paste problem.

Yeah...a HN Cologne Meetup would be great!

Muenster is one of the cities with the most raining days in germany. Still nearly everyone drives by bike. There is no such thing as bad weather. Only bad choice in clothing :).
bitboxer··on In German Suburb, Life Goes On Without Cars (2009)
Same can be said about cars :) .
bitboxer··on In German Suburb, Life Goes On Without Cars (2009)
I knew a guy who biked 50 Miles to work and showered at work. Everything is doable :) .

A few friends of me bike in spain during the summer. You see, it can be done. All that's needed is a small shower at work and you are even fresher than by driving with your car. And sweating in the rush hour.

If you drive more than 20 Miles you can't go by bike, yes, but you can drive shopping or to your friend by bike. Try to use it to go to the nearest pub on weekends.

Just try it :) .

bitboxer··on In German Suburb, Life Goes On Without Cars (2009)
I lived in Münster, Germany for a few years. Münster is THE bike town in germany. Statistically every citizen has 1.8 bikes. And i begann to love biking there. A lot is done in that city to make biking the #1 way of transportation. Now I am living in Cologne, Germany and see the difference. I miss the good bike lanes but I kept biking in cologne.

Nothing is better for your head than biking a few miles home after a hard day of work.

bitboxer··on Ask HN: Best Startup City - Outside the USA?
And you can't compare WW2 Numbers with today. A lot has happend since than.
bitboxer··on Ask HN: Best Startup City - Outside the USA?
And besides of the low cost the atmosphere in the city is great. A lot of art and music people from whole europe move to berlin now to feel the vibe of the city. Visit berlin for a week and you will love it :)

Nearly everyone is able to speak english.

Small disclaimer: I am living in cologne, germany

bitboxer··on Ask HN: Best Startup City - Outside the USA?
Berlin has a lot of unrented office space. Sometimes in bad shape, but a weekend of painting and you have a nice office. Berlin is cheaper than other german cities because of many reasons. One is the high unemployment rate compared to other german cities.
bitboxer··on Ask HN: Best Startup City - Outside the USA?
Berlin, Germany. Tons of startups, low costs for renting.
