biscottigelato··on AI Is Useful for Capitalists but Probably Terrible for Anyone Else
Counter big AI with big government. Dystopian hellscape.
biscottigelato··on AI Is Useful for Capitalists but Probably Terrible for Anyone Else
Becareful of regulatory capture tho. If the one with AI headstart can capture a huge swath of value, said value can be used to lobby and bribe legislators or the executives of the government.

There's no good way to put the AI genie back in the bottle, or make sure it will not create catastrophic undesired consequences. Only way is forward, even if there is no good path in sight.

Potentially, wouldn't star systems have planets where their orbital planes are at positions that we cannot observe transit event from? In fact, most planets?
biscottigelato··on I was laid off 2 months ago and I’ve never even seen a severance letter
Scrutiny is fine. But how does saying "He's bipolar and just want attention" or "Second coming of Trump" add anything to the conversation?

His intention was very clear to anyone that paid attention. Jordan Peterson was banned. Babylon Bee was banned. Sitting president was banned. An election swaying story was completely suppressed. There's only 1 side of the COVID conversation. Whether you think that's okay or not that's on you. But a lot of people are not okay with it, and one of them happens to be Elon.

Yes he made a bad offer and the market crashed and he was stuck with it. Seems pretty logical to me. Nothing to do with attention seeking. And even he himself admits he f'cked up if not at least on the pricing and terms. So he's a rash crummy negotiator. But its not SpaceX rocket science what happened here.

More logical than calling everything 'QAnon' and not able to add anything constructive to the discourse.

biscottigelato··on What would a decentralised Uber look like?
I am a big Bitcoin guy. But I cringe everytime someone yell 'blockchain' as if that somehow equals to decentralization automatically

BitTorrent is almost as decentralized as it gets. It has no blockchain.

I don't have all the answers. But my guess is the crux in decentralizing ride sharing is reputation portability. Probably need a DID and a way to accumulate attestations, ideally directly from riders, in a fashion that the driver owns it, cannot be censored but also cannot be faked. Once that part is in place the rest is just commodity app type of deal.

biscottigelato··on Why Solana was decimated by Bankman-Fried’s downfall
Bitcoin is used increasingly as a tool against French colonial CFA Franc in Africa. A lifeline to access the outside financial world for citizens of countries under sanction. https://iharare.com/african-countries-are-no-strangers-to-th...

Everything else is garbage I agree

If you don't count Bitcoin that's true.

biscottigelato··on Why Solana was decimated by Bankman-Fried’s downfall
There's no coin that have gained ground against Bitcoin after their first cycle ATH against Bitcoin. Not even Ethereum.

You basically have to gamble on a coin that have never been seen in a Bull market. Otherwise Bitcoin is always the better bet.

biscottigelato··on Washington Needs a Crypto Rethink
Exactly. All one needs to do is just to buy Bitcoin and hold it yourself. Everything else is noise at best, scam at worse, including the fiat banking system once it unpegged from its gold backing.
biscottigelato··on Washington Needs a Crypto Rethink
From my understanding SBF was lobbying AGAINST DeFi. And lobbying for as many crypto as possible to be considered commodities instead of securities.

He was definitely not lobbying for more oversights in centralized industry players.

To be fair, there are already sufficient law and power to use against centralized industry players. It's not going to help when SEC rather go after the Kardashians and then mingle with SBF himself right after. Laws are not the problem. Using existing laws fairly and evenly instead of selectively towards all players. That's the problem.

Full OFAC compliance. Cantillionism. These possibilities excites me. Things that Bitcoin cannot and will never be able to do.

biscottigelato··on Status vs. Wealth: Why the Rich Don't Act Rich
Exactly. Viewing status acquisition as worthless assumes that people do not want social attachment and that social standing within groups or society doesn't matter. I'd argue they matter more, and wealth is actually just the mean to this end.
biscottigelato··on Status vs. Wealth: Why the Rich Don't Act Rich
Me creating a self-driving car will take away revenue from drivers. However the rest of society will gain much more than the loss that the drivers suffers. On net humanity is better off.

This is true when the computer replaced secretaries, when cars replaced the horse, when planes replaced the boats, internet replaced fax and phone calls, etc. Overall the quality of life of everyone improved even if a select few suffered each time progress was made, making even fewer rich, but everyone else better off.

