For instance, with Google's music service. Once you upload a few albums Google shows albums you might like. This isn't done because I have my real name (I don't use it, personally, but have seen it in action) posted.
Same kind of thing goes with ads. They can track your IP(s) and go with that. If anything, it's a better system than using so called "real names" because people, I will bet, will use fake names.
The same type of system can be used with nick names. It's just tied to the user's profile.
Maybe I'm just getting it all wrong and not thinking right, but it really doesn't sit well with me.
"People will be held accountable now!" is the slogan I keep hearing ringing in my head listening to the excuses put out by companies.
In the end, it is their service people are using and they can dictate the terms all they want. However, it also sets up a system where people will now expect websites across the web to want their true names.
In a sense, it will become common place and make people look weird for using nick names. At least, that's my opinion.
Fuck them for doing that.
It has given the United States an excuse to do that they are doing to its people.
The whole system is based upon fear, which is exactly what the so called "terrorists" wanted to do.
The government(s) of this world don't particularly enjoy the thought of its population having to ability to think for themselves. How can they (temporarily) suspend this? Fear.
They wrote on that post that they do indeed want to support other distro's in the future. I suspect they just want to get some stability before committing to a wide range of distro's. Ubuntu is very popular, so it makes sense.
Distro's can take the .deb files and extract them through their package managers to fit their systems, probably without much hassle.
I don't think hope is enough, actually. The Freedom Box needs volunteers desperately. Everything from code to user interface to ideas.
So I suppose my hope is: I really, really hope more people get involved.
After all, it is we the people who ultimately are creating the thing.
Edit: Never mind, I found it under contribute on their site...
I understand Python could be a good choice and, yes, I agree it would be "easier". But jeez you know.. I just want to use C damn it. I want complete control over the memory. WHY CAN'T I JUST USE C?!! haha
edit: It's not that I don't like Python. I think it's a great scripting language. But for me, it's just too slow. Speed is important to me.
I thought about doing a clone of it and making it open source under the GPL but I'm still not quite as productive as I can be in C yet.
