bionsystem··on The Illumos Cafe: Another Cozy Corner for OS Diversity
We are, and SmartOS was meant to break that trend !
bionsystem··on The Illumos Cafe: Another Cozy Corner for OS Diversity
> For now, it is very simple: there is a VM (running on FreeBSD and bhyve, on hardware I manage) where I have installed SmartOS. The physical host also runs the reverse proxy (in a jail). Inside the SmartOS VM, there are a series of zones: [...]

That is a weird take, to install SmartOS inside a VM for anything else than a PoC. SmartOS is meant to run on bare metal and host its own VMs / zones. It works either way of course but it's funny for an "Illumos cafe" to not go full on Illumos on the setup.

bionsystem··on Dropbox announces new gen server hardware for higher efficiency and scalability
Sorry, "tons of" was an overstatement, but still they've been losing customers overall (and revenue, although they manage to grow earnings through price increases).
bionsystem··on Dropbox announces new gen server hardware for higher efficiency and scalability
Their quarterly reports.
bionsystem··on Dropbox announces new gen server hardware for higher efficiency and scalability
They are losing tons of customers each quarter.
bionsystem··on I want everything local – Building my offline AI workspace
I'm a desktop guy, considering the switch to a laptop-only setup, what would I miss ?
bionsystem··on Ask HN: What trick of the trade took you too long to learn?
I agree, we hear too much about how to save and not enough about how to spend properly.
bionsystem··on Ask HN: What trick of the trade took you too long to learn?
I do bowling now and read your post as if you did as well :) Completely pointless and quite fun too.
bionsystem··on Ask HN: What trick of the trade took you too long to learn?
One life trick I learned way too late is that you're allowed to have fun, on your trade or on the side. One should enjoy a few light-hearted or relaxed moments every week. For some reason I was convinced that one should seek productivity at every moment, which is the fastest way to burn out.
bionsystem··on Palantir gets $10B contract from U.S. Army
10B is a drop in the water considering current PLTR valuation, I really wonder how that is sustainable.
bionsystem··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
"Usenet" has a wikipedia page which describes the network quite well. I used it in the late 2000s, not just for discussion as some groups were also hosting warez. Pretty sure you can still go there although it's unclear you'll get the post quality of the 80s-90s (back when I read discussions it was already a lot of trolling).
bionsystem··on I'm a 16-Year-Old Self-Taught Developer – Built 700 Projects
Very impressive. What is your idea generation process, if you have any, to find so many ideas ?
bionsystem··on Series C and scale
Whether it's this or call centers, at the end of the day...
bionsystem··on Barrelfish OS Architecture Overview (2013) [pdf]
So far when Jim starts something it's a massive success, can't wait to see how this one goes.
bionsystem··on Ask HN: What do you spend your money on?
Roughly 25% living expenses, 25% weekends and activities with my girlfriend (or provisions for future fun and activities), 25% provisions for a future downpayment and the rest in personal savings for retirement. That may be +/- 5-10% on each depending on what's going on in a particular month.
bionsystem··on Show HN: I wrote a modern Command Line Handbook
grep, sed, awk and regular expressions would probably be part of my 1st hour course if I were to produce one. And by awk I mean the super basic stuff like -F',' '{print $3" "$NF}' is already a long way

also any command | while read line; do something $line; done

and find and vi of course

bionsystem··on Show HN: Samchika – A Java Library for Fast, Multithreaded File Processing
If you open() read-only I don't think it blocks (some other process writing to it might block though).
bionsystem··on How the Sun Enterprise 10000 was born (2007)
I can't wait for the mandatory "brendan gregg screams at disks" youtube link.
bionsystem··on A server that wasn't meant to exist
Charity and non-profit look to me like the easiest way to finance corruption with tax evasion, while making yourself (esp. if you're a billionaire) look good.
bionsystem··on Googler... ex-Googler
Watched this movie 3 times and never noticed! This is a fun touch.
bionsystem··on Build an 8-bit computer from scratch
As a side note, reading "But How Do It Know" for a total beginner like me can help to scratch the itch of understanding the basics. I really loved the book and will buy my 3rd copy (lost one and gave away another).
bionsystem··on Evolving Scala
> Huge Kudos to Daniel for his courses. If you think Scala is difficult, check his course, these will change your mind.

Daniel Ciocirlan I guess ?

bionsystem··on Build a Container Image from Scratch
What is the advantage of nspawn vs lxc ? I use lxc extensively at the moment to test ansible recipes and it works pretty well even though I'm constrained on an old version.
bionsystem··on xlskubectl – a spreadsheet to control your Kubernetes cluster
Yes and give a well deserved bonus to those finance guys.
bionsystem··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
Self-hosted notion replacement would be amazing, I hope you succeed !
bionsystem··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
That sounds interesting, I might give it a try. Do you plan to allow plugins for domain-specific development ?
bionsystem··on Can you lose your native tongue? (2024)
I once met a guy who did. He was in his 70s born in soviet Russia, emigrated as a kid in western Germany at 5 or 6, and was re-learning Russian at 70+ because he forgot all about it.
bionsystem··on The first release of OpenVox, the OSS implementation of Puppet
Both are solid and will do the job.

Ansible is a little bit easier to get started for a few reason (yaml instead of a DSL, ssh only...) ; it's also mostly tasks running through SSH which may feel a bit more "natural" when you are configuring machines initially.

In terms of idempotency I find it is easier in ansible to mess up something but if you are careful they are on par. I've used mostly ansible over the past few years in various jobs but the first I got in touch with ~10 years ago was puppet and it felt very solid especially for heterogeneous environments (we had different archs and OSes to manage). Also puppet scales very well because it has agents as well as many tools to manage large infrastructures which I tried and were already quite convenient 10 years ago.

TL;DR probably use ansible unless you have a very specific use case.

bionsystem··on So you want to write Java in Neovim
Not the op but I like it too and here is why :

- I like awk grep sed find and many more... and piping things together

- I like the low latency of vim and love walking through code with just a few movers

- I like the ubiquity of using the same tools on any machine, local or remote (including windows now that it has wsl) and bash

All of this even more so than "no mouse setup" or anything, I don't mind using the mouse sometimes.

bionsystem··on So you want to write Java in Neovim
> why programmers keep launching flaming turds into production despite all the increasingly fancy tools is a somewhat entertaining question

haha I love the tone and I feel you, the state of software (and computing in general) keeps surprising me (in a bad way) as years go by. It feels like it's only getting worse. We can talk about their salaries too !