You create wealth by providing value to others, value that exceeds the competition you have displaced. That's why wealth creation is a positive sum game.

biscottigelato··on Status vs. Wealth: Why the Rich Don't Act Rich
The hardest part of social status is respect of others in high social standing. Looks gets you the opposite sex, and having access, perhaps even sharing that circle, gains you respect. Nothing else really matters in the status game except respect.
biscottigelato··on Status vs. Wealth: Why the Rich Don't Act Rich
Building companies are not necessarily zero sum tho. You can win over your competition by delivering value. The value delivered to society generally more than cover of the loss your competition encounters. On net its a positive sum game that the more this is done, the more net positive society sees.

Assuming fair competition based on innovation on efficiency of course. Corruption and coercion not apply

biscottigelato··on Status vs. Wealth: Why the Rich Don't Act Rich
But friends or romantic partner is actually what's important in life. Wealth is just a number on a ledger. We can debate whether friends gained through status or partners gained through status are ideal friends or ideal partners. But its undeniable that friends and romantic partner is much more important to life than wealth.

Hunter Biden laptop that the FBI have confirmed real Banning Andrew Tate when Pierce Morgan and many others think he is opinionated but should not be banned.

And hell they banned Jordan Peterson?

I don't know what kinda echo chamber you operate in to think the 'left' is not 'trying to influence communication platforms'

biscottigelato··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
People just don't know Musk. Falcon Heavy was delayed for 8 years. It took 8 years longer. He still got it to work. With all 3 rockets landing simultaneously at the same time.

SpaceX also beat Boeing with a smaller budget (NASA gave more to Boeing) in sending astronauts to the ISS. Boeing still is not able to get a successful test launch 2 years after SpaceX got the first astronauts to ISS from US domestic soil.

Then there's Tesla, where the Model Y, despite being double the price of a Corolla, outsold the Corolla - https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2022/10/tesla-model-y-passing-...

If you can stumble into so many achievements by luck. Or just by oh, lean on a few Shotwells and engineers.... then why are companies like Meta and Snap etc in the trash bin? Why is Boeing still stuck on the ground? Why after a half a decade of Tesla killers than nobody is getting killed but legacy automakers (all declining revenue and deliveries).

biscottigelato··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Falcon Heavy was delayed for 8 years. Launching another one and simultaneously landing 3 rockets there after.

Hard stuff takes time. People with no patience and perseverance never gets big stuff done. Musk is not the same.

biscottigelato··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
SpaceX has no public equities and has no problem attracting talent.

You guys are really thinking Musk is some bozos that have never done anything in his life. Its quite incredible. Last week 4 astronauts went to ISS on his rocket and the first stage landed, again. Tesla is still growing at close to 40/50% top and bottomline when all car companies are contracting, even FAANG.

Twitter is yet to be seen. But its quite incredible the dismissiveness around here. Making Twitter work is peanuts comparing to trying to get a car company and a space company (both industries where successful examples are much harder to find than social media companies. Even if we point fingers as Meta and Snap, they are profitable and not bankrupt like most car and space companies in history) to survive through the 2008 Financial crisis.

biscottigelato··on No Way to Grow Up
They are called children for a reason. It's adult's responsibility to look out for them because they are not grown up enough to fend for themselves.

We adults have been failing them miserably and we should be ashamed of ourselves.

The audacity to tell them that they should bargain with us for their future. Unbelievable.

biscottigelato··on No Way to Grow Up
Anyone that is in a situation that is trying to establish new relationships with people and understand each other emotions during so in as contentious a situation as figuring a new person out would have found a mask hugely inhibiting.

Grown-up that have never change their social circles for year will not be able to empathize. Nomads definitely do and understand what kids have to go through as they are trying to navigate the world and understand other human being from scratch.

"The problem isn’t the kids getting sick, it’s the adults teaching them getting sick and dying"

Isn't this exactly what the article is talking about? I think recognizing that we are doing this trade is a step in the right direction. Only then can we proceed to discuss how we should make that trade, instead of throwing kids whom have no say, and their future, right under the bus.

It's already widely recognized that death toll figure is died 'with' COVID, not died 'from' COVID, which is okay as a number in itself. However direct comparison using such figure is disingenuous.
biscottigelato··on Ask HN: Meta Question Does FAANG Become Maang or Manga?
I have no idea why FAANG is still a thing. Of the trillion dollars companies, Meta/FB is no longer one of them. Netflix no idea how they even got part of the league.

Should be ATAMA - Apple, Tesla, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet.

But really, it will be BTS - Bitcoin, Tesla and SpaceX. The $10T club.
