bitboxer··on Ruby vs. Python
Hehe...thanks :) .
bitboxer··on Ruby vs. Python
From : https://www.djangoproject.com/weblog/2012/aug/19/experimenta...

> Does this mean that Django is ready to use with Python 3? Not yet!

Yes, there are devs/companies embracing python 3, but not enough :( . As I said in my article a few people think it would be better to throw python 3 away. I don't understand why.

bitboxer··on Ask HN: what jars do you use on your android projects?
But there is a maven dependency available. I haven't used this, but what exactly is the problem when you can even use maven to load the file?

And do you know more libs are important? Please post them all to give me a possiblitiy to analyze them all.

bitboxer··on In wich I rant about developing on Android
I am currently prototyping a jar dependency solution that could help my workflow and looks similar to cocoapods, but on top of Maven and Android repository xmls.

See here:

https://gist.github.com/3603015

If you think that can be improved, add your comments to that gist.

And if you have a list of common used maven or android repos, just post them there, too.

Please help!

bitboxer··on In wich I rant about developing on Android
Btw: Thanks for those links. I now have a working ant setup. I will now have to tweak a few things in my vim to autocompile the R file and stuff :) .
bitboxer··on In wich I rant about developing on Android
Is there an index somewhere that has a list of all libs that have a proper repository.xml? It would be great to have something like rubygems or cocoapods where you can search for all options you have for that problem you are facing.
bitboxer··on In wich I rant about developing on Android
Can you blog or link to an example on your ant setup? I am really interested in that one. And how do you manage dependencies to third party jars with the sdk manager?
bitboxer··on In wich I rant about developing on Android
Nope, I don't dislike Java. I was the project lead of a "TV-Browser", an Java Swing GUI that is used by over 100.000 Users. You can't do that if you hate Java ;).

A broken GUI editor can't be a personal preference ;).

bitboxer··on Terminal, can I haz nice welcome image?
Or you could fork a process that downloads the image you are showing on the next time and show the last downloaded one directly to the console. That way the terminal start up will stay fast and you will get a new image on each new terminal :)
bitboxer··on My experiences at a woman's programming workshop
That bully is a reason why on railsgirls events you have tables for differen skill levels. You could easily send that guy to another table with more advanced people without throwing him out.
bitboxer··on Play Wolfenstein 3D in a browser
The site IS banning german users. I see a fat warning info screen instead of the game.
bitboxer··on Goodbye Yahoo, Hello Bootstrap and Backbone.
Sorry, but your site has serious problems. Just adding Bootstrap without any knowledge of at least some basic designs does you no good.

For example:

* The text is wider than the screen and the scrolling destroys the readability of the text. Even when it would fit the screen, it makes a terrible reading experience

* Apply paddings to the left and right edge of the screen. If the text touches the browser window, it looks ugly and removes focus and call to action on it.

As a final advice: get yourself a copy of Design for Hackers ( http://bitboxer.de/2012/02/05/design-for-hackers-reverse-eng... )

bitboxer··on Stop sending .DOC files as mail attachments There is a better way
Yes, those could go as attachment, but I would strongly advise a workflow system that keeps track of changes and other stuff. Email is very troublesome for that. One changes something, another one sends an old version and that change is lost...I am working in the print industrie for a decade now and have moved a few companies from email workflows to a decent workflow web based system. It is way better. Trust me :) .

But most of the stuff I get is normal text that could easily fit into the email itself. Some people sent 1-sentence doc attachements regularly :( .

bitboxer··on Stop sending .DOC files as mail attachments There is a better way
Or even better: just send the damn text WITHIN the actual email. You know, just how sane people do this :) .
bitboxer··on How I survived one week without an adblocker
There are data protection laws in lots of countries. It's written into law.
bitboxer··on How I survived one week without an adblocker
That is the manual approach the Adblock Plus had, too. But I have added a nice gui method for that in my fork :) . In my fork you can simply click on the adblock plus icon in the url bar and activate the adblocker for that site. Behind the scene that will add the site to the list you show in that options screen.
bitboxer··on How I survived one week without an adblocker
Yes, an information for site owners why they are blocked would be great. But I don't know how we could implement this in a good way. If someone has Ideas in this direction I would love to hear them!
bitboxer··on Pirate Party Germany gets into the parliament for the state of Berlin
To be fair that was only one member and that member has been thrown out of the party a long time ago.
bitboxer··on ‘Reply above this line’ culture must die
I worked in a M$-Shop for a long time. It was a huge problem there because Ms Outlook didn't do inline correctly. The inline text was in another color. And using a Linux Client you could only get the plaintext version without the color in it :( .

Basically I had to use a VM just to understand the mail correctly.

bitboxer··on Show HN: calendar for hackers in cologne, germany
This is a calendar with all relevant events for hackers in cologne. Sorry that it's in german :) .

We need help in adding new features and (obviously) in improving the design :) .

If you know an event that is missing, feel free to send a mail.

bitboxer··on GitHub, Collaboration, and Haters
Sourceforge had his time. As MySpace had his time, too. They where cool a few years ago and where the best thing that could happen to the internet, but we moved away from those for better solutions. Solutions that weren't possible without those sites. I am very thankfull that Sourceforge existed. I hosted my first projects there, too.

Good bye and please stop crying like a baby about the hate you are getting. You have two options: make your site as easy to use as github or continue dying. Crying publicly is none of those :) .

bitboxer··on Naked Emperors: where are all the connected people?
Someone is bashing the facebook numbers and just discovered Linkedin?! Lol.

BUT I think the numbers tend to be correct. A lot of my non tech friends here in germany are now on facebook. I only know 3 guys that are not on it. And they are not on it because of privacy concerns. And I even saw parents organizing their school board meetings through it.

Very scary thought to see that Facebook got so huge, but you can't say the numbers are wrong. At least not as wrong as the poster tries to make them.

bitboxer··on Help a german hacker plan a road trip on the east coast via github
Please help me in making my road trip on the east coast a great trip. If you know some things I have to do, please send me an email or fork the repo!

Thanks!

bitboxer··on Watch music videos in style
If your're in Germany, try our neat little site: http://putpat.tv . Can be found ipad and on latest samsung tvs, too.

bitboxer··on Ask HN: How to start creating stuff with Arduino?
I think it's more rewarding to have a little success right at the beginning. Going through tons of concepts at first demotivates very fast. Especially if you want to teach this stuff to kids :) . Concepts can be learned after the first success and slowly you know everything.
bitboxer··on Ask HN: How to start creating stuff with Arduino?
It's easier to start with a board that is ready for you to use. Hook it onto a usb port, start the app and add everything you want to build on a breadboard. No soldering no nothing. From 0 to blinking LEDs in 5 Minutes.
bitboxer··on Ask HN: How to start creating stuff with Arduino?
Thanks! Great link with tons of details.
bitboxer··on Ask HN: How to start creating stuff with Arduino?
It's targeted at Beginners (Developers and Artists) who want to start getting into creating electronic stuff. And it's great for that target audience (including me ;) ).
bitboxer··on Ask HN: How to start creating stuff with Arduino?
This is good. Teaching about electronics with adruino. Exactly what I needed.
bitboxer··on (Windows) Move the Firefox or Chrome cache to a RAM disk and speed up surfing
Sorry, but this is stupid. Your Os already caches files in your ram. No need for a Ram Disk.
